    Notizen: Abstract Three paracrystalline lattice models for the interpretation of the small angle scattering of polyethylene are discussed: The “lattice model”, the “stapel model” (often referred to as the lamellar stack model) and the “proportional model”. While the applicability of the first model is restricted, the latter models differ in the statistical assumptions of lamellar and interlamellar thickness distributions. The principal advantage of the proportional model over the stapel model is its applicability through the adjustment of only three parameters: long period, crystallinity and one statistical parameter. Small angle X-ray curves of linear polyethylene are interpreted by the proportional model. The results are in good agreement with stapel model calculations.

    Notizen: Abstract The equatorial small-angle x-ray scattering of blends of polypropylene and polybutene-1 crystallized from the oriented melt, has been analyzed by means of Guinier- and Porod analysis and absolute intensity measurements. The thickness of the core crystals, which appear to have an ellipsoidal shape, is of the order of 160 Å and does not vary with sample composition. Measurements of the half widths of the (110)- and (220)-wide angle x-ray diffraction lines indicate a decrea.se of the lateral dimension of the core crystals for both components. Calculations of the scattering power through a three-phase model for the electron densities indicate a non-proportional distribution of crystalline and amorphous phases in the blends.

    Notizen: Abstract The axial density modulation of core-fibrils in polypropylene and poly (1butene) crystallized from the oriented melt has been investigated by calculating interface distribution functions of the small angle x-ray scattering. The density modulation along the fiber axis originates from the migration of chain defects in the early stages of crystallization in the shear-field. The lengths of the needle crystals are approximately three times higher than those of the distorted zones. The values of the interface lengths between crystals and zones of lower electron density, are matching well with the lengths of the distorted zones. This result confirms the concept of defect clustering.

    Notizen: Abstract The microstructure of trans-polyoctenamer has been investigated as a function of the trans double bond concentration and the type of regulator. The samples were characterized using GPC, DSC and X-ray wide and small angle scattering. The small angle scattering was analyzed by calculating interface distribution functions and by Guinier and Porod analysis. It was found that the microstructure is primarily determined by the trans content. The type of regulator has a minor influence.

    Notizen: Abstract Crystallization kinetic parameters, such as spherulitic growth rates, nucleation densities, and Avrami-exponents, have been determined by optical microscopy for isotactic polypropylene blended with atactic polystyrene. It is found that the crystallization of iPP is strongly influenced by the presence of polystyrene. With increasing PS concentration in the blend, the nucleation densities decrease, while the spherulitic growth rates as well as the positions of thermal peaks, measured by DSC, remain independent of sample composition. Due to the formation of interfaces as a consequence of increasing dispersion of polystyrene the nucleation changes from preferentially thermal to athermal.

    Notizen: Abstract The tensile properties of self-reinforced polypropylene composites, obtained by rapid extension of an isotactic polypropylene/atactic polypropylene melt, have been measured and correlated to morphological parameters derived from x-ray experiments. The longitudinal morphology of the core-fibrils is found to be independent of sample composition, while the lateral thickness of the fibers varies between 220 Å for iPP and 110 Å for the blend containing 50 wt.% aPP. Critical fiber lengths, as a function of sample composition and the elastic modulus and the yield stress of the fibers, could be determined. While the number of corefibrils increases with mass fraction of atactic polypropylene, the length of the lateral interface between fiber and matrix and the interface volume decreases with increasing aPP mass fraction. It is shown that this interface is responsible for the mechanical behavior of the composite by effecting the transfer of load from matrix to fiber.

    Notizen: Abstract The interaction of isotactic polypropylene with ethylene propylene diene terpolymer in their blends has been investigated by use of differential scanning calorimetry, dynamic mechanical analysis, wide- and small-angle x-ray scattering, and by investigating the nucleation and kinetics of crystallization of the iPP component under the polarization microscope. It is found, that the dispersion of the EPDM component in the iPP matrix is dependent on blend composition and is maximal at 10% EPDM content. An interface layer between the two components is formed by migration of iPP molecules into the EPDM phase. A model for this interface is proposed.

    Notizen: Summary Turbidity of the human lens is due to structural defects of the superstructure. These changes in structure are proportional to the turbidity of the lens. Small-angle X-ray diagrams of these systems give some insight into this deterioration.
