Notes: The RNA components of two isolates of BaYMV from Streatley and Wiltshire were analysed by agarose gel electrophoresis. Northern blots of extracts of both isolates analysed with random-primed cDNA probes to RNA1 and 2 of the Streatley isolate showed little or no sequence homologies between the two isolates, confirming other evidence that they should be considered as different viruses.

Notes: We report the successful application of an optically pumped molecular beam laser for efficient and selective population transfer from v″=0 to high lying vibrational levels of Na2 in the electronic ground state. More than 50% of the molecules in a thermally populated rotational level of v″=0 can be transferred to a state v″(very-much-greater-than)1 with typically ≥75% of the molecules excited out of the initial state found in the predetermined end vibrational level and approximately ≤25% distributed over other levels according to the Franck–Condon factors. The applicability of this technique to the study of collision processes involving vibrationally highly excited levels is discussed. This work also contributes in general to a better understanding of optically pumped dimer lasers.

Notes: Seventy-one patients scheduled to undergo upper or lower abdominal surgical procedures were allocated at random to one of seven treatment groups: in the recovery room they were to receive oxygen via a 40% Ventimask with 10 litres/minute oxygen flow, or via either a Hudson mask or a nasal cannula with 3,6 or 9 litres/minute oxygen flow. The 40% Ventimask gave the most consistent, satisfactory postoperative values of PaO2 but the much cheaper nasal cannula at 6 or 9 litres/minute was generally adequate in conscious patients. The performance of the intermediately priced Hudson mask was similar to that of the nasal cannula at these flows. The unconscious state was associated with a 45% lower PaO2 than the rousable or awake states. Differences between the treatments with regard to postoperative PaCO2 were small and non-significant. The nasal cannula with 6 litres, minute humidified oxygen flow is recommended for routine treatment, and the Ventimask for unconscious patients.

Notes: Modification of an amalgam alloy may give rise to improved physical properties. The physical properties of a newly formulated, single-composition lathe-cut amalgam alloy were studied and found to be superior to those of a conventional lathe-cut amalgam alloy. However, such modification in formulation may result in changes in the clinical handling properties of the material. The high-copper amalgam alloy was assessed by a panel of general practitioners who found that the general handling properties of the material were similar to those of conventional lathe-cut amalgam alloys. The longer term performance of the high-copper alloy was assessed by means of a blind, controlled clinical trial carried out by two operators. A 1-year assessment of the resulting restorations and tooth replicas could not distinguish between the high-copper alloy and a conventional alloy. The two alloys had both given good clinical results.

Notes: J. T. Hooker argues that at Il. 24.649 ⋯πικερτομ⋯ων must mean ‘taunting’ and, since ‘taunting’ makes no sense, that ⋯πικερτομ⋯ων must have entered our Iliad at this point from a version of the Iliad slightly different from ours in which it did make sense. I wish to argue that ⋯πικερτομ⋯ων has a meaning different from ‘taunting’, which makes good sense of this, and every other, context.

Notes: Social history, and urban history in particular, has become increasingly concerned, in recent years, with studying the middle class. Historians have progressed from a concern with the ‘success’ or ‘rise’ of the middle classes, to a study them per se both in quantitative and qualitative terms: questions concerning their wealth, consumption patterns, residential preferences, representation within the political leadership as well as their beliefs, values and role in attention. Urban historians have a particular interest in the study of the local middle class, in a way that takes into account the finer detail of different kinds of urban environment and the complexities of the urban experience. Since much of urban history has been at pains to discover the variety of patterns in urban development and urban society, it is not surprising that recent specialized studies of individual towns and cities have revealed a great variety in the bases of class relations. Indeed, the traditional Marxist notion of a single national class interest is now open to qualification. The disparity between London and the provinces in respect of class interests has long been recognized. An extension of the proposition inherent in that disparity will contend here that there were different types of middle class located in different types of urban environment. Such a proposition is not in itself pathfinding or particularly new. There are problems, however, in deciding in what ways such a differentiated pattern can be drawn out, examined and presented in coherent form.

Notes: The parasite faunas of 12 species of freshwater fish from 17 localities on the island of Jersey were examined. Comparison of the species composition, number, diversity and equitability of the parasite fauna of each species of fish in each locality revealed that community diversity was always low, that most communities were dominated by a single species of parasite, and that community similarity between host species, and often between sites, was generally low. This was not related to unavailability or distribution of potential, invertebrate, intermediate host species, but appeared to be due to chance colonization events. With two exceptions, little exchange of parasites took place between host species, despite vacant niches in the parasite communities and the absence of competitors, and normal parasite specificity was maintained. Comparison of the parasite communities with those on other oceanic islands suggests that they are poorer than would be predicted by island biogeographical theory, and that this is not a very good predictor of parasite community richness on oceanic islands.
