Notes: Abstract Objective To evaluate pressure control ventilation (PCV) delivered through a minit-racheotomy in treating severe flail chest trauma. Design Case report. Setting Intensive care unit of a trauma center. Patient A 34-year-old woman affected by flail chest trauma and acute respiratory failure, who was initially treated with tracheal intubation to obtain internal pneumatic stabilization. The patient failed extubation and noninvasive mask treatment (pressure support ventilation plus PEEP) due to poor chestwall mechanics. Interventions Minitracheotomy was performed and ventilation was achieved with high levels of inspiratory pressure (PCV or assisted PCV) to overcome the resistance of the cannula (Mini-Trach II, Portex, ID 4 mm). Esophageal and carinal pressures were monitored. Ventilatory treatment was always performed with the full cooperation of the patient; the patient's glottic function was always intact. Measurements and results The patient was successfully treated with pressure control ventilation delivered through the Mini-Trach. After 7 days of PCV, the patient was switched to assisted PCV. On the 20th day after admission, she was weaned from mechanical ventilation. Conclusions We conclude that a suitable gas exchange and pneumatic stabilization in a flail chest condition can be achieved using minitracheostomic ventilation. At the same time, this treatment could reduce some side effects of traditional tracheal intubation.

Notes: Summary Neutrophil granulocytes from 12 subjects with primary myeloperoxidase (MPO) deficiency (six totally deficient) and 16 patients with secondary partial MPO deficiency were tested using two different anti-MPO antibodies, in combination with either a flow-cytometric technique or an immunoalkaline phosphatase staining method. Results demonstrated three different cytofluorimetric patterns of immunoreactivity with the MPO protein: (a) a bright MPO antigenic expression, typical of patients with secondary MPO deficiency (comparable to that observed in the control group); (b) a medium MPO antigenic expression, typical of subjects with primary partial MPO deficiency; and (c) a dim MPO antigenic expression, characteristic of individuals with hereditary total MPO deficiency. No significant differences in granulocyte MPO reactivity were demonstrated for the two antibodies. Furthermore, in two individuals with complete primary enzyme deficiency, the single histogram analysis of MPO fluorescence determined by flow cytometry seemed to show that only 38% (case 1) and 44% (case 2) of neutrophils were reactive with the anti-MPO antibodies: the use of multiple histogram analysis in combination with Kolmogorov-Smirnov statistics allowed us to demonstrate that all the cells express a low density of MPO antigen. These data were more or less confirmed by the APAAP labeling method, which showed a reduced staining only in subjects with primary deficiency, while all patients with secondary deficiency had scores similar to those observed in controls (healthy subjects). Compared with the immunoenzymatic technique, the flow-cytometric procedure showed a higher sensitivity to MPO, being able to estimate even minor decreases in neutrophil MPO antigenic expression, as previously postulated by other authors. This work suggests that patients with primary MPO deficiency have different amounts of MPO antigens in the neutrophil granulocytes, and the levels of MPO fluorescence seem to decline concurrently with enzyme activity, thereby suggesting the presence of a diminished MPO production. In contrast, the normal antigenic reactivity of neutrophils from patients with acquired MPO deficiency indicates the presence of a functionally inactive form of the enzyme.

Notes: Abstract. An electro-optical characterisation of a polymer-dispersed liquid crystal (PDLC) based on unsaturated polyester (UP) resin, recently prepared in our laboratory, is presented. Transmittance and response times as a function of an electric field applied to the sample, have been measured taking into account also the morphological aspects of various samples. The experimental results confirm the theoretical data previously calculated on the base of the dimensions of the liquid-crystal droplets inside the polymeric matrix. Our analysis on this new material suggests the possibility of employing such a PDLC to realise electro-optical devices.

Notes: Abstract A block-copolymer of the type A–B–A was synthesized from a commercial polybutadiene rubber (PBD) and an unsaturated polyester (UP) prepolymer. The reaction process was monitored via Fourier transform–infrared spectroscopy. The obtained copolymer was used as compatibilizing agent for UP/PBD blends. Fracture measurements performed on the cured materials demonstrated a substantial enhancement of tougheness in the presence of the copolymer. The morphological analysis of the fracture surfaces showed that the presence of the compatibilizing agent produced a strong reduction of the size of the rubber particles, a better interface adhesion and an increase of localized shear yielding in the UP matrix around the rubber particles.

Notes: Abstract A thermosetting matrix based on an unsaturated polyester resin was employed to realise a Polymer Dispersed Liquid Crystal (PDLC) system by a UV induced curing process. A molecular, morphological and thermo-optical characterisation of this system is presented. The chemical and structural properties were investigated by transmission FT-IR spectra in the near infrared frequency range and by dynamic-mechanical analysis. The results indicated that, upon curing, the matrix retains its intrinsic properties even for compositions very rich in the LC component (40 wt %). The morphology, investigated by optical and electron microscopy, showed phase separation before and after the curing process. Image analysis demonstrated that the cured materials had morphological features suitable to achieve interesting thermo-optical properties. In particular, the composition containing 40 wt % of LC exhibited the typical behaviour of a thermo-optical switch. Interesting optical bistability effects were also demonstrated for this particular composition.

Notes: Abstract Telechelic extended perfluoroether oligomers containing carboxylic acid terminal groups were found to be miscible in mixtures of a tetrafunctional epoxy resin (TGDDM) and methyl nadic anhydride. After curing the resin system remained transparent. SAXS examination revealed the presence of a two-phase morphology with domains of the order of 16–17 nm. The glass transition of the cured resin system showed a maximum at perfluoroether concentrations in the region of 5% and remained at about the same level as the unmodified system at concentrations as high as 20 wt %. The critical strain energy release rate (Gc) for these systems was found to increase very rapidly in the region of 5 to 15 wt % fluoroligomer to reach values about 8 times higher than those obtained for the control resin system. This was accompanied by a small reduction in modulus and yield strength. The main reason for the enhanced toughness, however, is attributed to the increased size of the yield zone at the crack tip. The fluoroligomer modified cured resin systems exhibited an unusual change in water diffusion characteristics. At about 15 wt % concentration of fluoroligomer modifier the diffusion coefficient increased by a factor of 70, while the equilibrium water absorption was reduced by more than 10 wt %.

Notes: Abstract The recycling of a particular internal car component with a multilayer structure such as the dashboard has been extensively investigated. On this item, based on polyolefins, a thermal, spectroscopic, mechanical and morphological analysis has been performed. The recycled material showed a strong worsening in the mechanical and impact properties due to the occurrence of thermo-oxidative and thermo-mechanical degradation phenomena taking place during processing. A limited improvement in the mechanical behaviour has been obtained by adding, during the recycling, a suitable antioxidant and stabiliser additive. A more significant enhancement has been achieved in terms of deformation at break, impact toughness and overall morphology when an ethylene-propylene copolymer and virgin polypropylene were added to the formulation during the recycling process. By this procedure materials with properties suitable to be reused for the same or for similar applications within the car have been obtained.

Notes: Abstract Blends of a tetrafunctional epoxy resin and a thermosetting bismaleimide (BMI) resin cured with 4,4′-diamino diphenyl sulfone were investigated. Information on the conversion ofthe reactive groups upon curing was obtained by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. Dynamic-mechanical tests carried out on both dry and wet samples indicated the formation of an IPN-like structure and a considerable reduction of the plasticizing effect of the water absorbed in the presence of BMI. Sorption measurements at 70 °C revealed a reductionof the equilibrium water uptake with respect to the neat epoxy matrix, and a slight increase of the apparent diffusion coefficient. Furthermore, the presence of BMI enhanced such properties as the flexural elastic modulus and the compressive yield stress while reducing slightly the fracture parameters KIc, and GIc (critical stress intensity factor and critical strain energy release rate, respectively), as a consequence of the reduced ability of the IPN network to be plastically deformed under loading. © 1998 Kluwer Academic Publishers

Notes: A tetrafunctional epoxy resin and a thermosetting bismaleimide resin were modified by adding a thermoplastic polyether imide, commercially available as Ultem 1000. Dynamic-mechanical data and electron microscopy analyses demonstrated that a two-phase system was obtained in both the cases after the curing and postcuring processes. A marked increase of the toughness parameters Kc and Gc was found for both the epoxy and BMI-based blend systems. The toughening effect has been interpreted in the light of the fractografic analyses performed by scanning electron microscopy.
