Notizen: Barium hexaferrite (BaM) thin films were deposited on (0001) LiTaO3 substrates by pulsed laser deposition. Effects of the substrate temperature and oxygen gas pressure on the formation and quality of these films were studied. Films deposited at a substrate temperature of 800 °C and an oxygen pressure around 0.23 mbar showed the best c axis normal to the film plane with locked in-plane orientation. The saturation magnetization Ms and anisotropy field Ha measured by vibrating sample magnetometer were almost the same as those reported on bulk barium ferrite. Decreasing oxygen pressure hinders the formation of the Ba layer in BaM magnetoplumbite structure and gives rise to the spinel phase, which greatly decreases coercivity Hc of the films and finally destroys the whole BaM structure. Effects of the lattice mismatch and substrate-induced strains on the film structure were also studied. It was found that barium ferrite thin films grown on LiTaO3 substrates tend to choose a matching mode with compressional strains rather than shear strains. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.

Notizen: We describe a new simple, compact refractometer for air refractive index measurements. It consists of a double plane–plane Fabry Perot interferometer. Both interferometers consisting of Zerodur spacers of thickness of 1 and 100 mm are illuminated independently by the same single mode laser diode. The shorter cavity allows unambiguous identification of the transmission peak of the longer one to which the laser frequency is servo-locked. The refractive index of air is obtained via a heterodyne comparison with a second laser locked to a hyperfine component of the rubidium D2 line. We obtain a resolution of order 10−10 and accuracy of a few times 10−8. The metrological characteristics of the interferometer in vacuum are presented. Initial results for refractive index measurements agree with values calculated using the revised Edlen formulas. We also describe how this refractometer is used to measure variations of the density of air and their correlation with changes of refractive index of air. The density of air is used to make buoyancy corrections when comparing mass standards of different volume. Our preliminary results indicate that the values of air density determined by refractometry agree with those calculated using the Comité International des Poids et Mesures formula, which is based on measurements of temperature, pressure, moisture content, and CO2 concentration. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.

Notizen: A new and very simple technique has been developed for fabricating two-dimensional periodic submicron structures with feature size down to about 300 A(ring). The etching mask is made by coating the material surface with a monolayer of closely packed uniform latex particles. We have performed capacitance measurements on GaAs/AlGaAs heterostructure samples with a quasi-zero-dimensional dot array of 3300, 3640, and 3940 A(ring) periodicities. A series of nearly equally spaced peaks in a curve of the derivative of capacitance with respect to gate voltage, which corresponds to the energy levels formed by the lateral electric confining potential, is observed.

Notizen: The horizontal viscous flow model with “infinite” areal extent can be used for almost any well flow problem whether two-dimensional or three-dimensional, steady or nonsteady, single aquifer or multiaquifer. This model can also be used in the field of soil mechanics for subsurface drainage problems. The design includes scale model analysis and the application of conformal mapping techniques in order to simulate an ideal aquifer. Construction, calibration, and test procedures for the model are described. The apparatus has proved to be both a valuable research tool and an excellent teaching aid.

Notizen: We briefly describe a heterodyne refractometer developed at the BIPM in collaboration with the BNM/INM conservatory. The heart of the refractometer, a double Fabry–Perot interferometer, is placed inside the balance case of a very sensitive 1 kg mass comparator, the FB2 balance. Comparisons between methods using refractometry and the NPL revised Edlén formulas, carried out for a period of nine months, yielded a difference in air index of refraction of 4×10−8 with a standard deviation of 1×10−8. The variation of air index of refraction was about 1.5×10−5 during the study. Precise determinations of the short-term and long-term stability of the Fabry–Perot cavity, made of Zerodur, were also achieved. For monitoring air density, results obtained with the refractometry method were compared with those deduced from two other methods: the CIPM formula for the density of moist air and the use of buoyancy artifacts. The response characteristics for the three determinations were comparable and the agreement among the air density determinations was within 1×10−5 kg m−3. © 2002 American Institute of Physics.

Notizen: Granular NiFe/Ag multilayer film exhibits low saturation field and large giant magnetoresistance (GMR) effect, suited as low-field sensor materials.1 However, observed Barkhausen noise in the GMR measurements in these films have been limiting their practical applications.2 Here, we report a micromagnetic modeling study, focusing on the correlation between the micromagnetic properties and film microstructure. It is found that the spatial randomness of intergranular exchange coupling, likely to occur in the film due to its granular microstructure, can cause Barkhausen jumps in GMR response. Figure 1 shows calculated GMR value of a patterned NiFe/Ag/NiFe trilayer with a size of 1.28 μm×1.11 μm, as a function of external fields, applied along its hard axis direction. The Barkhausen jumps can be clearly identified along the GMR response due to its μm size domain switching. In addition to the spatial nonuniformity, effects of various intergranular and interlayer Heisenberg and non-Heisenberg exchange couplings are systematically studied. Figure 2 shows the calculated GMR response for a patterned planar isotropic trilayer film with an interlayer biquadratic exchange coupling. The triangular shape of the GMR response is the characteristics of the biquadratic interlayer exchange coupling. © 1997 American Institute of Physics.

Notizen: Laminar vortex rings propagating horizontally in linearly stratified media were investigated in a water tank using the laser-induced fluorescence flow visualization technique. The vortex rings were observed to develop an asymmetry where the upper part of the ring became larger in the cross-sectional area than the lower part. The asymmetry was a result of the instability of the interface on the upper portion of the ring; the upper half of the vortex was heavier than its immediate surroundings, whereas the lower half was lighter. When the circulation-based internal Froude number was smaller than 1.3, the vortex rings retained their overall geometry and continually decreased in size by leaving significant amounts of dyed fluid behind in their wake. At Froude numbers greater than 3.2, the asymmetry was more pronounced, both in the relative position of the upper and lower cores as well as their sizes, and the overall vertical extent of the rings did not decrease until some time after the vortex formation. These observations led to a two-level classification of the collapse process. The collapse time and distance increased with Froude number at any Reynolds number. For a given Froude number and discharge time, increasing the Reynolds number delayed the vortex ring collapse. The normalized collapse time and distance for the lower Froude number vortex rings in the present study were found to scale with the composite parameter Re Fr2/3. © 1997 American Institute of Physics.

Notizen: slyD encodes a 196 amino acid polypeptide that is a member of the FKBP family of cis–trans peptidyl–prolyl isomerases (PPIases). slyD mutations affect plaque formation by the phage φX174 by blocking the action of the phage lysis protein E. Here we describe the selection of a set of spontaneous slyD mutations conferring resistance to the expression of gene E from a plasmid. These mutations occur disproportionately in residues of SlyD that, based on the structure of the prototype mammalian FKBP12, make ligand contacts with immunosuppressing drug molecules or are conserved in other FKBP proteins. A wide variation in the plating efficiency of φX174 on these E R strains is observed, relative to the parental, indicating that these alleles differ widely in residual SlyD activity. Moreover, it is found that slyD mutations cause significant growth rate defects in Escherichia coli B and C backgrounds. Finally, overexpression of slyD causes filamentation of the host. Thus, among the FKBP genes found in organisms across the evolutionary spectrum, slyD is unique in having three distinct drug-independent phenotypes.

Notizen: Blue gourami, Trichogaster trichopterus (Pallas), were intraperitoneally immunized with major adhesin, a 43 kDa OMP protein isolated from fish Aeromonas hydrophila, in the presence of Freund's complete adjuvant (FCA). Three weeks later, a booster injection of adhesin without FCA was administered. Control group fish were similarly treated with phosphate-buffered saline (PBS) and FCA. Results showed that anti-adhesin serum obtained from fish after booster immunization exhibited very strong ability in agglutinating bacterial cells. Although this antiserum had no bactericidal effect, it could significantly inhibit serologically different strains of A. hydrophila from invading EPC (Epithelioma papillosum of carp) cells in vitro. In addition, the proliferative response of head kidney leucocytes of these immune fish was significantly increased as compared to that of the control. The results also showed that the major adhesin could provide significant protective immunity to fish against the challenge by homologous and heterologous strains of A. hydrophila and one virulent strain of Vibrio anguillarum.
