    Notes: Abstract. There is increasing concern over the environmental impact of freshwater cage culture, but there is a lack of information on the amounts and nature of the wastes produced. This study presents measurements of the total solid waste arid solid carbon, nitrogen and phosphorus loadings from five Scottish rainbow trout, Salmo gairdneri Richardson, cage farms, and shows a significant input of solids below the cages. The results indicate a considerable variability in solid output which was partly due to variations in the feeding rate of fish with the cages, but was also thought to be due to variations in management on individual farms. The results compare well with other studies on land-based pond and tank systems and provide useful estimates of solid waste loadings for the prediction of environmental impact.

    Notes: In this report we have employed an alternative tissue-sectioning procedure which provides a plan view of intra-epithelial cell populations within the airway wall. Immunoperoxidase staining of such sections for class II MHC (Ia) antigen revealed the presence of a highly developed intra-epithelial network of Ia-positive dendritic cells, which was not evident employing conventional cross- or longitudinal tissue sections. This finding has important implications for the study of mechanisms underlying allergic and infectious diseases of the respiratory tract.

    Notes: The effect of exercise on isoprenaline-induced cyclic adenosine monophosphate (cAMP) production was studied in peripheral-blood lymphocytes obtained from ten patients with atopic asthma, seven subjects who were atopic but did not have asthma and eight non-atopic, non-asthmatic control subjects. The asthma in the atopic subjects was mild only requiring intermittent treatment with inhaled β adrenoceptor agonists, none of which were taken in the 48 hr prior to the study. Exercise consisted of a standardized 6-min run on a treadmill sufficient to raise the subject's pulse rate to 〉 160 bpm and respiratory function was measured before and at 5,10,15,20,30 and 60 min after the test. Blood samples were taken 5 min before and at 10 and 60 min after exercise, lymphocytes were separated by density gradient centrifugation and cAMP measured by a competitive radioimmunoassay. Exercise led to a significant decrease (27%) in the forced expiratory volume in I sec (FEV1) in the ten atopic asthmatic subjects but no change (〈 3%) in the non-atopic and atopic non-asthmatics. There was no significant difference in the unstimulated cAMP levels before exercise in the three groups, but stimulation with isoprenaline caused a significantly greater rise in cAMP in the non-atopic, non-asthmatic subjects when compared to both the atopic asthmatics and the atopic subjects without asthma. Exercise led to a significant elevation of cAMP in all three groups of subjects, but the same differences between the groups remained. These results suggest that there are differences in lymphocyte β receptor function not between patients who are asthmatic or non-asthmatic but between individuals who are atopic as opposed to non-atopic.

    Notes: Abstract. Underwater television was used to observe the distribution and swimming behaviour of groups of farmed rainbow trout, Salmo gairdneri Richardson, in marine net cages. Undisturbed rainbow trout (mean total length 240 mm) aggregated near the surface, remaining motionless in slack water and formed polarized shoals at higher current velocities. Larger fish (mean total length 317 mm) occupied deeper parts of the cage and were more active during periods of slack water. The results are compared with previous work on farmed Atlantic salmon, Salmo salar L., and discussed in relation to the biology of wild rainbow trout and recent work on exercise, growth and condition in salmonids.

    Notes: Resource use efficiency in Asian carp farming systems is analysed based on a survey of 2493 farms of nine countries. Multivariate classification of farms by intensity and diversity identified six farm types: four types of specialized aquaculture farms at different levels of intensity, and two types of integrated agriculture–aquaculture systems. Pond-based, specialized semi-extensive systems (using mainly inorganic fertilizers and feeds of off-farm origin), and integrated semi-intensive systems (using feeds and fertilizer of both on and off-farm origin) are by far the most common types, accounting for 59% and 27% of all farms respectively. Specialized semi-extensive systems also show the highest protein and nutrient (N and P) use efficiencies, and among the highest labour use efficiency. Super-intensive cage farms are less efficient in nutrient and labour use, but provide very high returns to land and capital investment. On average, the aquaculture components of integrated agriculture– aquaculture systems are less nutrient, land, and labour efficient than specialized semi-extensive systems. Integrated semi-extensive systems (using organic fertilizers of on-farm origin) are particularly inefficient across all indicators. Hence in practice, gains in overall resource use efficiency through on-farm integration with agricultural production are constrained by the relative inefficiency of the aquaculture subsystems on integrated farms. Although such systems can likely be improved, integration as such is not a panacea to increasing resource use efficiency. Wide variation in resource use efficiency within all systems indicates potential for substantial efficiency gains through improved management regardless of the fundamental choice of system.

    Notes: In recent years, mangroves have been seriously threatened by shrimp culture development in the Mekong delta of Vietnam. As one way of protecting the mangroves, efforts have been made to develop shrimp-mangrove integrated farming systems through State Forestry Fisheries Enterprises (SFFEs), involving a participatory approach. The present study investigated the shrimp-mangrove farming systems in Ngoc Hien district at the southern tip of the Mekong delta through a detailed farm-level survey, including technical, environmental, social and economic factors. A total of 161 shrimp-mangrove farms on the east and west coasts of Ngoc Hien district were surveyed. The results showed that on the East coast of the delta, the pH of the bottom soil, the water alkalinity, gate width ratio (ratio of gate width to pond area), pond age and mangrove density, and flooding level of ‘flat’ (flat is where the mangroves are planted) in the dry and rainy seasons were significantly correlated with shrimp pond yields. On the west coast, the pH of the bottom soil, dissolved inorganic phosphorus, ditch area, and flooding level of ‘flat’ were found to be significantly correlated with shrimp pond yields. An economic analysis, based solely on the economic returns from shrimp culture showed that the farming systems with a mangrove coverage of 30-50% of the pond area gave the highest annual economic returns. The results demonstrate a better economic return to farmers who maintain mangroves in their farming systems.

    Notes: The present paper explores the relationships between aquaculture and the environment In Asia, focusing on the demands for environmental goods and services among different sectors. Aquaculture in the region accounts for 88% of global production by weight and 80% by value. Nevertheless, environmental problems are increasingly apparent and the higher the demands for environmental goods and services, the more negative the impacts. Against a background of rapid social, economic and political change, the paper considers how the sustainability of the industry is best assured. An integrated view of resource use, in which aquaculture is but one activity, is necessary for sustainable development. The roles of planning, education, research and environmental management schemes are discussed.

    Notes: The expansion of freshwater cage culture in Scotland during the 1980s led to concern with respect to the impact of nutrient, particularly phosphorus (P), discharges on water quality in lakes. The primary route by which P enters the aquatic environment from cage farms is through the feed administered to the fish. In recent years, there have been considerable technological advances in feed manufacturing and improved feeding practices at farm level. This paper investigates how P inputs to freshwater lakes from cage farms may be reduced through changes in diets and improved food conversion ratios. The results demonstrate that there has been a significant improvement in the P content of freshwater trout diets in recent years and that it is possible to reduce waste P loadings from cage sites through the use of better-quality diets and improved feed management. In Scotland, production levels in freshwater cages are commonly set by the regulatory authority assuming a soluble waste P loading of 10 kg P tonne−1 of fish produced. This study suggests that actual soluble waste P loadings are likely to be far lower than this and that, as a result, increases in water column total P levels may be overestimated.
