Notes: Abstract The growth zone of the sporangiophore of a piloboloid mutant, pil, ofPhycomyces expands radially at an increased rate until the growth zone becomes nearly spherical, in sharp contrast to that of the wild-type sporangiophore which exhibits longitudinal elongation only and is conical. The rotation of thepil sporangiophore reverses its direction from clockwise (CW) to counterclockwise (CCW) during the period of increased radial expansion, and the CCW rotation continues as long as does the radial expansion. The direction of rotation and the time of reversal are correlated with the relative rates of cell-wall expansion in the longitudinal and transverse directions. The CCW rotation of the sporangiophore of this mutant can be explained by the behavior of the microfibrils, as previously proposed to explain the rotation of the wild-type sporangiophore.

Notes: Abstract A stability condition for Hopf-bifurcating solutions from the uniform equilibrium of clasical Lotka-Volterra interaction-diffusion equations is presented. Using this condition, it is shown that stable spatio-temporal oscillations exist in the framework of such equations.

Notes: Summary Localization of instilled 14C-bupranolol was studied in the rabbit eye by means of light microscopic radioautography. After the administration of 50 μl of 14C-bupranolol into the eyes of two rabbits, both eyes were enucleated at intervals of 15 and 30 min respectively, and radioautographic procedures were carried out on cryostat sections by means of both drymounting and wet-mounting methods. Although with the former it was possible to demonstrate many radioautographic silver grains in the specimens, with the latter it was not possible to detect their localization. On the dry-mounting procedure, radioautographic grains were observed mainly in the epithelium of the ciliary body 15 and 30 min after the administration of 14C-bupranolol. The numbers of grains were counted on the 15 and 30 min specimens. They were decreased in the conjunctiva, and cornea 30 min after the administration. On the contrary, they were remarkably increased in the epithelium of the ciliary body. From these results it is concluded that the 14C-bupranolol first penetrates into the epithelium of the conjunctiva and cornea, then moves rapidly to the ciliary body, and that only very small amount of 14C-bupranolol is changed into the insoluble form. Also, these results suggest that bupranolol plays a role in the control of aqueous production in the ciliary processes.

Notes: Summary Remarkable alteration was shown in capsular type antigen production in encapsulated strains ofStaphylococcus aureus stored by lyophilization for 10 years. This alteration was further elucidated by antibody production in rabbits immunized with the altered strain and by absorbing the antibodies with representative capsular type strains.

Notes: Abstract This paper presents a general review of the governmental activities in Japan on reference materials and evaluation of thermophysical properties data and then describes recent developments at the National Research Laboratory of Metrology (NRLM) in the field of thermophysical properties and related standards. As for reference materials, the past and present activities organized by the government and a few related associations are reviewed from the point of view of establishing traceability systems, whereas, on the evaluation of thermophysical properties, the framework of collaborative research for establishing data base systems by network sharing is mentioned. Then the recent studies of NRLM on the measurements and standards of thermophysical properties as well as its calibration services are summarized.

Notes: Abstract We have investigated the Josephson behavior in indium microbridges with 2 µm thickness, 5–8 µm width, and 9–21 µm length. The resistive behavior of the bridges can be described by a dynamic model consisting of an ideal Josephson oscillator emitting charge imbalance waves into the adjacent superconductor. From the analogy between the charge imbalance wave equation and the telegraph equation a useful equivalent circuit is obtained, as pointed out recently by Kadin et al. The Josephson behavior in the different regimes of amplitude and frequency of the rf current superimposed upon the dc current is discussed.

Notes: Summary Thirty albino rats were fed with a diet containing 1, 2 or 4% di-(2-ethylhexyl)-phthalate (DEHP), a peroxisome-proliferating agent. Others were fed with normal diet as controls. Both groups were sacrificed at varying intervals from 3 days to 4 weeks. The livers were either removed and fixed in glutaraldehyde and osmium tetroxide or fixed in glutaraldehyde, incubated in a diaminobenzidine (DAB) medium, postfixed, embedded in Epon, and sectioned. Other tissues were incubated in Eaglés MEM containing either [3H]thymidine or [3H]uridine, fixed, embedded in Epon, sectioned, and radioautographed. Specimens were observed in a Hitachi H-700 electron microscope. The number of peroxisomes showing DAB reactivity increased in DEHP-fed animals as compared with normal controls In radioautograms of normal rats labelled with [3H]thymidine, no silver grains were, observed, whereas grains were observed over some nuclei, mitochondria and peroxisomes of DEHP-fed animals. In contrast, radioautograms of tissue labelled with [3H]uridine revealed a few grains in nuclei and mitochondria or endoplasmic reticulum of normal rats, although grains appeared in nuclei, mitochondria, endoplasmic reticulum and peroxisomes of DEHP-fed animals more frequently. From these results, it is concluded that [3H]thymidine and [3H]uridine were incorporated in the proliferating peroxisomes, suggesting that nucleic acid synthesis had taken place.

Notes: Various methods of thermogravimetric analysis were compared in case of polystyrene degradation. The reaction order, the activation energy and the preexponential factor were evaluated from common TG curves experimentally obtained. In most cases a 5-mg sample of polystyrene with 110,000 molecular weight was decomposed at heating rate of 10°C/min. The reaction was found under this experimental condition to be of first order with activation energy of 61.0 kcal/mole, though there were slight differences depending on the analytical methods used.
