    Notizen: Abstract Distal radial fractures are common problems for the orthopedic surgeon, and various surgical treatments have been reported. However, each method has its indications, pitfalls, and limitations. It is important to select the appropriate procedure for the fracture pattern. We studied 115 consecutive patients including 45 patients with distal radial fractures treated with percutaneous pinning, 67 patients treated with external fixation, and 32 patients treated with assisted wrist arthroscopy. Percutaneous pinning was useful in extra-articular fractures and minimally comminuted intra-articular fractures, but was inadequate for patients with severe osteopenia and markedly comminuted intra-articular fractures. External fixation was indicated when intra-articular comminution was present. However, the dorsomedial fragment was often not reduced and maintained by this technique; additional pinning was needed to reduce this fragment. A dynamic-type fixator was feasible for younger patients who required early functional recovery. Arthroscopy provided accurate visualization of the wrist joint and the intra-articular fracture.

    Notizen: Abstract This paper describes shear and tensile deformation of bicrystalline aluminum by computer molecular dynamics. A bicrystal model with a [001] (310) ∑=5 tilt grain boundary is used for simulations. The simulations show that the effect of temperature on both the shear and tensile deformation is represented by a Boltzmann factor exp (-Q/k B T) and that the deformation is thermally activated in a typical manner. We found that the activation energy Q for the high temperature range, where T is higher than approximately 500 K to 600 K, is significantly larger than that for the low temperature range. This result shows that there are different deformation mechanisms between high and low temperatures. The activation energy difference is considered to be caused by a structural transition at the grain boundary.

    Notizen: Abstract The sol-gel reactions of methyl- and vinyltrimethoxysilane under controlled conditions provided the corresponding polysilsesquioxanes and flexible thin films on further condensation of the precursors. Silicon oxycarbides containing a large amount of free carbon 58 mol% and 90 mol% were obtained in high yields 90 wt% on pyrolyzing the precursors of polymethyl-and polyvinylsilsesquioxane at 1400°C under N2 atmosphere, respectively. Moreover, pyrolytic polycondensation of polyvinylsilsesquioxane was found to give the silicon oxycarbide ceramic films without deformations and cracks. The composition and properties of films were investigated.

    Notizen: Abstract Silica coating films with various surface morphologies, such as flat, porous (with deep pores), concave-convex (with hills and valleys), and convex (with hills on flat plane) structure were prepared from a mixture of two kinds of sols derived from polymerized tetraethoxy-silane (TEOS) and methyltriethoxysilane (MTES). Different surface morphologies were obtained by varying the molar ratio r = MTES/TEOS of the coating solution. The surface was flat for r less than 2.5, porous for 2.5 ≤ r 〈 5, concave-convex for 5 ≤ r 〈 7.5, convex for 7.5 ≤ r 〈 13, and again flat for r larger than 13. For 2.5 ≤ r 〈 5, the apparent refractive index of the silica film with porous morphology was decreased to 1.23 by selecting the solvent and by controlling the relative humidity of the coating atmosphere and the heat treatment temperature. Coating of glass with silica films of low refractive index of 1.23 led to the low reflective glasses with visible light reflectance Rvis of less than 0.2%.

A free scapular flap was transplanted to the inguinal area and then used to release the contracture in the manner of a pedicled groin flap. The advantages of this method are that it can be utilized regardless of the condition of the recipient site, and the major vessels of the hand remain intact.

    Notizen: Abstract Spiropyran and diarylethene were doped in silica gels which were prepared from Si(OCH3)4 and Si(OC2H5)4, respectively, and their photochromic properties were compared. In the gels, both organics are incorporated with open modifications and show the photochromism between red and colourless modifications. The closed form of spiropyran, which is converted from the open one by irradiation with light, is thermally backed into the open form after the light is blocked. The activation energy of thermochemical reaction is 0.86 eV. Diarylethene shows no thermochemical reaction below 140°C, but shows a photochemically reversible change on alternate irradiation by light of 436.5 and 578 nm.

    Notizen: Abstract This study was performed to find the composition area of cubic spinel-type monophase oxides composed of the Mn–Co–Ni ternary system. Starting materials were prepared by mixing Mn, Co, and Ni nitrates then evaporating to dryness. Each starting oxide was fired at 700, 800, 900, 1000, and 1100 °C in air. The regions of cubic spinel monophase (CSM) were confirmed to spread with decreasing firing temperatures. The region of CSM at 1000 °C was seen near the line connecting the points of Mn : Co : Ni = 2 : 4 : 0 and 4.5 : 0 : 1.5. The area at 800 °C spread toward Co and Ni, as compared to the results at 1000 °C. In the region containing more Mn above the area of CSM at 800 °C, the phase had tetragonal spinel or α-Mn2O3 besides cubic spinel structure. Below this area, the phase contained rock-salt-type crystal besides cubic spinel structure. This tendency at 1000 °C was the same as that at 800 °C.
