Notizen: The Rayleigh–Taylor (RT) instability of planar shells accelerated by direct heating of an underlying absorber layer is analyzed. A specific feature of the problem considered is a fixed in space energy deposition region, which allows the unstable transition layer to develop only gradually as the heated matter is pushed out of the deposition region. The linear growth spectrum ω(k) is investigated by relating a simple analytic estimate for a stationary exponential transition layer with the results of two-dimensional hydrodynamic simulations. For the unperturbed motion, an analytic solution is used which describes a uniform acceleration of the payload driven by a time-dependent uniform heating of the absorber with a fixed spatial extension. It is shown that an enhancement factor of 1.5(h/d), where h is the effective half-thickness of the heated region and d is the in-flight thickness of the payload, can be achieved for the distance-moved-over-thickness ratio as compared to the classical RT case of a strong density jump. © 2002 American Institute of Physics.

Notizen: Intense beams of heavy ions, envisaged for the near future at the Institute for Theoretical and Experimental Physics (Moscow) and Gesellschaft für Schwerionenforschung (Darmstadt), will be well suited for conducting implosion experiments in cylindrical geometry. In such implosions, the initial pressure generated by the direct beam heating can be enhanced by more than a factor of 10. If, in addition, an external magnetic field is introduced, the effect of magnetothermal insulation may allow to reach kilovolt temperatures and significant thermonuclear neutron yields in magnetized implosions driven by the beam heating intensities as low as ε(overdot)(similar, equals)1 TW/g. It is shown how the combined effect of the electrical resistivity and thermal conductivity sets a lower limit on the product UR (R is the radius, and U is the velocity of an imploding plasma volume) as a necessary condition for the regime of self-sustained magnetized implosion (SSMI). The optimal plasma parameters required for initiation of this regime are evaluated. In cylindrical geometry, the threshold for the SSMI regime is determined by the total driver energy deposition per unit areal density of the cylinder, ρ−1|dEb/dz| (kJ cm2/g). The results of one-dimensional magnetohydrodynamic simulations indicate that the advantages of magnetized implosions begin to manifest themselves at a beam energy level of Eb(approximate)100 kJ. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

Notizen: A model is proposed for calculating the efficiency of conversion of the energy of charged-particle beams into thermal radiation. The model is based on a simplified system of radiation hydrodynamics equations and applies to optically thick converters with high conversion efficiencies ηc≥0.5. In the case of planar geometry, a self-similar solution of the model equations is obtained. This solution is used to derive a scaling law for the beam parameters required for efficient performance of planar radiative converters. A comparison of converter materials with different Z reveals that preference should be given to low-Z elements.

Notizen: Abstract The structure of the stellar atmosphere irradiated by an X-ray source is calculated. On the basis of these numerical calculations an approximate theory of the X-ray reprocessing is formulated. The interaction of X-rays with the stellar atmosphere induces a considerable stellar wind. However, the main part of the X-ray energy is reemitted. The optical appearances of the close binary system including an X-ray source are discussed. The light curve of such a system is obtained. The mass-loss rate of a star with the size close to that of its Roche lobe is evaluated in the isothermal approximation. Most likely, the accretion of matter on to a neutron star, or a black hole, is the cause of the X-ray luminosity. The accreting matter is supplied with the mass outflow from the normal component induced by X-rays. The X-ray luminosity is shown to have an upper limit stipulated by the outflow saturation. The model of HZ Her=Her X1 system is constructed which accounts for the observed light curve. The optical appearances of the system are due to the X-ray heating of the face of the X-ray source area of the normal star. The radiation of this hot area is partly reflected by the surface of the disc around the X-ray source. The thin disc is formed by the accretion of matter by the X-ray source. The effective reflection of hard X-rays (hv∼15–30 keV) by the stellar surface is considered. This phenomenon makes it possible to detect those X-ray pulsars whose beam does not intercept the Earth. The model of Sco X1 as a black hole in a close binary system is discussed.
