Notes: [Auszug] The mechanical properties of fresh human erythrocytes at 25 C were investigated with a Ferranti-Shirley cone and plate viscometer having a water-cooled plate and a torsion head which measured the applied shear stress. This device subjected 0.6 ml. of a dilute erythrocyte suspension (approximately ...

Notes: Summary A preliminary study of a wide range of copper-chrome-arsenic formulations indicates that the most offective are in the region, CuSO4·5H2O-35 to 45 per cent; K2Cr2O7-40 per cent and above; As2O5·2H2O-25 to 15 per cent or less. Effectiveness appears to depend more on the copper content than the copper-arsenic. Observations on selective absorption and leaching suggest that the chromium fixes the arsenic preferentially to the copper. Although there appears to be no major amount of fixation of copper by arsenic, at the start of addition of arsenic to copper-chrome formulations there is a small but significant decrease in the leaching of the copper suggesting either a small amount of fixation of copper by arsenic or the formation of an insoluble complex of all three components. Maximum fixation of arsenic was obtained when the Cr/As ratio (as salts) was 1.9 or greater. Maximum fixation of copper is not so simply defined but is round about a Cr/Cu ratio (as salts) of 1.7. The area of maximum effectiveness is not coincident with the area of maximum fixation of both copper and arsenic but slightly displaced towards a region of higher copper where there is still maximum fixation of arsenic but some loss of copper.

Notes: Summary A novel ultrasonic device is presented which generates controlled hydrodynamic shear forces in small volumes of liquid. This device has been used to measure the mechanical fragilities of human blood cells under a variety of experimental conditions. A value of 1–2.000 dynes cm−2 has been obtained for the critical shear stress required to disrupt the weaker erythrocytes in saline. Shear stresses of this order cause sub-lethal damage to surviving cells, which significantly reduces theirin vivo andin vitro life span.

Notes: Summary An extension of geometric programming to handle rational functions of posynomials is presented. The solution technique consists of successive approximations of posynomials and solution of ordinary geometric programs. An example of a multistage heat exchanger system optimization illustrates the computational method.

Notes: Summary Relatively pure mitochondrial-free Sarcoplasmic reticulum (SR) was isolated from crab and cockroach skeletal muscle, and the SR calcium uptake was studied in control and insecticide-treated conditions by incubation in Ca45 media followed by millipore filtration and counting by liquid scintillation methods. All insecticides used (parathion, DDT, γBHC and tri-cresyl phosphate) at 1 mM concentrations caused a slight fall in the intrinsic Ca2+ content of the SR, but this Ca2+ loss was insufficient to explain the contracture induction effect of these agents. All insecticides used (at 1 mM) caused a massive inhibition of SR Ca2+ uptake, and all were able to release Ca2+ previously bound to the SR during incubation in the presence of ATP. It is concluded that the contracture-induction effect of these insecticides is due to their inhibition of SR Ca2+ uptake, resulting in a massive rise in myoplasmic free Ca2+.
