    Notizen: Detailed measurements of voltage–current (E–J) characteristics have revealed a distinct low level resistive tail for silver-sheathed (Bi,Pb)2Sr2Ca2Cu3O10 superconducting tapes. The residual tail is observed at very low voltage (E≤10−8–10−7 V/cm) of the E–J curves and can be described by E∝(J−Jc')n, where Jc' is a field and temperature dependent critical current and n=1.0–1.2. The dynamic resistivity is, typically, in the range of 10−13 Ω cm, but could be as high as 10−11 Ω cm in some specimens. This residual resistance can be induced by a severe thermal cycling treatment, although it may also be intrinsic, i.e., as-grown, to some of the specimens. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

    Notizen: The magnetoresistance of epitaxial Nd0.7Sr0.3MnOδ thin films has been studied. A giant magnetoresistance, with more than 4 orders of magnitude change in resistance (−ΔR/RH(approximately-greater-than)106%), was obtained at ∼60 K and a magnetic field of 8 T. This giant magnetoresistance (GMR) ratio is about one order of magnitude larger than the highest value reported previously which was observed in La–Ca–Mn–O film. We have also obtained a large GMR ratio with −ΔR/RH(approximately-greater-than)3000% for H=5 T in an in situ Nd0.7Sr0.3MnOδ thin film, a much larger effect than the previous results in doped manganese oxide films in which a large GMR ratio was obtained only in postannealed samples. Our results also show that the GMR effect in these films can be strongly influenced by the thin-film preparation conditions. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

    Notizen: Abstract  The innervation of the human adrenal gland and of cortical lesions was studied in sections of cortical tissue (n=10), hyperplastic cortical tissue (n=3), and tissue from cortical adenomas (n=5) and carcinomas (n=6). The presence and distribution of nerve structures containing neuronal markers indicating sympathetic and parasympathetic innervation were studied by immunohistochemistry and the co-existence and co-localization patterns of the different markers by immunofluorescence. The cortex and hyperplastic cortical tissue had a moderate to rich supply of nerve structures containing the typical neuronal markers: protein gene product 9.5 (PGP 9.5), neuron-specific enolase (NSE), small vesicle synaptic protein type 2 (SV2), and nerves showing immunoreactivity to the adrenergic marker tyrosine hydroxylase (TH). All these immunoreactive nerves were located predominantly adjacent to blood vessels, but also among parenchymal cells. The cortex showed numerous nerve structures containing the neuropeptide substance P (SP), neuropeptide Y (NPY) and vasoactive intestinal protein (VIP), but few nerves containing these peptides were seen in hyperplastic cortical tissue. Typical markers were occasionally observed in cortical adenomas but were not found in carcinomas, except in a few cases where PGP 9.5 and NSE were present, but only adjacent to necrotic areas. Nerves containing NPY and VIP occurred in varying numbers in both adenomas and carcinomas. NPY- and VIP-immunoreactive nerve structures were seen mostly alongside blood vessels. There were several types of co-existence. For instance, NSE/VIP-, TH/VIP- and TH/NPY-immunoreactive nerve structures were often seen in the same trunk, but were only partly co-localized.

    Notizen: Abstract The thiadiazinone derivative [+]-EMD 60263 ((+)-5-(1-(α-ethylimino-3,4-dimethoxybenzyl)-1,2,3,4- tetrahydroquinoline-6-yl)-6-methyl-3,6-dihydro-2H-1,3,4 -thiadiazine-2-on) is a Ca2+-sensitizing agent with only minor phosphodiesterase inhibitory activity. Our aim was to characterize the inotropic and electrophysiological effects of [+]-EMD 60263 and its enantiomer [-]-EMD 60264 in several cardiac muscle preparations. The Ca2+-sensitizing activity resided in the [+]-enantiomer only. [+]-EMD 60263 (3 µM) shifted the EC50 of Ca2+ for contractile activation of skinned fibers of pig heart from 2.41 µM to 0.73 µM, whereas [-]-EMD 60264 (30 µM) was ineffective. In Langendorff-perfused guinea pig hearts, [+]-EMD 60263 and [-]-EMD 60264 induced concentration-dependent positive and negative inotropic effects, respectively; both enantiomers reduced spontaneous heart rate but did not influence perfusion pressure. The maximum increase in force of human atrial trabeculae was 35 % of pre-drug control with [+]-EMD 60263 in comparison to 113 % with forskolin. In guinea-pig papillary muscles, [+]-EMD 60263 and [-]-EMD 60264 had opposite inotropic responses, however, both agents similarly prolonged action potential duration. Both enantiomers concentration-dependently blocked the rapidly activating component IKr of the delayed rectifier in guinea-pig myocytes. The block saturated at potentials positive to +30 mV, closely resembling the effects of the antiarrhythmic agent E-4031 which had been originally used to define IKr. It is concluded, that the positive inotropic action of [+]-EMD 60263 can be explained by prevalence of the Ca2+-sensitizing effect. The accompanying prolongation in action potential duration is caused by block of the IKr component of the delayed rectifier. While the inotropic effects are stereoselective, most of the electrophysiological actions are clearly independent of sterical configuration. The combination of Ca2+-sensitizing with class-III antiarrhythmic action may provide an interesting pharmacological profile of potential therapeutic use.

    Notizen: Summary.  The complete nucleotide sequence and the predicted amino acid sequence of the adenovirus type 7 hexon gene were determined. The hydro-pathy of the hexon proteins from human adenovirus types 2, 3, 4, 5, 7, 12, 16, 40, 41, and 48, bovine adenovirus type 3, murine adenovirus type 1, and avian adenovirus types 1 and 10 was analysed. The presence of purines and pyrimid-ines in the second position of the codons was correlated to hydrophilicity and hydrophobicity, respectively. Comparison of the hydrophilicity plots of eight hexons showed seven hypervariable regions to be distributed on the surface. A large portion of the hypervariable regions manifests hydrophilicity. The strength of the surface charge accumulated on the hydrophilic and hydrophobic regions correlated to the tissue tropism of the different adenovirus types. Analysis of codon usage for adenovirus hexons showed that among synony-mous codons those with cytidine in the third position were preferably used to a great extent. Analysis of the nucleotide and amino acid sequence pair distances and the phylogenetic tree of 14 hexon proteins showed members of subgenera B, D and E to be closely related, especially Ad4 and Ad16, and subgenus A to be closely related to subgenus F.

In the crystal structure of (1) infinite chains each composed of an alternate arrangement of a twisted thiourea trimer and a nitrate ion are cross-linked to form a puckered layer and further hydrogen bonding between such layers leads to a channel host framework for accommodation of the cationic guests. In the crystal structure of (2) two independent thiourea molecules are used to construct a hydrogen-bonded puckered layer normal to the c axis, whereas the remaining thiourea molecule, together with the nitrate ion and water molecule, generate another puckered layer that is parallel to the first. Hydrogen bonding between these two types of layers gives rise to a channel system running parallel to the [100] direction and the cations are stacked regularly within each column. Compounds (3), (4) and (5) have closely related crystal structures in which the cations are separated by one-dimensional, infinitely extended thiourea–nitrate composite ribbons in a sandwich-like packing arrangement.
