Notizen: A generalized vaporization model is developed which describes the evaporation of a spherical liquid droplet irradiated by a high-intensity, pulsed laser beam. Diffusive and convective transport processes are included in the hydrodynamic description of a two-component system composed of droplet vapor and ambient gas. Numerical solutions to the two-component hydrodynamic equations are obtained which illustrate the ability of the model to describe both isobaric vaporization, and convective vaporization with the production of shock waves.

Notizen: A cylindrical electrode electrostatic analyzer has been designed for surface structure measurements which has sufficient sensitivity that shadowing/blocking data can be obtained without significantly damaging the surface structure. A modification to the standard π/(square root of)2 design compensates for that part of the spread in the ion energies due to elastic scattering kinematics. The analyzer is small enough to fit inside a standard 25 cm diameter UHV chamber on a turntable, allowing angular distribution measurements over a wide range of scattering angles. An example of a shadowing/blocking angular scan of a clean Si(100) surface is shown. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

Notizen: A study of the spatially resolved water-occupied pore size distribution in a drying concrete cylinder is reported. Pore sizes are obtained from freezing point depression of pore water for a temperature range of 0 to −40 °C, assuming that the freezing point is inversely proportional to pore diameter. Single-point magnetic resonance imaging techniques were used to monitor unfrozen water content as functions of position and temperature. It was observed that freezing began at −10 °C in the cylinder center, which had the highest moisture content, and with a further temperature decrease, the freezing region gradually spread to the exposed end surfaces. The central region had a broad water-occupied pore size distribution, with pore diameters as large as 10 nm. The occupied pore sizes became progressively smaller as the moisture content decreased in proximity to the exposed surfaces. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

Notizen: The blast wave theory coupled with ionization described by the Saha equations and the charge conservation equation, are used to calculate the time-dependent, spatial distribution of the number densities of the different species of a plasma formed on a carbon surface. The temporal behavior of the normalized intensity profiles of the C i (247.8 nm) and C ii (251.1 nm) lines and the Stark shifts of the C i (247.8 nm) line from 0.1 to 0.4 μs are obtained. Good agreement is found between theoretical and experimental time-dependent, normalized, line intensity profiles and Stark shift profiles.

Notizen: The dislocation pile-up avalanche model is used to explain the crystal size dependence for hot spot-controlled initiation of chemical decomposition in cyclotrimethylenetrinitramine crystals subjected to drop-weight impact testing. Deformation-induced temperature rises, hot spot sizes, and lifetimes are related to previously reported values for direct thermal decomposition. A reasonable chemical reaction yield is estimated from available kinetic data.

Notizen: Gas-gun reverse-ballistic experiments have been performed in which Ti6Al4V alloy disks were impacted onto smaller diameter, hardened steel rods to push out shear plugs from the disk material. The range of disk velocities was 219–456 m/s. For each experiment, the disk, plug, and rod were soft recovered after impact. Below 290 m/s, the plugs were pushed only partway through the disks, but localized shear bands outlining the plug shapes were easily recognized in metallographic sections. Optical and scanning electron microscopies were used to determine shear zone widths and to describe microstructural details associated with the primary shear zones. There is evidence for appreciable adiabatic heating and consequent thermal softening and melting of material in the main shear zone. A simple model is used to relate the observed plug displacements to the impact velocities and to provide estimates of several features: the shear zone strength, the threshold energy for shear plug displacement, and the threshold energy for shear plug separation. Clear evidence is presented of molten material having been produced as part of the plug separation process.

Notizen: Time-dependent intensities of the spectral lines emitted by laser-induced plasmas generated in several gases are presented. The time-resolved and spatially varying intensities of two once-ionized nitrogen lines were used to calculate radial temperature distribution of temperature within the plasma. A modified blast wave theory, in which ionization was included through the Saha equation and the equation of conservation of charge, was used to calculate time-dependent intensities of several spectral lines of C, N, He, and Ar. The temporal profiles of the spectral lines appear to be dependent on the ionization potentials of the species in the plasma.

Notizen: Spectrally resolved infrared fluorescence near 10 μm from vibrationally excited O3(ν3) has been observed in a cryogenic reactor facility at low pressure. The excited O3(v) is formed principally by three-body recombination of O and O2 in flowing, microwave-discharged O2/Ar mixtures at 1 Torr and 80 K. The spectral resolution is sufficient to permit identification and assignment of band centers for up to five quanta of stretching excitation. The observed transition frequencies are consistent with those predicted from a Darling–Dennison perturbation treatment. The spectra, which sample the recombination/deactivation sequence in its early to middle stages, indicate surprisingly little intermode coupling, being predominantly ν3 in character. There is also evidence of O3(v) excitation by near-resonant V–V coupling between O3 and O2(v=2). The spectroscopic analysis of the data is described, and considerations for scaling the spontaneous transition probabilities with vibrational level are discussed.

Notizen: Spectrally resolved infrared chemiluminescence from vibrationally excited ozone, O3(v), has been used to study the reaction kinetics of O3(v) in discharged O2/Ar mixtures at ∼1 Torr and 80–150 K. Dependences of the excited state number densities on temperature and O2 mole fraction indicate O3(v) is formed primarily by three-body recombination of O with O2 and is destroyed by rapid chemical reaction with O. Several secondary excitation reactions involving vibrationally and electronically excited O2 are also indicated. The data are treated with a detailed steady-state analysis of the discharge kinetics, to extract estimates for rate coefficients of the key elementary reactions. The effective "quasinascent'' state distribution in recombination is also inferred; this distribution shows selective recombination into the asymmetric stretching mode, but an apparently statistical (i.e., collisionally scrambled) behavior among the vibrational states within that mode. The results are discussed in terms of the detailed dynamics of three-body recombination.
