Notizen: Abstract. How can we distinguish images of a plant that needs watering from images of the plant in good condition? We show that simple geometric and colorimetric methods can measure stem flaccidity and leaf pallor, which can indicate the thirstiness of a plant.

Notizen: Abstract Following the study of migration processes in the continuous domain in Part I of this paper, we reformulate the concept of migration in the discrete domain (Zm) and define Discrete Migration Processes (DMP). We demonstrate that this model is a natural discrete representation of the continuous model and maintains the model's features in a qualitative sense. We show that under discrete migration any discrete set shrinks to a limit in finitely many iterations. The discrete representation provides an advantageous basis for digitally implementing the MP model. Using this implementation we illustrate the discrete migration of various types of sets under various types of constraints.

Notizen: Abstract In this paper the general concept of a migration process (MP) is introduced; it involves iterative displacement of each point in a set as function of a neighborhood of the point, and is applicable to arbitrary sets with arbitrary topologies. After a brief analysis of this relatively general class of iterative processes and of constraints on such processes, we restrict our attention to processes in which each point in a set is iteratively displaced to the average (centroid) of its equigeodesic neighborhood. We show that MPs of this special class can be approximated by “reaction-diffusion”-type PDEs, which have received extensive attention recently in the contour evolution literature. Although we show that MPs constitute a special class of these evolution models, our analysis of migrating sets does not require the machinery of differential geometry. In Part I of the paper we characterize the migration of closed curves and extend our analysis to arbitrary connected sets in the continuous domain (Rm) using the frequency analysis of closed polygons, which has been rediscovered recently in the literature. We show that migrating sets shrink, and also derive other geometric properties of MPs. In Part II we will reformulate the concept of migration in a discrete representation (Zm).

Notizen: Abstract The rate of approach (ROA) of a moving observer toward a scene point, as estimated at a given instant, is proportional to the component of the observer's instantaneous velocity in the direction of the point. In this paper we analyze the applicability of Green's theorem to ROA estimation. We derive a formula which relates three quantities: the average value of the ROA for a surface patch in the scene; a surface integral that depends on the surface slant of the patch; and the contour integral of the normal motion field around the image of the boundary of the patch. We analyze how much larger the ROA on the surface patch can be than the value of the contour integral, for given assumptions about the variability of the distance to points on the surface patch. We illustrate our analysis quantitatively using synthetic data, and we also validate it qualitatively on real image sequences.

Notizen: Abstract Regression analysis (fitting a model to noisy data) is a basic technique in computer vision, Robust regression methods that remain reliable in the presence of various types of noise are therefore of considerable importance. We review several robust estimation techniques and describe in detail the least-median-of-squares (LMedS) method. The method yields the correct result even when half of the data is severely corrupted. Its efficiency in the presence of Gaussian noise can be improved by complementing it with a weighted least-squares-based procedure. The high time-complexity of the LMedS algorithm can be reduced by a Monte Carlo type speed-up technique. We discuss the relationship of LMedS with the RANSAC paradigm and its limitations in the presence of noise corrupting all the data, and we compare its performance with the class of robust M-estimators. References to published applications of robust techniques in computer vision are also given.

Notizen: Abstract In this paper we propose a new model,Frenet-Serret motion, for the motion of an observer in a stationary environment. This model relates the motion parameters of the observer to the curvature and torsion of the path along which the observer moves. Screw-motion equations for Frenet-Serret motion are derived and employed for geometrical analysis of the motion. Normal flow is used to derive constraints on the rotational and translational velocity of the observer and to compute egomotion by intersecting these constraints in the manner proposed in (Durić and Aloimonos 1991) The accuracy of egomotion estimation is analyzed for different combinations of observer motion and feature distance. We explain the advantages of controlling feature distance to analyze egomotion and derive the constraints on depth which make either rotation or translation dominant in the perceived normal flow field. The results of experiments on real image sequences are presented.

Notizen: Abstract The problem of off-line handwritten character recognition has eluded a satisfactory solution for several decades. Researchers working in the area of on-line recognition have had greater success, but the possibility of extracting on-line information from static images has not been fully explored. The experience of forensic document examiners assures us that in many cases, such information can be successfully recovered. We outline the design of a system for the recovery of temporal information from static handwritten images. We provide a taxonomy of local, regional and global temporal clues which are often found in hand-written samples, and describe methods for recovering these clues from the image. We show how this system can benefit from obtaining a comprehensive understanding of the handwriting signal and a detailed analysis of stroke and sub-stroke properties. We suggest that the recovery task requires that we break away from traditional thresholding and thinning techniques, and we provide a framework for such analysis. We demonstrate how isolated temporal clues can reliably be extracted from this framework and propose a control structure for integrating the partial information. We show how many seemingly ambiguous situations can be resolved by the derived clues and our knowledge of the writing process, and provide several examples to illustrate our approach.
