    Notizen: Summary Benzisoxazole-3-acetic acid, a new synthetic growth regulator, was administered to protoplast cultures from Nicotiana tabacum and subsequently to the developed microcalluses, to test its activity on plant regeneration from protoplasts in different culture conditions. Such activity, compared to that of naphthalene-acetic acid, proved to be rather low in the stage of cellular division and microcallus formation but particulary high in the stage of shoot induction from microcallus, thus confirming that the activity of this compound is mainly morphogenetic.

    Notizen: Abstract We tested the morphogenetic and cell elongating activity of 1,2-benzisoxazole-3-one, a compound similar to 1,2-benzisoxazole-3-acetic acid but lacking the lateral carbon chain. For comparison, we tested also the activity of indole 2,3-dione, having the same indolic ring as indole 3-acetic acid but no lateral carbon chain. The tests were made on the regeneration of tomato (Lycopersicon esculentum Miller var. Alice) from cotyledons and on pea (Pisum sativum L. var. Alaska) stem elongation. We found that 1,2 benzisoxazole-3-one retains part of the high shoot inducing activity of 1,2-benzisoxazole-3-aceticacid, while indole-2,3-dione is inactive. Both compounds have no effect on root induction or cell elongation. It seems therefore that the activity of 1,2 benzisoxazole-3-acetic acid is partly related to the structure of its ring, and that also in this respect 1,2 benzisoxazole-3-acetic acid differs from other auxinlike compounds.

    Notizen: Summary Tomato cotyledon explants, cultured in vitro in the presence of sucrose, were subjected to different hormonal treatments to establish whether the induction of different organogenic programmes could be correlated with differences in starch accumulation and protein electrophoretic pattern. The cytohistological changes in explants over the first 15 days of culture were studied by light and electron microscopy. It was found that starch accumulation occurs under all conditions, though varying in duration and amount. Over the first 2 days of culture the protein electrophoretic pattern changes in a similar way under all conditions, while after 7 days changes take place which are probably related to the different developmental programmes induced by the treatments.

    Notizen: Abstract Leek plants (Allium porrum L.), infected or not with the arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) fungus, Glomus mosseae, were grown in a sand-hydroponic system, fed with a nutrient solution containing 3.2 or 96 μM P and analyzed for root IAA and ZR content, to assess the role played by the fungus and P nutrition on host hormonal balance. IAA was analyzed by HPLC-fluorimetry, ZR by HPLC-UV coupled with a bioassay based on the expression of a phytohormone-regulated GUS reporter gene. Shoot and root weights and shoot FW-DW ratio enhancements, as well as root-to-shoot DW ratio decrement in mycorrhizal plants, were related to P nutrition. Shoot P concentration was increased by mycorrhizae at both P levels, but was comparable in AM plants grown at 3.2 μM P and non mycorrhizal (NM) plants at 96 μM P. Mycorrhizae and P increased IAA at substantially similar values, while P increased ZR much more than mycorrhizae did. These results are discussed in relation to root architecture modifications induced by the AM fungus.

    Notizen: Abstract To get some insight into the hydration mechanisms of homologousdisaccharides, we report measurements on trehalose, maltose, and sucroseaqueous solutions. The interest on these systems is mainly due to theextraordinary properties of disaccharides and especially of trehalose, themost effective bio-protector against freezing and dehydration. To carry outthis study we have investigated the volumetric properties of the threedisaccharide solutions, by performing density and ultrasonic velocitymeasurements at different concentration and temperature values. Whatemerges from these studies is that trehalose shows, in comparison withmaltose and sucrose, the greatest structural sensitivity to temperaturechanges and the smallest values of the partial molar volume in all theinvestigated temperature range, this circumstance being indicative of a morepacked conformational arrangement.
