    Notizen: Co–Cr–Ta thin film media produced by transfer deposition are known to be highly anisotropic. Earlier experimental work shows these films achieve the maximum theoretically possible δI in the parallel direction but small deviation from zero transverse to the sputtering direction. A thin film micromagnetic model has been extended to simulate this highly anisotropic behavior. It was found that anisotropic exchange coupling was insufficient to account for the anisotropic behavior. Good agreement with experiment has been obtained using an approach which modifies the exchange coupling and the magnetostatic interaction. The large values of δI are ascribed to difficulties in the production of the ac demagnetized state. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

    Notizen: Fibrous and crystal structures of a helical polymer, poly-L-lactic acid (PLLA), were analyzed by using x-ray diffraction experiments. It was confirmed that the molecular residues were arranged on a nonintegral 10/3 helix as De Santis and Kovacs [Biopolymers 6, 299 (1968)] reported. The atomic positions in a monomeric unit, which were proposed by Hoogsteen, Postema, Pennings, ten Brinke, and Zugenmaier [Macromolecules 23, 634 (1990)], were validated. However, the previous reports on the positions of the two helical chains were found to be in error. The correct positions were determined. The second helical chain shifts from the base center by 0.45, 0.25, and 0.61 A(ring) along a, b, and c axes. Besides, the second chain rotates by 2.46° with respect to the first. Distribution function of the crystallites in various drawn fibers were determined as a function of spiral angle. Optical gyrations of PLLA and poly-D-lactic acid fibers were successfully measured by using high accuracy universal polarimeter, as functions of temperature and drawing ratio. By using x-ray data of the change of the fibrous structure by drawing treatments, the gyration tensor components of PLLA could be calculated. It is of great interest that gyration tensor component g33 along the helical axis is extremely large, ∼(3.85±0.69)×10−2, which corresponds to a rotatory power of (9.2±1.7)×103°/mm, about two orders of magnitude larger than those of ordinary crystals. This is the first experimental evidence that helical polymers will produce enormous optical activity in the solid state. Helical polymers will be important for the elucidation of gyro-optical properties of solids and promising for new optical applications utilizing their large optical activity. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

    Notizen: The magnetic properties of orthorhombic PrPtAl with TiNiSi-type crystal structure and a nonmagnetic crystalline-electric field (CEF) ground-state singlet were investigated by measurements of specific heat, magnetic susceptibility, magnetization, and electrical resistivity. The results illustrate that in PrPtAl magnetic exchange interactions are strong enough to overcome the singlet–singlet CEF splitting of 21 K and to induce long-range magnetic order at TC=5.8 K. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.

    Notizen: Beam position monitors (BPMs) for the SPring-8 synchrotron have already been designed and manufactured. Each BPM pickup has four button-type electrodes, and the output signals from the electrodes are switched by fast PIN-diode and are measured by signal detection systems. Eighty BPMs and four detection systems are placed around the synchrotron. Calibration of beam position of the 80 BPMs was finished successfully. In this paper, we present the structure of the BPM pickup, the electronics of the signal detection system, and the calibration system. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

    Notizen: The construction of the SPring-8 booster synchrotron was started in 1993. The synchrotron has a two-fold symmetric lattice composed of 40 FODO cells. There are 30 normal cells and 2 straight sections, and it is composed of 64 bending magnets. The integral values of the magnetic field of the bending magnets were measured, and adequate results were obtained. The power supply of the bending magnets, which must be operated following a trapezoidal excitation-curve of the output current, is being constructed and tested now. This report presents the results of the integral values of the magnetic field of the bending magnets and the excitation-curve measurement of the power supply. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

    Notizen: The specification and the layout of the booster synchrotron for SPring-8 were decided. The synchrotron is designed to accelerate electron or positron beams from 1 to 8 GeV with a repetition cycle of 1 Hz. The construction of the synchrotron was started in 1993. First, one bending, one quadrupole, and one sextupole magnet were made and the results of the magnetic field measurement were acquired. Two septum, one bump, and one kicker magnets for the beam extraction have been made, the field measurement and a few improvements have progressed. The high power test of the first rf cavity was finished successfully. The calibration test of the button position monitor with the signal treatment circuits is advanced now. The residual components of the synchrotron are designed and constructed, and the commissioning of the synchrotron will start in 1996. This paper presents the first measurement of each component. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

    Notizen: Thermodynamic and transport properties of heavy Fermion (HF) U compounds show similar behavior to HF Ce compounds. Although most of the magnetic properties of HF Ce compounds can be qualitatively understood on the basis of the impurity Kondo model, no such consensus for HF U compounds has been reached. In addition to this, the single-site properties of U impurities are not understood so well, in contrast to the case of Ce impurities. Recent works for dilute U systems reported new features as are not seen in dilute Ce systems. We have investigated a dilute-U2Zn17 system of (La1−zUz)2Zn17 in order to reveal the single U ion site properties of this system by preparing single crystals. The impurity contributions to various physical quantities such as ρimp(T), χimp(T), and Cimp(T) can be scaled by the U concentration between z=0.025 and 0.05, and the system is considered as in the dilute limit still for z=0.05. The electrical resistivity shows the typical impurity-Kondo upturn at low temperatures. The electronic specific-heat coefficient is strongly enhanced (γimp(approximate)1.5 J/K2 mole U) and about 4 times as large as that for dense U2Zn17. Suppressions of the Kondo effect by the magnetic field are seen in γimp(H) and magnetoresistance. The relatively large anisotropy in χimp(T) indicates an existence of the crystal field. These features of this system will be explained in terms of the Kondo effect in the presence of the crystal field. ©1997 American Institute of Physics.

    Notizen: Although the solubility of Cu in Cr is negligible in the equilibrium state, Cu precipitates were discovered in extensively cold-rolled Cr ribbons of Cu-15 wt % Cr in situ composite by means of analytical transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and high-resolution electron microscopy (HREM).     Notizen: We report the second harmonic generation and electroluminescent (EL) properties of a soluble metal complex polyurethane (PU). The PU was prepared by the reaction of a zinc Schiff base with 4,4′-diphenylmethane-diisocyanate. The polymer film has been effectively poled under a corona field and its linear and nonlinear optical (NLO) properties were characterized. The results indicated that the NLO effects of the polymer are mainly originated in the distorted coordination tetragonals formed by the central zinc atoms and coordination atoms. The polymer shows strong photoluminescence under a ultraviolet-lamp illumination and can be used as a luminescent material for EL devices. © 1997 American Institute of Physics.

    Notizen: Swelling equilibrium has been studied on N-isopropylacrylamide gel which is randomly but slightly incorporated both by trisodium salt of copper chlorophyllin and by sodium acrylate. An ionic gel with both hydrophobic interaction and hydrogen bonding was found here to display hysteretic behavior in swelling degree with an interesting nature when the pH is cycled between 7 and 12. In the shrinking transition to the collapsed state observed during pH decrease, there are two different processes characterized by the first order phase transitions with different pHs (7.3 and 7.6). These could be selected whether or not the pH had been increased beyond the threshold (pH=9). Namely, in the larger pH region beyond the threshold, the gel can reswell larger than the first swollen state which appeared directly from the collapsed phase. The hysteretic behavior as well as the irreversibility observed in higher pH region than the threshold was attributed to the screening effect on the ionic groups in the gels because of excess Na+ ions from NaOH that is introduced for increasing the solvent pH. A simple theoretical model is presented to qualitatively explain the phenomena on the basis of the Landau theory. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.
