    Notizen: Spores of Bacillus subtilis stored under different concentrations of clove infusion were microscopically observed to undergo germination. These spores, however, did not outgrow when subcultured on nutrient agar. Spores which remained refractile during storage in clove infusion at 37°C outgrew when transferred to nutrient agar. Clove ash was determined to contain substances which allowed complete germination or darkening of spores in distilled water. Eugenol, an essential oil found in cloves was determined to be sporostatic at concentrations of 0.05 - 0.06% (v/v). Several closely related compounds; isoeugenol, gingerol and zingerone also showed sporostatsis at levels of 0.05 - 0.6, 0.90 - 1.00, and 0.80 - 0.90% (v/v) respectively.

    Beschreibung / Inhaltsverzeichnis: Résumé Le pancréas exocrine de la souris jeune obèsehyperglycémique de Bar Harbor et celui de la souris obèse Néo-Zélandaise adulte sont comparés à ceux de souris non-obèses témoins en dosant les activités potentielles de la lipase, de l'amylase, du chymotrypsinogène, du trypsinogène et de la ribonucléase dans la glande ainsi que les activités correspondant aux 4 premières protéines dans l'intestin grêle. Il résulte des dosages que ces paramètres du pancréas exocrine sont normaux dans les deux obésités congénitales considérées.
    Kurzfassung: Zusammenfassung Die Funktion des exokrinen Pankreas wurde bei jungen fettsüchtig-hyperglykämischen Bar-Harbor-Mäusen und bei erwachsenen fettsüchtigen Neuseeland-Mäusen sowie bei nicht-fettsüchtigen Kontrolltieren verglichen. Die potentiellen Aktivitäten von Lipase, Amylase, Chymotrypsinogen, Trypsinogen und Ribonuclease wurden in der Drüse bestimmt, ferner die Aktivitäten der 4 erstgenannten Eiweißkörper im Dünndarm. Aus den Resultaten geht hervor, daß die Funktion des exokrinen Pankreas bei den beiden untersuchten Fettsuchtstypen durch normale Enzymaktivitäten charakterisiert ist.
    Notizen: Summary The exocrine pancreas of young obese-hyperglycaemic mice from Bar Harbor and of adult New Zealand obese mice were compared with controls from non-obese animals. The potential activities of lipase, amylase, chymotrypsinogen, trypsinogen and ribonuclease were determined in the gland, as well as the activities corresponding to the first four proteins in the small intestine. These assays indicate that in the two congenital obesities considered, the exocrine function of the pancreas is characterized by normal enzymatic levels.

    Notizen: Abstract The biology of the rotifer Brachionus plicatilis has been studied extensively in recent years, due to its importance in aquaculture. Today, the culture of several marine fish species relies completely on the daily production of live rotifers. In the present paper we explore the conditions that facilitate maintaining live rotifers for extensive periods at low temperatures. In addition to its possible contribution in providing reserve stocks for commercial application, these studies may be of ecological importance. They could explain some of the physiological adaptive mechanisms that are involved in the survival of rotifers under adverse environmental conditions. Experimental results showed relatively high survival rates (82–85%) in rotifers that were cultured at 25 °C and exposed later to -1 °C for 12–14 days. During this period, rotifers were kept without food and their media were not changed. The survival was found to depend on the rotifer culture conditions, prior to exposure to -1 °C. These included the type of food fed to rotifers (yeast or algae), the salinity in which they were cultured, and an essential acclimation period of 2–6 day at 4 °C or 10 °C. The acclimation period was associated with the synthesis of at least one specific protein and accumulation of lipids. Profiles of protein synthesis in rotifers incubated at 10 °C revealed a 94 kD protein, which did not appear in rotifers cultured at 25 or 37 °C. Immunoisolation, using a polyclonal antibody that was prepared against HSP60, revealed that this protein was synthesized in rotifers kept at 10, 25 or 37 °C. However, this antibody did not react with the 94 kD peptide.In addition, rotifers kept at 10 °C accumulated substantial amounts of lipids, including eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA), which is found in the algae fed to them. These results support the hypothesis of specific adaptations to survival at low temperatures during an acclimation period.

    Notizen: o-Benzenediazonium carboxylates couple with methylene-active compounds to yield hydrazo derivatives with high purity. The 1H and 13C NMR data of eleven such products are presented and analysed. The predominance of the hydrazo over the azo form is consistent with accepted criteria. Furthermore, evidence for the preference of the carbethoxy group over the acetyl group for intramolecular hydrogen bonding is suggested.
