Notizen: Abstract Charged particle fluxes on satellites in highly eccentric Earth orbits are studied, using data from ISEE1 and EXOSAT missions. The effects of minimum-ionizing particles, low-energy electrons and secondary radiation produced by these particles on CCDs used as X-ray detectors are identified. A technique to discriminate events caused by minimum-ionizing particles from X-ray events is proposed. The need for a deflecting system against low-energy electrons with focusing X-ray optics is demonstrated. An expected secondary radiation spectrum behind a typical detector shielding based on Monte-Carlo-simulations is presented. For the EPIC detectors on XMM, detection rates due to this radiation environment are estimated.

Notizen: Fundamental thermodynamic interaction data for various solvents with two styrene-butadiene-styrene triblock copolymers (Kraton D-1101 and Kraton D-1300X) have been collected by the use of inverse gas chromatography at infinite dilution. Experimental results are presented for nine D-1101/solvent systems and nine D-1300X/solvent systems at 308, 328. and 348 K. Weight-fraction activity coefficients and Flory-Huggins χ interaction parameters have been calculated from the retention volumes. The χ parameter is used as a measure of the strength of interaction and therefore as a guide in the prediction of polymer-solvent compatibility. In addition, partial molar heats of mixing, ΔHm∞, and heats of solution, ΔHs, were determined. The Hildebrand-Scatchard solubility theory was combined with the Flory theory in order to estimate the solubility parameter of the thermoplastic rubbers at the three different temperatures.

Notizen: According to the Flory-Huggins theory for polymer blends, the polymerpolymer interaction parameter, χ23, must be positive for incompatible polymers. Previous studies of the incompatible ternary system chloroform-polystyrerne-butadiene rubber yielded negative values of χ23 using a solution method based on the Flory-Huggins theory with the chloroform-butadiene rubber interaction parameter used as input. An alternate solution method using the chloroform-polystyrene interaction parameter as input has been used to obtain positive values of χ23 for this incompatible system. This variation in results indicates that the interaction parameters obtained using the Flory-Huggins theory are not physically meaningful. They are, however, useful as correlating parameters. Both sets of results, although quite different, are shown to correlate the experimental data identically well. In addition, the appropriate equations are presented for the case where one of the solvent-polymer interaction parameters is concentration dependent.
