Notes: Normal epidermis of various sites of human body was examined by N-(7-dimethyl-amino-4-methyl-3-coumarinyl)maleimidc (DACM) method for SH groups and SS linkages. The horny cells in the palm and sole showed a gradual occurrence of a SH membranous pattern, while those in other sites revealed an abrupt formation of the SH membranous pattern just above the granular layer. In the palm and sole epidermis the number of layers which exhibit membranous pattern of SH-positivity was thicker than that in the other epidermis; the low- through mid-layers of horny cells in the former sites seemed to contain not only SS-positive but also SH-positive substance at cell peripheries. The DACM staining for SS linkages showed the presence of a granular fluorescence in the cytoplasm of the granular cells of the epidermis in the human palm and sole, but not in other sites. The granular cells in human lip displayed a granular fluorescence in the cytoplasm by cither SH or SS DACM staining. All the SH- or SS-positive granular fluorescence was related to keratohyaline granules. These findings indicate that there may be some variations of the distribution pattern of the epidermal cellular proteins with SH and/or SS and a difference in chemical composition of keratohyaline granules between different anatomical sites of human body.

Notes: Abstract Two starfishes, “togemomijigai” Astropecten polyacanthus and “momijigai” A. scoparius were collected from the Seto Inland Sea in October 1983 through November 1984, and assayed for toxicity by the standard method for tetrodotoxin (TTX). Most of the 54 A. polyacanthus specimens assayed were toxic, with the highest toxicity score being 520 mouse units (MU) g-1. All seven A. scoparius were toxic, with the highest score being 46 MU g-1. The toxin from A. polyacanthus was purified by a method which consisted mainly of activated charcoal treatment, and chromatography on CM-Sephadex C-25 and Bio-Rex 70 columns. The purified starfish toxin showed a specific toxicity of 4 700 MU mg-1, a value which was almost comparable to that of authentic TTX. From the thin-layer chromatographic and electrophoretic behavior, along with 1H-NMR spectrum, A. polyacanthus toxin was identified as TTX.

Notes: Summary Human peripheral-blood leukocytes (PBLs) were found to form rosettes with cultured human epidermal cells or a mouse epidermal cell line (Pam cells), but not with fibroblasts, when preincubated with heat-inactivated sera from patients with pemphigus vulgaris. Increased rosette formation was observed, however, when untreated sera were used for passive sensitization. Complement was not required for this reaction, because purified IgG fractions from a protein-A/Sepharose column retained the ability to induce rosette formation. Blocking experiments with α-methylmannoside suggested that a carbohydrate moiety is involved in the binding of sensitized cells to epidermal cells. Thus, human PBLs can adhere to cultured mouse epidermal cells in the presence of PV IgG antibodies.

Notes: Abstract Tris (benzoylacetonato) technetium(III) and tris (2-thenoyltrifluoroacetonato) technetium(III) were synthesized by the direct reduction of pertechnetate with dithionite in the presence of excess ligands. The geometrical isomers of the benzoylacetonate were further separated by means of a silica gel column chromatography. In the silica gel system, the adsorption distribution coefficient of the tris (β-diketonato) technetium(III) decreases in the order of Tc(acac)3〉fac-Tc(bzac)3〉mer-Tc(bzac3)〉Tc(tta)3.

Notes: Abstract The anodic characteristics of a variety of amorphous palladium-base alloys were examined with a view to their use for the production of sodium hypochlorite by electrolysis of dilute sodium chloride solutions at ambient temperature. The corrosion resistance of palladium-metalloid alloys was obtained by alloying with platinum group metals and/or valve metals. Among these alloys, rhodium-containing alloys showed high electrocatalytic activities for chlorine evolution. Surface activation treatment was, however, necessary to obtain sufficiently high activities for chlorine evolution at low overpotentials. Surface-activated amorphous alloys possessed considerably higher current efficiency for chlorine evolution in comparison with currently used anodes.

Notes: Abstract Wire-shaped nickel-based amorphous alloys exhibiting high strength and good ductility combined with a high corrosion resistance were produced for Ni-Pd-Si and Ni-Pd-P alloys by melt spinning in rotating water. The amorphous wires were formed over a relatively wide range from 29 to 82 at % palladium for (Ni-Pd)82Si18 alloys and from 12 to 52 at % palladium for (Ni-Pd)80P20 alloys. The Ni-Pd-Metalloid amorphous wires had a circular cross-section and smooth surface, and their diameters were 80 to 150μm. With increasing nickel content, their tensile strength, σf, increased from 1340 to 1710 MPa and the elongation to fracture, εf, decreased slightly from 2.2% to 1.9%. Cold-drawing the wires was an easy technique to reduce their diameter and to increase σf and εf up to an appropriate value of reduction in diameter. In addition, it is also effective in smoothing the wire surface. Their corrosion resistance was assumed to be sufficiently high since their polarization behaviour in 1 N H2SO4 solution was similar to palladium metal. Cold-drawing did not enhance corrosion and rather decreased apparently the active dissolution current density of some alloys owing to smoothing of the surface.

Notes: Abstract For the purpose of studying the secretion of exogenous toxic metals into hair, relation between their concentrations in hair and those in organs, and the metal shift, Hg or Mn was orally administered to guinea pigs for protracted periods, the distributions of metals in hair and organs were examined by means of neutron activation analysis. It was found that the administration of Hg at high dose resulted in abnormally high Hg levels in hair from the 2nd dosing week and in organs after 25 week dosing, and in a reduced motor activity after 25 week administration. There occurred metal shifts in hair as well. Administration of Mn at high doses, on the other hand, showed no such biological influences, although a dose-dependent increase of Mn in hair was detected with time.
