Notes: Abstract Changes in intracellular distribution of recent (labelled) photosynthate during light-dark incubations were consistent with overnight consumption of low molecular weight compounds and carbohydrate, but continued protein synthesis, in sea ice algae from Resolute Passage, Canada, during April and May, 1986. Synthesis of labelled protein at night varied with preceding light availability but was always less than 30% of the daytime rate. Comparisons of labelled photosynthate dynamics against oxygen consumption and net changes of particulate matter composition and concentration showed that soluble polysaccharide was not the only major metabolic substrate, and that much of the carbon lost overnight was not recent, labelled photosynthate. Total net lipid synthesis was greatly underestimated by labelled photosynthate allocation. However, overnight consumption of the labelled lipid was directly proportional to photon flux density in the preceding light period, suggesting a short-term energy storage function for the small labelled portion of the total lipid pool. Arctic ice algae appear to incorporate only limited amounts of recent photosynthate into their large lipid pools even over a full 24 h photoperiod.

Notes: Abstract Tracer exchange kinetics were consistent with the view that microplankton of waters near Hawaii produced and assimilated dissolved orthophosphate and dissolved compounds other than orthophosphate at roughly equal rates in experiments conducted in September, 1982. Using simple exchange models plus chemical measurements, we inferred that material other than orthophosphate could sometimes dominate the soluble molybdate-reactive pool (SRP), as is frequently the case in fresh waters. Where phosphorus exchange was most rapid, the tracer kinetics suggested that some fraction of the plankton community was disproportionately responsible for dissolved phophorus exchange. Comparisons against independent measurements of rapid phytoplankton turnover in these communities supported the conclusion that dissolved compounds other than orthophosphate were rapidly cycled and formed an important substrate for plankton growth.

Notes: : Daily-to-weekly discharge during the snowmelt season is highly correlated among river basins in the upper elevations of the central and southern Sierra Nevada (Carson, Walker, Tuolumne, Merced, San Joaquin, Kings, and Kern Rivers). In many cases, the upper Sierra Nevada watershed operates in a single mode (with varying catchment amplitudes). In some years, with appropriate lags, this mode extends to distant mountains. A reason for this coherence is the broad scale nature of synoptic features in atmospheric circulation, which provide anomalous insolation and temperature forcing that span a large region, sometimes the entire western U.S. These correlations may fall off dramatically, however, in dry years when the snowpack is spatially patchy.

Notes: The Lex Plotia Agraria is known to us only by name through a single reference in one of Cicero's letters, from which we can extract nothing more than a terminus ante quern and a very general notion of its probable scope. Gabba in a short article, after reviewing the different hypotheses about this law, decided in favour of a suggestion put forward originally by Zumpt, that it belongs probably to the year 70/69 B.C.; and identifying it with a law referred to in a passage of Dio, he argued that the law was passed on behalf of Pompey's and Metellus Pius' veterans of the Spanish war. Following a suggestion of Niccolini he identified Plotius with the Plotius, tribune 70/69 B.C., who was responsible for the Lex Plotia de reditu Lepidanorum, and the date of his tribunate he put in 70 B.C. With Gabba's reasoning and general conclusions the present writer is in agreement, namely, that the law belongs to 70/69 B.C., and aimed at providing land for the veterans of Pompey and Metellus; the object of this note is to draw attention to a piece of evidence which has hitherto been strangely neglected, and to draw some possible inferences about the scope and fate of the law.

Notes: 1. The rat hippocampus 1l-β-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase (11-HSD) displays a different substrate specificity to that of other tissues. S1 nuclease analysis was used to determine whether the hippocampal messenger RNA is different from that found in other tissues.2. SI nuclease analysis using probes spanning the full length cDNA demonstrated that there were no differences in sequence between the hippocampal 11-HSD and the enzyme originally cloned from the liver.3. These results suggest that there may be multiple 11-HSD isoforms in the hippocampus with different substrate specificities.

Notes: The objective of this study was to identify soil nutrient availability conditions that would allow the establishment of key species of the Molinia caerulea-Cirsium dissectum fen meadow. The restoration site was a species-poor agriculturally improved pasture that had received no inorganic fertilizer for greater than 13 years. Treatments designed to reduce site fertility included: cutting and removal of herbage, cultivation, fallowing and topsoil removal. Straw and/or lignitic-clay were incorporated as soil amendment treatments. Cirsio-Molinietum species were either sown or planted as seedlings on treated plots. Neither soil nitrogen nor potassium availability, per se, appeared to limit the establishment of Cirsio-Molinietum species, whereas enhanced phosphorus availability did. Removal of the top 15–20 cm of soil reduced the total soil phosphorus amount by about 85 percent and depleted plant P availability. Nutrient-poor and relatively calcium-enriched soil exposed by topsoil removal allowed the development of a community with affinities to the Cirsio-Molinietum typical fen meadow. Redundancy analysis indicated the existence of marked vegetational gradients within the topsoil removal treatments that were influenced by the straw and the lignitic-clay amendments. The way in which these two amendments influenced edaphic conditions were unclear. Where the topsoil was not removed the vegetation became dominated by a few competitive species and although many of the planted Cirsio-Molinietum species were still present after four years, they were found only in trace amounts. Removal of most of the soil organic matter was a practical success in that it created suitable edaphic conditions for all the planted Cirsio-Molinietum species to remain well established.
