Notizen: Physical Science Laboratory's new generation of spherical grating monochromators incorporates a laser interferometer to control scan angle and an in-vacuum absolute angle reference, as well as other improvements. The design accommodates up to six gratings which can be moved axially (under motor control, with encoder position readback) at any scan angle. The gratings are cooled by means of spring-loaded clamps which conduct heat to a water-cooled plate. The instruments feature hollow roller bearings on the scan axis to minimize bearing runout, and a pseudosine-bar drive for precise control of grating angle. The interferometer angle-measuring optics are mounted inside the vacuum chamber and measure the angle between the grating scan axis and the instrument's granite base. The laser interferometer measures the grating angle with a resolution of approximately 0.02 arcsec over the entire scan range of 40°. To provide a reference for the interferometer angle measurement, we have built an in-vacuum optical reference which uses custom chrome-on-glass reticles mounted inside the vacuum chamber. Collimated light from a source outside the vacuum passes through the reticles to yield quadrature signals which precisely define an absolute reference angle for the interferometer. Repeatability of the grating angle is within a range of ±0.05 arcsec. Two of these instruments are in operation at SRRC (Taiwan) and a third instrument has been delivered to NSLS (Brookhaven). © 2002 American Institute of Physics.

Notizen: : Daily-to-weekly discharge during the snowmelt season is highly correlated among river basins in the upper elevations of the central and southern Sierra Nevada (Carson, Walker, Tuolumne, Merced, San Joaquin, Kings, and Kern Rivers). In many cases, the upper Sierra Nevada watershed operates in a single mode (with varying catchment amplitudes). In some years, with appropriate lags, this mode extends to distant mountains. A reason for this coherence is the broad scale nature of synoptic features in atmospheric circulation, which provide anomalous insolation and temperature forcing that span a large region, sometimes the entire western U.S. These correlations may fall off dramatically, however, in dry years when the snowpack is spatially patchy.

Notizen: 1. The rat hippocampus 1l-β-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase (11-HSD) displays a different substrate specificity to that of other tissues. S1 nuclease analysis was used to determine whether the hippocampal messenger RNA is different from that found in other tissues.2. SI nuclease analysis using probes spanning the full length cDNA demonstrated that there were no differences in sequence between the hippocampal 11-HSD and the enzyme originally cloned from the liver.3. These results suggest that there may be multiple 11-HSD isoforms in the hippocampus with different substrate specificities.

Notizen: The Lex Plotia Agraria is known to us only by name through a single reference in one of Cicero's letters, from which we can extract nothing more than a terminus ante quern and a very general notion of its probable scope. Gabba in a short article, after reviewing the different hypotheses about this law, decided in favour of a suggestion put forward originally by Zumpt, that it belongs probably to the year 70/69 B.C.; and identifying it with a law referred to in a passage of Dio, he argued that the law was passed on behalf of Pompey's and Metellus Pius' veterans of the Spanish war. Following a suggestion of Niccolini he identified Plotius with the Plotius, tribune 70/69 B.C., who was responsible for the Lex Plotia de reditu Lepidanorum, and the date of his tribunate he put in 70 B.C. With Gabba's reasoning and general conclusions the present writer is in agreement, namely, that the law belongs to 70/69 B.C., and aimed at providing land for the veterans of Pompey and Metellus; the object of this note is to draw attention to a piece of evidence which has hitherto been strangely neglected, and to draw some possible inferences about the scope and fate of the law.

Notizen: A study of the personality of Cato Censorius is both interesting and instructive because of the times in which he lived, a period which began with the Hannibalic War and included those fateful fifty years of the second century which ordered the destiny of Rome herself and indirectly of the whole world. In the shaping of that destiny Cato played a not unimportant part, and the interest of the man lies both inwhat he did and in his reactions to the events which confronted him. Such a study also throws light on ancient biographical methods. To the ancient mind the personal element was by far the most important for the understanding of history; the individual acquired a correspondingly higher value and importance in the interpretation of movements and events; and in a time when the State was confronted with many problems, the men who strove to deal with them in different ways assumed importance in men's minds as provoking those very problems which they were only trying to solve.

Notizen: The conspiracy which so tragically and so dramatically ended Caesar's life on the Ides of March, 44 b.c., is one of the best-known episodes of Roman history; for it has been given its tragic and dramatic setting by Shakespeare himself, who saw so clearly its tragic quality. Yet as we look back over two thousand years upon this incident, pregnant with fate, as it was, for Rome's and the western world's future, we tend naturally, I think, to regard with something of contempt the conspirators, many of them Caesar's friends, who could thus dare to dishonour friendship with their great friend's blood, and cloak envy and selfishness with hypocrisy's specious covering. Yet it must be remembered that sixty men, no less, were joined in this conspiracy; we cannot lightly condemn all of them for hypocrisy and spite; and even if our final verdict should be unfavourable, it is wrong to pass it without attempting to penetrate to some degree into the minds and motives of these men, to try to understand why they could, and thought they should, commit a crime so seemingly damnable.
