Notes: [Auszug] THE tissue culture of human lymphocytes separated from peripheral blood has become widely used to investigate the responses of lymphocytes to antigens in vitro. This technique provides a possible method for investigating the immunological status of the lymphocyte donor. The lymphocytes obtained ...

Notes: Summary The seed of peach fruits develop the capacity to produce ethylene with a lag phase of about 1 h after excision. The site of ethylene synthesis is in the seed coat and rates as high as 6,000 μl kg−1 h−1 were recorded. Ethylene production was reduced to less than 1% of the control by 10 μg/ml cycloheximide. Although the tissue had only a small methionine pool, supplying the seed with exogenous methionine did not influence ethylene production at any stage of seed development. Label from [U-14C]methionine was readily incorporated into ethylene.

Notes: Summary Electrophysiological investigations in a patient with progressive autonomic failure revealed selective damage to the somatic efferent innervation of the external urinary sphincter musculature, implying selective vulnerability of the motoneurons of Onuf's nucleus in the sacral cord. This vulnerability contrasts with the selective resistance of these motoneurons to degeneration in motor neuron disease.

Notes: Summary The sink strength of one of a pair of competing peach fruits was increased when the fruit was treated with (2-chloroethyl)phosphonic acid (Ethephon) and gibberellic acid. Ethephon increased the capacity of the treated fruit to attract 14C-labelled assimilates at most stages of fruit development and was most effective when the level of endogenous ethylene produced by the fruit was lowest. The results are discussed in relation to the hypothesis that ethylene participates in the control of sink strength of the fruit and of other competing organs of the tree.

Notes: Abstract Rare-metals mineralization at Brockman, Western Australia, is the product of early pyroclastic eruption of trachytic magma enriched in volatiles and incompatible elements such as Zr, Hf, Nb, Ta, Be, Y and REE and Ga. The mineralization is fine-grained (〈20 μm) and is the result of alteration and re-mobilization of comparatively simple magmatic precursor minerals such as columbite and zircon by F-rich deuteric solutions that were retained in an ash-flow tuff (the Niobium Tuff) following eruption. Chondrite normalized REE distributions show strong enrichment in HREE. Gel-zircon is the principal residence of the HREE, disseminated bastnaesite (±parisite and synchisite) carries the LREE and bertrandite, in late-stage calcite veins, is the host for Be. Ga occurs in K-mica in the groundmass. Trachytic flows overlying the Niobium Tuff contain many of the same ore minerals, but in trace amounts.

Notes: Abstract Omeprazole (20mg od/b.d.), clarithromycin (250mg b.d.) and tinidazole (500mg b.d. for 7 days) [OCT] is an effective regimen againstHelicobacter pylori. However, treatment fails in 5%–10% of patients and the reasons for this are not clear. We investigated patient factors that independently predicted failure of this regimen.H. pylori-positive patients were prescribed OCT and the success of treatment was evaluated by the13C-urea breath test at least 4 weeks after completion of therapy. Patients were prospectively interviewed on past medical history of peptic ulcer and H2-receptor antagonist (H2RA) pre-treatment, smoking history, and alcohol intake. Data were also collected on age, gender, and endoscopic diagnosis to determine factors predicting failure of OCT.H. pylori eradication was achieved in 238 of 273 patients [87%–95% confidence intervals (CI), 83%–91%]. Age, alcohol intake, past medical history of peptic ulcer and peptic ulcer at endoscopy were not independently associated with treatment failure.H. pylori eradication with OCT was less successful in women (P=0.02), in patients who had received H2RA pre-treatment (P=0.02), and in smokers (P=0.02) when evaluated by multiple logistic regression. These findings indicate that OCT is less effective in smokers and in patients who receive H2RA pre-treatment suggesting that these agents should be avoided, if possible, before the patient commences therapy.H. pylori eradication was less successful in women; this result needs further evaluation.
