Notes: Studies were carried out on the grafting of butyl acrylate (BA) to amylose by the ceric ion method. After removing the homo-PBA with THF and toluene, and the ungrafted amylose with 0.5NNaOH, the PBA content of the graft copolymers was determined by acid hydrolysis with 1N HCl. The influence of reaction time on the grafting yields was determined and the largest values were: 82% for the grafting efficiency, 246% for the percent grafting, 62% for the grafted amylose, 48% for the grafted PBA, and 64% for the total conversion.

Notes: Graft polymerizations of mixtures of methacrylonitrile with n-alkyl methacrylales onto amylomaize were carried out. The graft copolymers were characterized by both IR and 13C-NMR spectroscopies. The influence of the monomer feed on the grafting parameters has been studied. The variation of these parameters with the mole fraction of methacrylate in the feed for the first three systems studied, MAN/MMA, MAN/EMA and MAN/BMA, was similar: thus, percent grafting (%G, percent weight of grafted polymer with respect to grafted amylomaize), percent grafted amylomaize (%GA, percent weight of grafted amylomaize with respect to initial amylomaize), percent grafting conversion (%Cg, percent weight of grafted polymer with respect to initial monomer), and percent total conversion (%Ct, percent weight of total acrylic polymer with respect to initial monomer) were increased, but percent grafting efficiency (%GE, percent weight of graft copolymer with respect to total polymer) decreased. The system MAN/HMA presented values of grafting parameters lower than those of the previous systems. The optimum values were obtained at 0.6 HMA mole fraction in the monomer feed. When the number of carbon atoms of the n-alkyl group rises from 1 to 4, the increase of the n-alkyl group length gives rise to increases of the %G %Cg and %Ct values and decreases of the %GE and %GA values. For the largest methacrylate, the grafting reaction appears to be controlled by the lesser accessibility of the monomer to the active sites of the carbohydrate. © 1992 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

Notes: A study of the Ce(IV) ion consumption during graft polymerization of butyl acrylate with amylose was carried out. The Ce(IV) consumed was ca. 80% and the ratio of Ce(IV) to anhydroglucose units was 1/15. Poly(butyl acrylate) (PBA) chains were isolated from the grafted copolymer by the perchloric acid hydrolysis method. The molecular distribution was obtained by gel permeation chromatography (GPC). The number-average molecular weight (Mn) of the grafted chains was 276,000 and the weight-average molecular weight (Mw) was 1,320,000. The total number of grafted chains (mmol) ranged from 0.4410-3 to 8.710-3 (amylose from 0.08 g to 1.23 g). Frequency of grafting ranged from 1042 to 704.

Notes: Graft copolymerization of methacrylic acid (MetAc) onto potato starch using H2O2/Fe++ redox system was investigated. The best conditions of the grafting reaction were determined and several variables were studied: initiator and monomer concentrations, time, and temperature. Percent grafting efficiency, percent grafting, percent grafted monomer conversion, and total conversion were obtained. The optimum graft yield was obtained at 7.3 × 10-3M H2O2 concentration and it was favored by increasing the methacrylic acid concentration and reaction time.

Notes: Abstract The finding of natural infection of Rattus rattus by Fasciola hepatica on Corsica has stimulated further research into the role of the black rat in the epidemiology of fascioliasis. Corsican black rats were experimentally individually infected with 20 metacercariae from cattle and murine isolates obtained from naturally infected bovines and black rats. The following results were obtained: (a) in R. rattus infected with the cattle isolate, normal adult fluke development took place and infection persisted for a long period, with emission of eggs showing embryogenic capacity; (b) the development of F. hepatica adults paralleled the ontogenetic trajectories observed in other rodent-F. hepatica models; and (c) fluke adults obtained in R. rattus infected with the murine isolate exhibited a similar pattern. These findings strongly suggest that the black rat may be one of the wild reservoirs of F. hepatica and may have contributed to the large geographical extent of the disease on Corsica.

Notes: Abstract A study was done of the possible association between the development of common bile-duct stones and the presence of worms in rats experimentally infected with Fasciola hepatica. A total of 157 rats were individually infected with 20 metacercariae, and another 40 animals served as controls. The rats were dissected at 100, 200, 300, and 400 days postinfection (p.i.). A significant association was observed between the observation of stones and the presence of F. hepatica adults. The global frequency of bile-duct lithiasis in the parasitized rats was 22%, with a significantly lower incidence being observed in the younger group (100 days p.i.). Different analytical techniques were used to determine the main stone components. Energy-dispersive X-ray microanalysis showed calcium to be the main component in all cases (82–94%). Scanning electron microscopy, nuclear magnetic resonance ([1H]- and [13C]-NMR), and mass spectrometry revealed the predominance of palmitic (C-16) and stearic (C-18) acid.

Notes: A study of the ceric ion consumption during graft polymerization of methyl acrylate (MA), ethyl acrylate (EA), ethyl methacrylate (EMA), and butyl methacrylate (BMA) with amylose was carried out. Grafted acrylic polymers were isolated by the acid hydrolysis method. Weight-average and number-average molecular weights were determined by gel permeation chromatography (GPC). The number of grafted chains (mmol) ranged from 8.70 × 10-3 to 12.35 × 10-3 for acrylates and from 3.20 × 10-3 to 6.80 × 10-3 for methacrylates. These results were related to others obtained from the ceric ion consumption studies.

Notes: The acid hydrolysis method is usually utilized to separate acrylic polymer chains grafted onto amylopectin (AMP). The hydrolysis with the HCl acid has been found to be appropriate when we grafted hydroxyethyl methacrylate (HEMA) and hydroxypropyl methacrylate (HPMA). Using the perchloric acid method, various secondary reactions appear falsifying the grafting yields. © 1993 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

Notes: Grafted PMMA was isolated by the acid hydrolysis method. Weight-average and number-average molecular weights were determined by gel permeation chromatography. The number-average molecular weight of the grafted chains was about 475,000 for amylopectin and 403,000 for amylose. The number of grafted chains (mmol) ranged from 2.4 × 10-3 to 4.6 × 10-3 for amylopectin graft copolymers and from 2.9 × 10-3 to 6.8 × 10-3 for those of amylose. These results were related to others obtained from ceric ion consumption studies. The values suggest that amylopectin, because of its complex structure, favors a higher consumption of ceric ion in homopolymerization reactions and inhibits the initiation reactions of the copolymerization.
