Notizen: The purpose of this investigation was to determine the effects of stannous fluoride mouthrinses containing 250 or 1000 ppmF on plaque accumulation, gingivitis, microbial composition of plaque, and the ability of saliva to produce acid, in 48 subjects who abstained from oral hygiene for 5 days. Plaque formation was significantly lower in both SnF2 groups. Clinical gingivitis and gingival fluid measurements did not differ. Significant reductions in viable plaque organisms were provided by the fluoride rinses. No change was noted in the proportions of aerobic, anaerobic, gram-positive, or streptococcal bacterial populations. Both fluoride rinses inhibited the ability of saliva to lower the pH of a sugar solution.

Notizen: A five-day study in 48 subjects, conducted in the absence of customary oral hygiene, measured the effects of a single topical application of stannous fluoride or acidulated phosphate fluoride alone or in a 1:1 combination. All fluoride concentrations were 1.25%. At the end of the study no effects on dental plaque and gingivitis were detected. During the study the flouride treatments, particularly those containing SnF2, temporarily restricted the ability of the saliva to lower the pH of a sucrose solution.

Notizen: Abstract The distribution of three radioactively labelled salicylate derivatives with low ulcerogenic activity was compared with that of acetylsalicylic acid (ASA) and salicylic acid using whole body autoradiography and liquid scintillation counting techniques in rats. The methyl ester of ASA (AME) was distributed in vivo very similarly to that observed with ASA and salicylic acid. AME is rapidly demethylated following absorption from the stomach and is subsequently converted to ASA and salicylate. Salicylate is the main metabolite produced from both AME and ASA, which specifically accumulates in inflamed tissues. The 3-methyl-and 6-methyl-substituted salicylic acids are not as rapidly absorbed as either ASA or salicylic acid and do not pass readily into the brain or bone marrow. These results show that the methyl (ester) group of AME (which adequately protects the gastric mucosa from damage caused by ASA itself) does not impair the quantity of pharmacologically active form of drug (salicylate and ASA) generated in vivo. However, insertion of the methyl group at the 3- and 6-position of salicylic acid markedly affects both absorption, distribution and pharmaco-activity of these acids.

Notizen: Abstract Delayed fracture in brittle materials may be demonstrated by observing the change in bend strength over a range of constant stress rates to failure. A simple technique has been developed to analyse this behaviour making efficient use of the experimental data. Based on a model incorporating theories of stress corrosion and brittle fracture, with Weibull statistics, the technique provides estimates of relevant parameters using the method of maximum likelihood. Confidence intervals of estimates, the significance of any observed rate effect, and the validity of the model are also assessed. The technique is demonstrated by applying it to data from bend tests on soda-lime glass and WC-Co materials.

Notizen: Summary Following a 5 hours ethylene treatment, cortical cells of Pea (Pisum sativum L. var Alaska) epicotyl third internode showed a change in the orientation of both microtubules near the plasma membrane and recently deposited cellulose microfibrils. Control cortical cells had mostly transverse microtubules. The ratio of the average frequency of transverse to longitudinal microtubules was 6.0. After 5 hours of ethylene treatment, cortical cells had mostly longitudinal microtubules, with the ratio of transverse to longitudinal microtubules equal to 0.1. Epidermal cells were more variable than cortical cells with regard to the frequency of longitudinal and transverse microtubules. Observation of cortical cell walls in conventionally stained thin sections revealed that recent deposition of microfibrils had been primarily transverse in almost all of the control cortical cells sampled. In contrast, more than half of the ethylene-treated cortical cells had recent deposition oriented primarily longitudinally. This change in microtubule and microfibril orientation may be early enough to constitute the primary effect of ethylene leading to radial cell expansion.

Notizen: The photoinitiated copolymerization of N-vinyl pyrrolidone onto woolen substrates from aqueous solutions has been studied. A novel water-soluble photosensitizer, 4-(sulpomethyl) benzil sodium salt (Quantacure SKS - patent pending), has been developed and its efficiency assessed with and without an amine synergist. The initiator is nonmutagenic within the terms of the Ames testing procedure. Induction periods were not observed. The action of the so-called synergist, dimethylaminoethanol, was to reduce or stop the grafting reaction. The significance of the pH of the aqueous medium is shown by a maximum in grafting being observed at pH = 4.0 for otherwise standard conditions. Aspects of impregnation procedure were examined, marked improvements in the grafting level being achieved by use of preliminary evacuation - freeze/thaw cycles.

Notizen: The spines of 35 rabbits (32 New Zealand white and 3 AC/J), ranging in age from 3 months to 8½ years, were investigated systematically for spontaneous degenerative changes. Three types of lesion were observed. (1) The nucleus pulposus underwent chondroid metaplasia throughout the length of the vertebral column by the age of 2 years. (2) Hydroxyapatite deposition was found in the nucleus pulposus in 12 of 20 animals examined roentgenographically. The lesion occurred principally in the distal thoracic segments and was first observed in 3-month-old rabbits. (3) Spondylosis occurred in each of four macerated spines from animals 〉24 months old. Portions of the spine spared by disc calcification were affected.
