    Notes: Summary In order to clarify further the neural control of digestive tract function, we have compared the neuronal localization of tyrosine hydroxylase (TH) and aromatic amino acid decarboxylase (AADC) in rat small intestine. Immunoreactivity for TH was found in numerous varicose axons associated with neurons of the enteric plexuses and in axons within the circular muscular coat and the mucosal villi. Axons with AADC immunoreactivity had a similar distribution, but were sparser in the enteric plexuses and musculature than those containing TH. Chronic extrinsic denervation of a segment of intestine removed all TH-positive nerves from that region. By contrast, the intensity of AADC immunoreactivity was enhanced and more AADC-positive axons were visible than in adjacent intact areas of intestine. The AADC-positive axons appear to represent the intrinsic ‘amine-handling’ neurons rather than intrinsic tryptaminergic neurons or extrinsic dopaminergic neurons, and the effect on AADC activity of removing the extrinsic nerve supply suggests that this normally exerts some restraining influence on the metabolism of the ‘amine-handling’ population.

    Notes: Abstract We explore the connection between perturbative and non-perturbative (path-integral) approaches to the axial anomaly. In particular, we show how the Jacobian associated with the fermionic measure corresponding to local axial transformations may be calculated directly from shift-of-integration-variable surface terms in four Euclidean dimensions. No regularization (explicit parametrization of UV infinities) is required in this approach, but invariance of the Jacobian under vector gauge transformations (i.e. preregularization) is required to remove a variable-of-integration ambiguity within the expression for the Jacobian of the fermionic measure.

    Notes: Abstract Double electron capture from He, H2, Ar, Xe atoms into 120 keV O6+ and from He into 80 keV C4+ ions is studied by 0°-Auger electron spectroscopy. Pronounced intensities of Coster-Kronig (L 1−L 23 n,n=5...14) decay lines indicate strong evidence for electron-electron interactions in a one-step two-electron transfer process. Lines from successive capture in two steps during a single collision populating quantum numbersn, n′ according to a classical barrier model are of comparable intensity. Predictions of final state populations from barrier model and Landau-Zener description are compared with experimental results.

    Notes: Abstract Argon and iodine recoil ions were produced by a 2 GeV U75+ beam and total one electron capture cross sections are measured for 198 eV/q Ar q+ (4≦q≦15) and I q+ (5≦q≦27 on He andH 2. The cross section can be approximately reproduced by 1/2 πR 2 according to the classical barrier model. Theq-dependences exhibit significant fluctuations even for high charge states.

    Notes: Although reported frictional coefficients in synovial joints are very low, a computer model of the human hip joint in simulated walking predicted a temperature rise of several degrees Celsius. To confirm this prediction, physical experiments were conducted in vitro on intact human hip joints dynamically loaded and articulated as in walking. Thermisters were placed in subchondral bone in both the acetabulum and femoral head, just below the cartilage layers. The surrounding saline bath was maintained at 37°C. Measured temperatures as high as 2.5°C above the 37°C were recorded in the subchondral bone. Loading that simulated the stance/swing phases of gait but without articulation produced no significant increase in temperature; thus fluid flow perse is not significantly energy dissipative; the prime source is friction at the articulating surfaces.
