Notes: Abstract We study the multiscaling in the fluctuations of multiparticle distributions at small scales. Similarly to the multiscaling effect, recently found in multifractal models, we analyse the dependence of the strength of the fluctuations on the low density cut-off in the cascade. The effect changes the scaling behaviour and leads to stronger dependence of the scaled factorial moments on the resolution than the power law. This could be an explanation of the behaviour observed recently in the experimental 3-dimensional data on the scaled factorial moments. The multiscaling analysis allows to restore the universality in the processes with different cut-offs and could be used in the analysis of the experimental data.

Notes: Abstract The finite-size scalling analysis of the scaled factorial moment data is proposed. This analysis allows to extract the scaling indices of the underlying higher-dimensional scale-invariant multiparticle distributions. Moreover, it exhibits the change of the effective scale involved in the dimensional projection with transverse momentum cuts applied to the data.

Notes: Abstract The gel filtration technique was used for the fractionation of middle molecular substances (MMS) in plasma from conservatively treated patients, from dialysed patients with renal failure and in the ultradiafiltrate from dialysed ones. The following observations were made: 1. MMS accumulate in the plasma of conservatively treated patients in chronic renal failure. 2. The accumulation of MMS in dialysed patients is even higher. 3. The elimination of the most important MMS in the ultradiafiltrate is excellent. 4. It is concluded that hemofiltration and ultradiafiltration are indicated also for the removal of MMS, namely in the case of clinical complications which cause a further accumulation of MMS.

Description / Table of Contents: Summary Non-fluorescent compounds are formed by the interaction of free fatty acids (FFS) and uranin, whereby the extent of the decolorization of the uranin solution forms the basis of a determination of fatty acids. The determination of the FFS was conducted spectrophotometrically at 500 nm. Uranin shows a sharp absorption band at this wave length. The results of the determination of FFS C12–C20 show that (in the concentration range from 0.6–1.8 milliequivalent/liter) on the basis of the similar course of the absorption curves of the fatty acids, it is feasible to use palmitic acid as standard preparation in the determination of the FFS. In addition, palmitic acid was determined in the presence of triglycerides, sphingomyelines, cerebrosides and cholesterin. The presence of the compounds cited has no essential influence on the determination of the palmitic acid. This method cannot be used for the direct determination of FFS in blood serum, because lactic acid decolorizes the uranin solution.

Notes: Abstract YBa2Cu3O6 is known to be an antiferromagnetic insulator with high Neel temperature (TN≈400≈500 K). The nuclear spin-lattice relaxation rate 1/T1 due to two-magnon scattering is calculated, using values of ecchange integrals and anisotropy gap published in literature. We found approximately quadratic dependence of relaxation rate 1/T1 on temperature for temperatures above 100 K. The value of 1/T1, determined by low-energy magnons, is found to be inversely proportional to magnitude of gap in magnon spectrum.

Notes: Summary Determination of serotonin (5-hydroxytryptamine, 5-HT) and its main metabolite, 5-hydroxyindolacetic acid (5-HIAA), became important in clinical chemistry. Commercially available and newly synthetised bonded-phase materials were evaluated in the off-line clean-up procedure of urine samples prior to the determination of 5-HIAA by high-performance liquid chromatography using electrochemical detection. From the point of reproducibility and recovery the best results were obtained employing our newly synthetised material consisting of silica gel support with wide pore diameter (≥20 nm) and large pore volume (≥2.5 cm3 g−1) with a mean (B.E.T.) surface area of 196m2 g−1. It has been modified by mixed chemically bonded C16−C18 phase. The achieved surface carbon coverage was 14.7% C.
