    Notizen: The erosion rates and impact damage of two sintered Si3N4 materials with identical compositions but different microstructures were determined using a gas-blast-type erosion rig. The erodent particles used were SiC grits and the impact angles investigated were 30° and 90°. It was found that the erosion behavior of the two materials could not be related to their mechanical properties, such as hardness and fracture toughness as predicted by the theoretical erosion models. In fact, a close relationship was identified between their microstructure and the erosion mechanism. Microstructures containing evenly dispersed and uniaxially oriented reinforcing whiskers promoted grain-pullout, while the randomly oriented elongated grains hindered it.

    Notizen: Si3N4/carbon fiber composites were fabricated using several types of fiber. All the composites had higher fracture toughness compared with monolithic Si3N4 ceramics. Tribological properties were investigated by a ball-on-disk method under unlubricated conditions. The composite containing fibers with a high orientation of graphite layers and high graphite content indicated a low friction coefficient. It was identified, by Raman spectroscopy, that graphite was transferred from the composite to the Si3N4 ball of the counterbody during the wear test. This transferred layer was effective for producing the low friction behavior of the composite.

    Notizen: Surface modification by ion implantation has been conducted to improve the tribological properties of a high-strength and high-fracture-toughness unidirectionally aligned silicon nitride (UA-SN). B+, N+, Si+, and Ti+ ions were implanted into the planes parallel and normal to the grain alignment of the UA-SN with a fluence of 2 × 1017 ions/cm2 at an energy of 200 keV. The ion implanted UA-SN showed a dramatic improvement in wear resistance. For example, the specific wear rate of the Si+-implanted specimen in the direction parallel to the grain alignment was reduced to a value of 3 × 10−10 mm2/N, equal to 1/20 of the unimplanted one. Cross-sectional transmission electron microscopy indicates the high wear resistance was attributed to the amorphous surface caused by the ion implantation.

    Notizen: Si3N4/carbon fiber composites have been produced with and without seeding by an extrusion and sintering process. In both cases the carbon fibers were aligned along the direction of extrusion, but the Si3N4 grains were only aligned in the seeded material. The mechanical properties of the specimens showed anisotropy with respect to the grain alignment, with both strength and toughness being highest in the direction parallel to the extruding direction. In this direction the seeded specimen, where both the Si3N4 grains and the carbon fibers were aligned, showed both higher fracture toughness and higher fracture strength than the nonseeded specimen where only the fibers were aligned.

    Notizen: To investigate the influence of crystal structure and solid solutions of certain elements in Si3N4 on aqueous tribological properties, seven specimens were fabricated. Solid solutions of aluminum and oxygen made the friction coefficient and wear increase in both α-type and β-type crystal structures. In particular, α-SiAlON, in which yttrium is also incorporated into the α-Si3N4 lattice, showed a higher friction coefficient and wear than other specimens containing the same concentration of Al or O.

    Notizen: The microscopic bridging stress distribution developed behind the crack tip of a highly anisotropic silicon nitride has been measured along the crack profile using Raman microprobe spectroscopy with a micrometer spatial resolution. The near-tip rising R-curve behavior and the crack-opening displacement (COD) profile of the material were also determined and discussed in comparison with the Raman microstress data. A comparison with the fracture behavior of a previously investigated silicon nitride material with a three-dimensional random microstructure is also proposed. According to this set of micro/macroscopic fracture characterizations, a self-consistent view of toughening behavior in silicon nitride ceramics is obtained, and the role on toughness of anisotropically oriented acicular grains clarified. In agreement with previous studies, it is confirmed that crack-face bridging is the most effective mechanism for toughening silicon nitride ceramics.

    Notizen: Si3N4 powders were sintered using a 28 GHz gyrotron source, with Y2O3, Al2O3, and MgO as sintering aids, in an attempt to investigate the effect of microwave radiation on densification behavior. The microwave-sintered samples were compared with identical samples produced by conventional pressureless sintering. The effect of sintering on the microstructural development and grain growth of the samples was assessed using scanning electron microscopy. Phase transformation behavior was assessed using X-ray diffractometry. In the microwave-sintered samples, densification and α→β transformation occurred at temperatures ∼200°C lower than those of the conventionally sintered samples. More importantly, at comparable stages of densification, the microstructures of the microwave-sintered and conventionally sintered samples were significantly different, with the microwave-sintered samples showing the development of elongated β grains at a much earlier stage of the α→β transformation. It was concluded that the effect of microwave radiation on sintering was not simply a decrease in sintering temperatures, but in possibly a different sintering mechanism, clearly related to localized heating within the grain-boundary phase.

    Notizen: Based on the processing strategy of improving the mechanical properties of liquid-phase-sintered materials by modifying the secondary phase chemistry, four rare-earth oxides (RE2O3, RE = La, Nd, Y, and Yb), in combination with alumina, were used as sintering aids for a submicrometer-size β-SiC powder. Doped with 5 vol% RE2O3+ Al2O3 additives, all specimens were hot-pressed to near full-densities at 1800°C, and they exhibited similar microstructures and grain size distributions. The SiC grains in all specimens revealed a core-rim structure after being plasma-etched, indicating that they were densified via the same solution-reprecipitation mechanism. It was found that a decrease in the cationic radius of the rare-earth oxides was accompanied by an increase in Young’s modulus, hardness, and flexural strength of the SiC ceramics, whereas the fracture toughness was improved by incorporating rare-earth oxides of larger cationic radius. The changes in the mechanical properties were attributed to the difference in the chemistry of the intergranular phases in the four ceramics.

    Notizen: Dense β-Si3N4 with various Y2O3/SiO2 additive ratios were fabricated by hot pressing and subsequent annealing. The thermal conductivity of the sintered bodies increased as the Y2O3/SiO2 ratio increased. The oxygen contents in the β-Si3N4 crystal lattice of these samples were determined using hot-gas extraction and electron spin resonance techniques. A good correlation between the lattice oxygen content and the thermal resistivity was observed. The relationship between the microstructure, grain-boundary phase, lattice oxygen content, and thermal conductivity of β-Si3N4 that was sintered at various Y2O3/SiO2 additive ratios has been clarified.

    Notizen: Rapid densification of a nanometer SiC powder doped with 2.04 wt% Al4C3 and 0.4 wt% B4C was conducted by using a nonconventional sintering technique called pulse electric current sintering (PECS). In all experiments, the sintering temperature and applied pressure were kept to be 1600oC and 47 MPa, respectively, while heating rates varied between 100oC/min and 400oC/min and the holding time was either 2 or 5 min. All of the specimens which were PECS-sintered under various conditions reached near-theoretical density. The microstructures of the rapidly densified SiC ceramics consisted of large elongated grains, and the grain size increased with the increase of heating rate. Polytype transformation of SiC occurred during the PECS process, where faster heating favored the formation of 6H polytype while slower heating favored 4H polytype.
