    Notizen: Summary Three keratinophilic species of Gymnoascaceae obtained in culture and isolated from Spanish soils are described, i.e. Amauroascus kuehnii von Arx, Arachnotheca albicans (Apinis) von Arx and Gymnoascus reticulatus Zukal. All of them are new records from Spain.

    Notizen: Abstract Sediments from eight river mouths along the Catalonian coast (Spain) were surveyed for keratinolytic fungi and related Onygenales. The actidione plating technique was employed. Of 532 actidione-treated sediment samples, 268 (50.3%) were positive for the fungi. Altogether, 384 fungal strains from 35 species were isolated from the samples. Narasimhella marginospora, Aphanoascus fulvescens, Neoarachnotheca keratinophila with its anamorph Myriodontium keratinophilum, Narasimhella hyalinospora, Beauveria alba, Sporothrix schenckii, Chrysosporium lobatum and Gymnoascus littoralis were the predominant species in sediments. Abundance of N. marginospora was clearly correlated with the degree of water pollution with sewage.

Among the antimycotics testedin vitro, clotrimazole was found to be most active. Topical application of clotrimazole cream cured the lesions completely.

    Notizen: Summary Coriolopsis gallica was grown in static liquid cultures on an inert support consisting of fibre-glass impregnated with Indulin AT (pine kraft lignin). The fungus developed well in such conditions enabling the study with the SEM of the morphology and penetration of the fungus. The method also pemits the recovery of degraded lignin, the characteristics of which was monitored by direct analysis of its elementary composition, methoxyls groups, and by spectroscopic techniques and gel permeation. Degraded lignin differed from sound lignin by its higher percentages of oxygen, and lower percentages of C, H, and OCH3 was richer in oxygen. The IR and vis-UV spectra as well as the fractionation by gel filtration showed that the structure of the lignin incubated in the presence of the fungus had been modified.

    Notizen: Abstract Human cataractous lenses from patients of advanced age (101 & 85 year) were investigated by SEM. Various aspects of the cataract morphology could be observed. Even when the overall shape of the lens fibres had remained unchanged (although the typical ball and socket interconnections were barely visible) the homogeneous fibre content had changed into fibrillar and/or granular material, or the lens fribres had been (partly) hollowed out. Where there was shrinkage of the originally hexagonally-shaped lens fibres to a more or less rounded form with a wrinkled surface, the contents had changed into granular material with low density. Both granular and fibrillar material could account for a substantial increase in light scattering, resulting in a considerable decrease in vision through the lens.

    Notizen: Abstract Prolene, perlon, supramid and titanium, either used as sutures, ‘Strampelli’ sutures or artificial lens loops, were compared after remaining in the human eye for at least one year. For comparison, non-implanted samples of each of the materials were used as blanks. Prolene and Perlon in particular showed severe biodégradation after a given period; Supramid showed much less degradation of its surface. Titanium showed a rather rough outer surface (even in the non-implanted samples), particularly as bends in the lens loop, which facilitated the adherence of cells, fibres and microorganisms.

    Notizen: Abstract Intraocular implantation of an iris-bridge or lobster-claw lens was performed on a rabbit eye. The incisions were closed with stainless steel-vanadium sutures. Two months after implantation loosening at one side of the connection between lens and iris was noted, which resulted in long-term intermittent touch of the corneal endothelium. The reaction of the endothelium to the corneal sutures and the contact area of artificial lens and corneal endothelium were studied by SEM.

    Notizen: Abstract Processes of anamorph cell replication in Trimmatostroma abietis are described. Growth and conidiation are delimited on the basis of morphological, ultrastructural and ecological criteria. Cellular expansion shifts from bidirectional intercalary in exponential phase cells to isodiametric in late stationary phase cells, in the latter case with endogenous asexual reproduction. Ultrastructural similarities to dothideaceous black yeasts are discussed.

    Notizen: Abstract Sediments from 8 river mouths of the Catalonian coast (Spain) were examined for keratinolytic fungi. Out of 1250 river and marine samples examined, 499 (39.9%) were positive for these fungi. Aphanoascus fulvescens (anamorph + teleomorph), Chrysosporium keratinophilum, Ch. tropicum, Ch. an. of Arthroderma curreyi, Ch. pannicola, Ch. europae and Ch. indicum were the predominant species in the sediments. River samples were rich in keratinolytic fungi, whereas in marine beach sediments they occurred sporadically. The results of a preliminary experiment demonstrated that, marine water exerted a dramatical impact on river keratinolytic fungi causing their total or near-total elimination. The qualitative and quantitative compositions of river keratinolytic mycoflora depended on the degree of water contamination with sewage and on natural factors (mainly temperature). The keratinolytic mycoflora of two rivers was possibly altered dramatically by water contaminants, including poisons of industrial origin, and marine salinity. The problem of public health risk resulting from the distribution of keratinolytic fungi within the highly-frequented recreational waters is discussed.

    Notizen: Abstract The Catalonian river sediments were found to be rich in keratinolytic fungi. The keratinolytic fungal populations showed clear seasonal changes in the river sediments. The main factors ‘regulating’ these populations in such habitat were temperature, dissolved oxygen concentration, pH, ammonium, nitrates, total fungal number, BOD5, water poisons (cyanides, detergents, phenols), salinity and, presumably, strong insolation associated with low water levels. The last was probably of special importance in the deterioration of the fungal populations in the spring/summer season. A toxic effect on keratinolytic fungi in sediments was observed.Chrysosporium keratinophilum was found to be most resistant to industrial contaminants and salinity. Therefore, this species could be used as an indicator of water pollution.
