Notizen: The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of post-curing by heat on the mechanical properties of visible-light (V-L) cured three inlay composites and three posterior filling composites. One group was only photo-cured according to the manufacturers' recommended methods, while the other group was heat-treated at 100°C for 15 min following initial cure by V-L. Knoop hardness, diametral tensile strength and compressive strength were measured to evaluate the mechanical properties. Cure performance was checked out by the solvent immersion test. Upon secondary-curing by heat, it was confirmed that the mechanical properties of the composites were increased moderately and the cure performance of the composites was also improved.

Notizen: Rods of a visible-light-cured dental composite resin were photo-polymerized and immersed in water at 37°C for 7 days. The residual monomers (TEGDMA and Bis- GMA) trapped in the set composite and those eluted into water were analysed by gas-liquid chromatography. It became evident that minor amounts of the residual monomers dissolved in water, but that most residual monomers remained in the set composite. Extension of the irradiation period contributed to the significant reduction in the residual monomer level and its elution into water.

Notizen: Summary Inorganic fillers in seven visible-light (VL)-cured dental composite resins were examined for their size, composition, phase and content, employing the following analytical instruments. SEM observations indicated that five samples could be classified into the hybrid type while the remaining two belonged to micro-filled and sub-micron types. EDX analyses revealed that five samples contained BaO while others lacked BaO. XRD analyses showed that three were in vitreous phase, two were in the crystalline phase and two were mixtures of both. DTG thermal analyses indicated that the hybrid type composites had the higher inorganic filler content (wt%) than the composites of two other types. In conclusion, wide varieties exist in the inorganic fillers in VL-cured dental composite resins currently utilized.

Notizen: The aim of this study was to evaluate in-vitro wear by two types of slurry of 10 commercial composite resin materials (seven hybrid and three microfilled composites). There was great variation in the in-vitro wear pattern by two types of slurry. The wear rate of microfilled composites was greater than that of hybrid composites, and a negative correlation was observed between wear rate and Knoop hardness values among all materials when hydroxyapatite slurry was used. In contrast, the wear rate of hybrid composites was greater than that of microfilled composites when abraded by green carborundum slurry. These abraded surfaces were compared with SEM micrographs of in-vivo composites surface after 4 years of service. The profile of in-vivo wear surfaces was found to be similar to that of in-vitro wear surfaces abraded with hydroxyapatite slurry.

Notizen: Microwave polymerization was used to make composite resin inlays and the effect examined of the concentration of polymerization initiator for the base monomer. The monomers used were 2,2-bis[4-(3-methacriloxy-2-hydroxypropoxy) phenyl] propane (Bis-GMA) and triethyleneglycol dimethacrylate (TEGDMA). Bis-GMA and TEGDMA were mixed in a ratio of 6:4 by weight and were separated into five groups. To each group was added benzoyl peroxide (BPO) in the ratios of 0·1, 0·3, 0·5, 0·7 and 0·9 wt% as the polymerization initiator. These were used as the base monomers. The results showed that the degree of conversion of the cured sample increased with increasing concentration of BPO from 0·1 to 0·5 wt%, however there was no significant difference at 0·5, 0·7 and 0·9 wt% (P〉0·01). Compression strength, diametral tensile strength and the Knoop hardness showed a similar tendency as the degree of conversion. No significant difference was recorded in the Knoop hardness between the top and the bottom surfaces (P〉0·01), which suggested a uniform polymerization in the cured sample. Thus, microwave polymerization would be an efficacious method for making resin inlays with the addition of BPO to the base monomer (Bis-GMA:TEGDMA, 6:4). The maximum conversion was found at a concentration of 0·5 wt%.

Notizen: To evaluate the usefulness of polylactic acid (PLA), a bioabsorbable and plastic polymer, as a carrier of bone morphogenetic protein (BMP), a preliminary study has been carried out to investigate any negative effect of PLA on osteoinduction of demineralized bone (DB). PLA (10,600mol. wt) was mixed with DB particles (1– 1.5 mm square) prepared from rat femurs and laid subcutaneously on the intercostal muscle of 4-week-old Wistar rats. The PLA/DB pellets were harvested at 2, 4, 8 and 24 weeks after the operation, and prepared for light microscopic examination. Histological examination revealed cartilage formation at 2 weeks and new bone formation at 4 weeks. Extensive bone and marrow formation were observed at 24 weeks. PLA was gradually absorbed and completely disappeared at 24 weeks to be replaced by connective tissue. These results demonstrate that PLA does not have a negative influence on the osteoinductive activity and that PLA could well be a promising bioabsorbable carrier of BMP.

Notizen: We examined the effects of phosphoric acid, the most common enamel etchant in composite resin therapy, on dentine collagen. Dentine collagen pretreated with 7 M phosphoric acid was shown to be more susceptible to trypsin digestion than untreated collagen. This susceptibility increased with increasing duration of exposure to the acid. The results indicate that phosphoric acid induces a conformational change in dentine collagen (denaturation or perturbation) similar to that observed with 0.39 M HCI, which has a similar pH value (0.65). However, phosphoric acid-pretreated dentine collagen, when treated with tannic acid for 2 h, became as resistant to tryptic digestion as intact dentine collagen. The present results suggest that tannic acid may work as a dentine conditioner in composite resin therapy, in view of the fact that phosphoric acid etchant is applied, either deliberately or inadvertently, to dentine, and would thus induce denaturation or perturbation of collagen.

Notizen: The importance of thromboxane A2(TXA2), one of the arachidonate metabolites, in the pathogenesis of bronchial asthma has been emphasized recently. Because aerosolized administration of antiasthmatic drugs is effective and safe, this study examined the effect of aerosolized TXA-2 receptor antagonist (S-1542) on allergic bronchoconstriction in passively sensitized and mechanically ventilated guinea pigs. Under the cover of antihistamine, antigen-induced bronchoconstriction was markedly inhibited by pretreatment with aerosolized S-1452 inhalation in a dose-dependent manner. Although aerosolized S-1452 itself provoked weak bronchoconstriction for its partial agonist effect, bronchial responsiveness to inhaled histamine did not change 10 min after S-1452 inhalation. These results indicate that aerosolized S-1452 may be useful in treating bronchial asthma.

Notizen: 1. The CaCl2-induced contraction of guinea-pig isolated vas deferens, pre-treated with tetrasodium edetate and then transferred to edetate-free sucrose medium, was increased in the presence of MnCl2 in extremely low concentrations (0005-001 mmol/l) but was suppressed by the salt in concentrations higher than 1 0 mmol/1.2. The KCl-induced contraction of the preparation, kept in a sucrose medium without edetate-pretreatment, was suppressed by MnCl2 (0 005-0 5 mmol/l) in a concentration-dependent manner.3. The noradrenaline-induced contraction of the preparation kept in Locke's solution, was not influenced by MnCl2 in concentrations lower than 0 1 mmol/l but was inhibited by higher concentrations (0 1-1 0 mmol/l).

Notizen: 1. When guinea-pig isolated vas deferens was pretreated with 0·01% tetrasodium edetate in an isotonic sucrose medium and then transferred to an edetate-free sucrose medium, the addition of CaCl2 (0·28–8·80 mmol/1) induced a contraction.2. When the edetate-free sucrose medium was replaced by saline containing NaHCO3 and glucose, the contraction induced by CaCl2 was only slightly smaller than that obtained in the sucrose medium.3. When the saline medium was replaced by Ca-free Locke's solution, the contraction induced by CaCl2 was almost the same as that obtained in the saline medium.4. When the Ca-free Locke's solution was replaced by Ca-free K-Locke's solution (in which NaCl and CaCl2 were replaced by KCl), the contraction induced by CaCl2 was almost the same as that obtained in the sucrose medium.
