Notizen: During 1969 and 1970 toxaemic patients attending the antenatal clinic at Sheppey General Hospital were admitted only if one or more of the following criteria were satisfied:1. The urine contained albumin on testing with Albustix.2. Urinary oestriol excretion was unsatisfactory.3. The obstetric condition and duration of gestation were such that either labour was to be induced or the baby delivered by elective Caesarean section. No case of eclampsia was seen. A maternal death followed a Caesarean section for accidental haemorrhage. The perinatal death rate in toxaemic patients fell from 4·8 to 3·1 per cent. The hospital bed days utilized by toxaemic patients were reduced by 72 per cent. Tt was concluded that testing of the urine for albumin by the patient herself might replace early admission in the prevention of eclampsia and that neither admission nor placental function testing were necessary for the protection of the baby in non-albuminuric toxaemia unless there was evidence of impaired fetal growth.

Notizen: An ornamented, dome-shaped cavity, partially filled with mudstone, 4 m in diameter at its circular base and 1 m in height occurs in fluvial sandstone of the Carboniferous Boss Point Formation near Sackville, New Brunswick, Canada. The cavity formed by differential weathering and erosion of the mudstone. Its origin is enigmatic though its size, shape and relationship to the underlying mudstone bed on which it rests suggest a diapiric origin for the mudstone that filled it. On the other hand, the ornamentation on the cavity surface includes flute moulds, suggesting an erosional origin for the domal structure.Of the four principal hypotheses for its origin the one preferred by the authors involves formation by diapiric intrusion of semi-fluid mud into liquefied sand, soon after deposition. The ornamentation on the cavity surface would have formed as part of the intrusion process. Structures akin to flute moulds have been produced experimentally in support of this interpretation by differential flow across a cement-mix-mud interface in a flow box and also by diapiric intrusion of mud in a soft cement mix. By analogy the flute moulds on the cavity surface could have been formed in the same way. By this interpretation, primary sedimentary processes need not be invoked to explain their occurrence on either this cavity surface or on the numerous other mudstone cavity surfaces that are ubiquitous in the Permo-Carboniferous of eastern Canada. Results of this study have important implications with respect to the potential diversity of origins of flute moulds in general.

Notizen: In order to test the collimation correction methods routinely applied to small-angle X-ray scattering data, scattering curves for several samples have been obtained both with a Kratky camera and with a Beeman four-slit collimation system. Since the two collimation systems used quite different slit arrangements, there were appreciable differences in the measured curves obtained with the two systems for a given sample. However, after the appropriate collimation corrections had been applied, the corrected curves were nearly identical. This agreement, which is not surprising because of the thorough tests previously applied to collimation correction procedures, indicates that in the correction of experimental curves, no unforeseen problems appear that are not present in the earlier, more idealized tests, which employed test functions to simulate experimental curves. A comparison has been made of a few other properties of the two collimation systems, including the intensity obtainable for a given resolution.

Notizen: Two different small-angle X-ray scattering methods have been used to determine the electron density of the particles in a colloidal silica suspension. In the first method, the electron density of the particles was calculated from the measured change of the zero-angle scattered intensity caused by the addition of known quantities of sucrose to increase the solvent electron density. In the second method, the scattering from the suspension was compared with the scattering from a nearly ideal gas. Within an experimental uncertainty of about 5%, the electron density of the silica particles was found by both methods to have a value corresponding to pure SiO2 particles with the mass density 2.28 g.cm−3 which is listed in the manufacturer's literature describing the suspensions. This determination of the electron density will enable these suspensions to be used as standard samples in determinations of the ratio of the scattered intensity to the incident intensity.

Notizen: On one of his many visits to India Kingsley Martin was once asked how he saw the prospects for Western Europe. His reply was that he was very optimistic as most of the leaders of Western Europe then were very old. If the transition from age to youth in national leadership is a sufficient basis for hope, we certainly have much to be grateful for in India. And our young Prime Minister has already struck a very responsive chord among large sections of Indian society by his promise of change. His mother had won the 1980 election on the promise of a ‘Government that works’. Mr Gandhi promised in 1984 a ‘Government that works faster’—thus heralding a promise of greater efficiency in general. When asked about the objective of his new Government, he used the now famous phrase that his objective was to take India into the twenty-first century. Taken at its face value, this was a rather vacuous phrase. It is not necessary for anyone to carry India, Atlas-like, into the twenty-first century. It would arrive at our doorstep in due course, as it will at everyone else's, and most probably without even a whimper.
