Notes:
Summary A study has been made about the behaviour of membrane potentials and ionic contents of mm. sartorii from rana esculenta unter the influence of metabolic alterations in normal and acid solutions. 1. Under metabolic inhibitors (pH 7.0–7.4) the membrane potential is decreased to about −30 till −20 mV. 2. This depolarization is accompanied by a strong loss of potassium and an accumulation of sodium and water. 3. In an acid medium (pH 3,0–5.0) with metabolic inhibitors the membrane potential is reversed to about +20 till +40 mV, and alkali equivalents in the muscle are diminished. The water accumulation does not take place. 4. From −20 to positive values the membrane potential is not influenced by metabolic inhibitors and can not be explained as a potassium or sodium diffusion potential. During replarisation from positive potentials in solutions with normal pH this potential range is more quickly passed than the further turn to more negative potentials depending on metabolism. The results are discussed with respect to the literature.
