    Notizen: Abstract Novel poly(etheraroyl-co-terephthal)hydrazides with liquid crystalline (LC) behaviour, synthesized by solution polycondensation followed by non-solvent coagulation in water, have been characterized by means of Fourier Transform infrared (FT-i.r.), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and wide angle X-ray scattering (WAXS) techniques. DSC thermograms and WAXS intensity profiles of “as polymerized” and coagulated homo- and copolymers are strongly dependent upon the molecular structure and constitution of the polymers: the poly(etheraroyl-hydrazide) homopolymer shows an LC behaviour and such a characteristic is maintained in copolymers with low content of terephthaloyldichloride comonomer, while a further increase in comonomer content attenuates this LC attitude. Annealing treatments on “as polymerized” and coagulated copolymers are able to transform the LC phase “metastable at room temperature” into crystalline and/or amorphous phases.

    Notizen: Abstract New formulations of rubber toughening agents for difunctional and tetrafunctional commercial epoxies are attempted, on the basis of their increased thermal stability compared with classical unsaturated elastomers. Quite satisfactory results are obtained where a block copolymer of polydimethylsiloxane and polyoxyethylene elastomer or a functionalized poly (1 -butene) in difunctional epoxy are used. On the other hand, poor results are obtained when the same elastomers are employed in tetrafunctional epoxies. A tentative explanation is given on the basis of the different networks obtained in the two matrix systems.

    Beschreibung / Inhaltsverzeichnis: Polyhydrazid/Polyamid-Blends (PEHZ12/PA6) wurden durch Niedrigtemperatur-Polykondensation von 4,4′-Dichlorformyl-α,ω-diphenoxydodecan und Terephthaloyldihydrazid (TDH) zu Poly(etheraroylhydrazid) in Gegenwart von Polyamid 6 synthetisiert. Die DSC-Analysen lassen vermuten, daß die zwei Polymerkomponenten nicht wechselwirken. Bei der Extraktion des PA6-Anteils der Blends mit Ameisensäure zeigt die Charakterisierung des PEHZ12-Extraktionsrückstands aber, daß zumindest bei bestimmten Zusammensetzungen Wechselwirkungen zwischen den Komponenten auftreten. Modellreaktionen erlauben die Annahme, daß die PEHZ12-Polymerisation zwischen den Amino-Endgruppen des PA6 und den wachsenden PEHZ12-Polymerketten abläuft.
    Notizen: Poly(etheraroylhydrazide) is synthesized in the presence of PA6 by means of low-temperature condensation polymerization of 4,4′-dichloroformyl-α,ω-diphenoxydodecane with terephthaloyl dihydrazide (TDH) in order to prepare polyhydrazide/poly-amide 6 (PEHZ12/PA6) blends. The thermal analysis of the blends by DSC seems to indicate that the two polymers are not interacting. Nevertheless, when the blends are subjected to an extraction process with formic acid in order to remove the PA6, the characterization of the residual PEHZ12 reveales that some interactions do occur between the constituent polymers, at least for selected compositions. Model experiments permit to hypothesize that the polymerization of PEHZ12 proceeds with a chemical interaction between amino end groups of PA6 and growing PEHZ12 chains.

    Notizen: Novel polyamides from trans-4-octen-1,8-dioic acid (4-OD) and trans-2-trans-6-octadien-1,8-dioic acid (2,6-ODD) ad linear aliphatic diamines or piperazine were prepared in good yields by low-temperature polycondensation. The polymers obtained were investigated by infrared spectroscopy, x-ray diffraction, and differential scanning calorimetry. Polyamides from 4-OD show high molecular weights and crystallinities and Tm above 500°K, whereas those from 2,6-ODD are very weakly crystalline and decompose without melting in nitrogen at temperatures higher than 550°K. DSC studies revealed in the case of 4-OD polymers with odd diamines, a multiple peak phenomenon in the melting region, strongly dependent from the heating rate. Some hypotheses consistent with this behavior are briefly discussed, and it is concluded that the phenomenon arises from melt recrystallization occurring during the DSC scan.

    Notizen: Functionalization of an amorphous ethylene-propylene copolymer, EPM, has been performed by means of homogeneous grafting reactions of unsaturated molecules such as dibutylmaleate, diethylfumarate, itaconic anhydride, and maleic anhydride, initiated by free radicals. Dicumylperoxide and dibenzoylperoxide have been used as a free radical source and their efficiency has been compared. A different reactivity of the unsaturated molecules has been evidenced. The influence of the nature of the solvent on the functionalization degree has been investigated, revealing a noticeable effect of the solvent either on the amounts of grafted molecules or on the secondary reactions which lead to partial degradation of the functionalized EPM chains.

    Notizen: Polyamides from n-alkylmalonic acids and linear aliphatic diamines, with paraffinic side chains of 3-18 carbon atoms, were prepared by melt polycondensation or by low-temperature interfacial polycondensation and were characterized by infrared, differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), and x-ray diffraction techniques. First-order transitions were found in the range of 130-210°C, depending on the number of carbon atoms in the side chain. The x-ray diffraction indicated substantially amorphous systems for polyamides with 8-18 carbon atoms in the side chain. However, long-range order arises in these polymers from a solid-state structure in which polyamide and hydrocarbon layers having partially disordered chain conformations alternate.

    Notizen: A series of new aromatic polyetheraroylhydrazides incorporating 4-oxybenzoyl units has been synthesized, whose general formula was [CONHNHCO—O—O-(CH2)x—O—phenyl O-CONHNHCOO]n with x values in the range of 2 to 12. The increasing number of methylene units in the backbone gave rise to polymers which melted before the hydrazidic linkage underwent thermal cyclation to oxadiazole. Moreover, many polymers showed multiple endotherms on melting. X-ray diffraction studies confirmed a crystalline organization of polyhydrazides for methylene units above 4. © 1993 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.
