Notizen: Abstract This paper describes a three-step finite element method and its applications to unsteady incompressible fluid flows. The stability analysis of the one-dimensional purely convection equation shows that this method has third-order accuracy and an extended numerical stability domain in comparison with the Lax-Wendroff finite element method. The method is cost effective for incompressible flows, because it permits less frequent updates of the pressure field with good accuracy. In contrast with the Taylor-Galerkin method, the present three-step finite element method does not contain any new higher-order derivatives, and is suitable for solving non-linear multi-dimensional problems and flows with complicated outlet boundary conditions. The three-step finite element method has been used to simulate unsteady incompressible flows, such as the vortex pairing in mixing layer. The properties of the flow fields are displayed by the marker and cell technique. The obtained numerical results are in good agreement with the literature.

Notizen: Finite element procedures and related illustrative numerical examples for incompressible viscous fluid motion are discussed in this paper. The steady flow problem is solved by the Newton-Raphson method and the perturbation method. By numerical examples, it can be shown that the combined use of the Newton-Raphson method and perturbation method is suitable. For the analysis of unsteady flow, the perturbation method is employed. Assuming that the basic flow is known, unsteady flow is calculated by accumulating the solution of the linearized equation in which the boundary values are varied by small amounts. Steady flows of temperature dependent free convection are also discretized and analyzed by the same procedure as the conventional finite element Galerkin method. For shape functions, quadratic polynomials are used for velocity and temperature, and linear polynomials for pressure. It is to be noted that the selections of shape functions and solution method are the keys to the analysis of highly non-linear fluid flow problems such as those discussed in this paper.

Notizen: This paper presents the finite element method of the analysis of tidal flow. Assuming that tidal flow is periodic, the Galerkin approach is employed as the numerical integration procedure in time using a trigonometric function as the interpolation function. The present method has shown to be suitable for computation especially from the point of computing time and numerical stability.

Notizen: Finite element analysis of unsteady flow of two-dimensional incompressible viscous fluid is presented employing stream function as a field variable. The Galerkin approach is applied in the procedure of discretizing in time. Using trigonometric series as the interpolation function, the non-linear algebraic simultaneous equation system is derived. Several numerical examples show the adaptability of the formulation.

Notizen: To estimate wave motion, the finite element method is presented based on the linear interpolation function and two-step explicit numerical integration in time. For the determination of free surface position, the two-step scheme based on the Eulerian technique is usefully employed. Travel and run-up of solitary wave have been analysed and compared with the analytical solution. Both results are reasonably well in agreement. This method is applied to estimate the wave force on the practical breakwater to show the validity of the method.

Notizen: There are many physical phenomena which can be handled by the Helmholtz equation. The equation explains certain phenomena of wave propagation. This paper presents a new finite element method to analyse surface wave motion. The characteristic point of this method is that the interpolation equation is chosen to satisfy the governing Helmholtz equation using trigonometric functions. This follows that the variational functional to be minimized can be formulated such that the integration is limited to the boundary of the element. The numerical solutions obtained are compared with analytical and experimental solutions. From these comparative studies, it is concluded that the present method provides a useful tool for the analysis of surface wave motion.

Notizen: This work presents control of vorticity for buoyancy-driven flows. The governing set of equations includes Navier-Stokes and heat transfer equations. The basic formulation for the control problem is derived using Lagrange multipliers and the Pontryagin minimum principle. Control values are found using the Sakawa-Shindo method. Control was accomplished using velocity components. Numerical examples present control of vorticity for Rayleigh-Bernard convection in an enclosed cavity for a wide range of Ra numbers. The current formulation proved reliable and fast. Optimal control was obtained and turned out to be adequate. © 1998 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

Notizen: A finite element method is proposed for the analysis of density flow which is induced by a difference of density. The method employs the idea that density variation can be pursued by using markers distributed in the flow field. For the numerical integration scheme, the velocity correction method is successfully used, introducing a potential for the correction of velocity. This method is useful because one can use linear interpolation functions for velocity, pressure and potential based on the triangular finite element. The final equations can be formulated using the quasi-explicit finite element method. A flume in a tank with sloping bottom has been analysed by the present method. The computed results show extremely good agreement with the experimental observations.

Notizen: Two dimensional sloshing analysis has been carried out by the Lagrangian finite element method. For the integration in time, the velocity correction method with the same interpolation functions for velocity and pressure is successfully used. The Lagrangian treatment to pursue the free surface position is presented. The comparison with the experiments shows extremely good agreement. It is shown that the large amplitude sloshing waves in a container can be analyzed by the present method.
