Notes: Abstract Objective To evaluate pressure control ventilation (PCV) delivered through a minit-racheotomy in treating severe flail chest trauma. Design Case report. Setting Intensive care unit of a trauma center. Patient A 34-year-old woman affected by flail chest trauma and acute respiratory failure, who was initially treated with tracheal intubation to obtain internal pneumatic stabilization. The patient failed extubation and noninvasive mask treatment (pressure support ventilation plus PEEP) due to poor chestwall mechanics. Interventions Minitracheotomy was performed and ventilation was achieved with high levels of inspiratory pressure (PCV or assisted PCV) to overcome the resistance of the cannula (Mini-Trach II, Portex, ID 4 mm). Esophageal and carinal pressures were monitored. Ventilatory treatment was always performed with the full cooperation of the patient; the patient's glottic function was always intact. Measurements and results The patient was successfully treated with pressure control ventilation delivered through the Mini-Trach. After 7 days of PCV, the patient was switched to assisted PCV. On the 20th day after admission, she was weaned from mechanical ventilation. Conclusions We conclude that a suitable gas exchange and pneumatic stabilization in a flail chest condition can be achieved using minitracheostomic ventilation. At the same time, this treatment could reduce some side effects of traditional tracheal intubation.

Notes: Conclusions These data suggest that CSS should only be used with selected ventilatory settings. Comparing VC with PC we can conclude that PC seems to minimize the decrease in pressure due to suctioning, and that the Servo300 protects the patients from negative airway pressure better than the S900C.

Notes: Abstract Reflection high energy electron diffraction has been used to investigate the amorphous to polycrystalline structure transition in silicon induced by laser pulse. The power density of the ruby laser pulse, in the free generation mode, has been maintained below the threshold to induce surface damage. Depth analysis has been carried out in 〈100〉 silicon crystal using the channeling effect technique.

Description / Table of Contents: Riassunto L'erosione e la decomposizione di idrocarburi solidi indotte da irraggiamento con fasci ionici quali protoni, elio e argo sono state studiate in funzione dell'energia dello ione incidente nel range keV÷MeV.
Notes: Summary Erosion and decomposition of solid hydrocarbons under bombardment with proton, helium and argon ions is studied as a function of ion energy in the keV÷MeV range. Methane (10K), benzene (77K) and polystyrene (300 K) show a strong molecular hydrogen emission with a complex behaviour as a function of ion fluence (1012÷1017ions/cm2). Dimer formation is observed in the irradiated volume and high yield is measured (200 dimers/ion) for all the samples. At high fluence a three-dimensional carbon-hydrogen network is formed whose thickness is proportional to the ion range.

Notes: Summary We describe in detail techniques and qualitative results of experiments conduced in our laboratory at Catania (Italy) on the production of stable residing dark (polymerlike) material obtained by bombarding methane frosts with fast (100÷1500) keV proton beams. We give, in particular, results on the cross-section of the process and show that this occurs along the intere ion path so that thick residues are obtained. The thickness of the residues has been measured by bothin situ and remote analysis that also give information on the surface roughness and on the chemical composition. The purpose of the experiments is to get some insight into the possibility that the interaction between energetic ions and hydrocarbon frosts is responsible of the build-up of dark carbonaceous materials widely thought to be present in many astrophysical scenarii. Some astrophysical applications are, in fact, discussed in a correlated paper.

Notes: Summary Fluorine depth profiles have been measured into enamel of human teeth by using the nuclear reaction19F(p, α0)16O for incoming proton beam at 1350 keV. Details of fluorine distribution over a few micrometres have been obtained by comparison of the energy spectrum of alpha-particles from the reaction in teeth with that of the standard target of CrF3. The average concentration of fluorine is 1.5 mg/g in the enamel of healthy tooth, while the concentration is below 0.3 mg/g (MDL) in the caried zones. These values can reach 13 mg/g in the enamel of a fluorine tooth.
