Notizen: Mixed-oxide coatings are extensively used in the electrochemical industry. Secondary-ion mass spectrometric data confirm that technological research can indeed find a new way of controlling precursors, synthesis conditions, purity of coatings and electrodic activity. Results obtained by argon and oxygen primary-ion bombardment of RuO2/TiO2, IrO2/TiO2, RuO2/IrO2/TiO2 films are reported. The presence of metal, metal oxide and cluster ions suggests a more systematic use of secondary-ion mass spectrometry in the elucidation of catalytic aspects. In-depth profiles of some ionic species and their correlation with parameters that induce significant modifications can help in the understanding of the solid state physics and inorganic chemistry involved.

Notizen: We report here a study by negative-ion fast-atom bombardment (FAB) mass spectromatry of branched oligosacharides containing a 3-O glyesidie linkage. Our result show that discrimination of the monosaccharide unit linked in the 3-O position is made possible by the analysis of the negative-ion FAB mass spectra. In the mass spectrum of A-trisaccharide (α-Fuc1-2-(α-GalNAc1-3)-Gal) the peak at m/z 307 can be explained as elimination of a neutral molecule of GalNAc(221 u) from the molecular ion. Also in the mass spectrum of 3-fucosyllaactose (α-Fuc1-3-(β-Gall-4)-Glc) an intense peak at m/z 323, corresponding to the elimination of the fucose linked at the 3 position of glucose is present. To investigate further the fragmentations of the 3-O-linked sugars, the negative-ion FAB mass spectra of disaccharides have also been studied.

Notizen: The recent development of specific and sensitive surface techniques has prompted new studies of electrode properties, in particular of their catalytic activity. Many papers have reported the use of X-ray photoelectron spectrometry, Rutherford backscattering spectrometry, secondary ion mass spectrometry etc. in the analysis of mixed-oxide films, and interesting results concerning electrochromic and catalytic properties have been shown. The influence of the method of preparation has also been confirmed, together with the important role of microstructural composition. In previous studies, our group performed composition analyses and depth profiles of RuO2/TiO2 and IrO2/TiO2 mixed-oxide coatings by secondary ion mass spectrometry (SIMS). Many positive-and negative-ion species are of particular interest in characterizing electrodes synthesized by different methods. This paper presents the results obtained by SIMS analysis of IrO2/RuO2/TiO2 films before and after their use in CI2 anodic production. Mass spectra obtained under different experimental conditions are reported and the aspects related to surface compositon modifications induced by Cl2 evolution on electrode films are discussed.

Notizen: Within a comprehensive programme including synthesis via metal organic chemical vapour deposition (MOCVD) and characterization of inorganic compounds and materials of possible interest in technologies based on thin films, results concerning the deposition of metal oxides by means of volatile organometal precursors are reported. In particular, thallium oxide films obtained by the MOCVD technique and commercial powders of Tl2O3 and Tl2O adsorbed on several metal substrates (stainless steel, Si, Cu, Mo, Pt) were studied by secondary ion mass Spectrometry (SIMS) under ion beam bombardment at different ion energies. The positive- and negative-ion mass spectra exhibit typical isotopic patterns of several ionic species produced by interesting interfacial reactions, and the analysis of their relative abundances provides a measure of oxide reactivity towards different substrates. SIMS measurements of metal substrates were also performed. The ability and limits of SIMS in the reactivity study of thallium oxide powders and films and, in addition, in the identification of reaction products evidencing impurity species that, in turn, can be ascribed to the substrates or to the precursors used for the oxide synthesis is pointed out.

Notizen: Air and waste samples coming from poultry breeding farms have been analysed by means of thermal desorption coupled to the gas chromatographic/mass spectrometric technique. The solid samples not only showed the presence of organic compounds such as acids, sulphides, benzopyrroles and phenols originated by anaerobic biotransfor-mation of the natural products, but also the occurrence of anti-oxidant substances: 2,6-di-tert-butylcresol, 2,6-di-tert-butylphenol and two of their oxidation derivatives. In the air, four artificial benzoquinones were detected, two of which had already been identified in the solid waste. In this work, the mechanism by which oxidized compounds are formed, is suggested.
