Notizen: Using the coverage grating-optical second-harmonic diffraction method, we have measured the diffusion rate of potassium on Re(001) in the coverage range of 0.6–1 ML. We observe a minimum in both the activation energy for diffusion and the diffusion preexponential at an initial potassium coverage of 0.75 ML. For potassium coverages of 0.93, 0.84, 0.73, and 0.59 ML, the activation energies for diffusion are determined to be 5.0±0.2, 3.9±0.7, 3.6±0.2, and 5.0±1.0 kcal/mol, and D0 is 5.6×10−3±0.3, 3.5×10−4±1.1, 5.8×10−4±0.3, and 3.7×10−1±1.9 cm2/s, respectively. The results are discussed in terms of electrostatic dipole–dipole repulsive interactions among neighboring adsorbates. © 1997 American Institute of Physics.

Notizen: Diamond films were deposited on ZnO:Al thin-film silica substrates by hot-filament chemical vapor deposition. Ultrasonic irradiation in a diamond suspension enhanced the diamond nucleation density on a ZnO:Al-silica substrate. The nucleation density and the growth rate of diamond film deposited on ZnO:Al thin film is higher than on the silica. The cracks on a ZnO:Al-silica substrate occurred during the diamond deposition process. It is proposed that the cracks were caused by the stress in ZnO:Al film and diamond film, and the peak frequency shift of the Raman line of diamond indicates the presence of compressive stress in the diamond film.

Notizen: Repulsive interactions of potassium on Re(001) were investigated using temperature programed desorption (TPD), work-function measurements, and optical second-harmonic generation (SHG). The TPD and work-function results were used for the first time to evaluate critically the validity of available electrostatic models for explaining simultaneously both sets of data. The activation energy for desorption in the limit of zero coverage was determined to be 68.4±0.1 kcal/mol, decreasing monotonically with increasing potassium coverage to 22.1±0.1 kcal/mol at a full monolayer (ML) coverage. The TPD data were fit well by a depolarization model which includes the adsorbate–surface distance. The work function decreases monotonically upon potassium adsorption until reaching a minimum value of 4.35 eV below the work function of the bare rhenium surface at a coverage of approximately 0.5 ML, after which the work function increased to an ultimate value of 3.00 eV below the work function of Re(001). The work function of the bare Re(001) surface was determined to be 5.26±0.05 eV. The work-function data were fit using a model which considers the change in work function assuming local contributions by the substrate and by the adsorbate, using the same parameters obtained from fitting the TPD data. SHG measurements were consistent with previous alkali–transition metal systems, including a characteristic resonantlike signal enhancement at a potassium coverage of 0.3–0.4 ML. The SHG data taken during potassium adsorption and desorption complement information obtained by TPD and work-function measurements. © 1997 American Institute of Physics.

Notizen: The different kinds of intense pulsed ion beam (IPIB) sources and their applications to surface modification of materials, e.g., IPIB technology, are reviewed. Intense pulsed energy effects on the surface microstructure as well as properties of 45# steel have been experimentally investigated in this work with different pulse parameters of the IPIB, such as current density and pulse duration. It is shown that ion beams with power density (106–108 W/cm2) are very promising ones, but the modification result is affected significantly by the pulsed ion beam parameters. New requirements to the IPIB sources for the industrial applications are discussed. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

Notizen: We report a method to monitor and control laser frequencies with an optical cavity and a digital feedback system. A frequency-stabilized He–Ne laser provides the reference that is transferred to several other lasers using a scanning Fabry–Pérot cavity. A personal computer-based multifunction data acquisition system generates the scan wave form, and reads the detector outputs synchronously with the cavity scan. The computer determines the positions of all of the peaks in the scan, and generates output signals to control the laser frequencies. It also provides a visual display of cavity spectra. We have successfully used the setup to achieve a long-term lock of the lasers for magneto-optical trapping of radioactive francium atoms. © 1998 American Institute of Physics.

Notizen: Using the self-consistent, 2-1/2-dimensional particle-in-cell MAGIC code, based upon the explosive emission model, we have simulated the characteristics of the proton flux extracted from a planar magnetically insulated diode with a 200-mm-wide and an 8 mm anode-cathode gap. Results of numerical calculation, e.g., the spatial distributions of the extracted proton current density vs time and the spatial distribution of particles in diode gap are presented at a diode voltage of 300 kV with 40 ns pulse duration and an externally insulating magnetic field of 0–4Bcrit. With the increase of the magnetic field, the uniformity of the extracted proton flux is significantly improved; however, the maximum of the proton current density and one of the proton energy density decrease from 150 to 45 A/cm2 and from 1.0 to 0.3 J/cm2, respectively, when B varied from 0 to 4Bcrit. The effects of the magnetic field on uniformity of the extracted proton flux are discussed in this article. © 2002 American Institute of Physics.

Notizen: A multiplate pseudospark chamber, whose electrodes were fabricated with different metal materials, was designed and tested as a metal ion source. The ion beam implantation combined with Rutherford backscattering (RBS) measurement was used to understand whether these ion beams come from the anode plasma or the cathode plasma. The RBS measurements have demonstrated the following results: (1) pseudospark produced metal ion beams mainly consist of ions from the cathode materials; (2) the ion beam current increases rapidly with the pseudospark discharge voltage first and then saturates; and (3) the energy of the extracted metal ions is much less than the voltage between the anode and the cathode, therefore the high discharge voltage does not correspond to the high ion energy. A possible mechanism of pseudospark producing metal ion beams is discussed. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

Notizen: We report measurements and calculations of x-ray diffuse scattering from the liquid–vapor interface of toluene and polybromostyrene(PBrS)/toluene solutions for polymer molecular weights 90 K and 1 M at concentrations up to 11.7 volume %, well into the entangled semidilute regime. We have calculated the static structure factor S(k) and equal time height–height correlation function C(R) for surface hydrodynamic modes based on a coupled two-fluid model where the polymer response is taken to be that of a Maxwell viscoelastic material [Harden et al., J. Chem. Phys. 94, 5208 (1991)]. We obtain the leading correction term to the capillary-wave result for C(R) dependent on the solution shear modulus E0, as well as an analytic approximation valid for large E0, including the case of pure polymer melt.
