    Notes: The linear theory of the resistive tearing mode instability in slab geometry, has been recently extended by introducing the effect of equilibrium shear flow and viscosity [Phys. Fluids 29, 2563 (1986); Phys. Fluids B 1, 2224 (1989); ibid. 2, 495 (1990); ibid. 2, 2575 (1990)]. In the present analysis, numerical solutions of the time-dependent resistive equations are generalized to this problem and growth rate scaling is obtained. The results of the computations are compared to previous work, and the computed growth rate scalings agree with analytical predictions. Namely, the "constant-ψ'' growth rate scales as S−1/2 and the "nonconstant-ψ'' growth rate scales as S−1/3, where S is the magnetic Reynolds number. The Furth–Killeen–Rosenbluth (FKR) scaling of S−3/5 is reproduced for small values of shear flow. The presence of flow introduces a new peak in the eigenfunction, which is outside of the peak that occurs in the case without flow. The introduction of viscosity and small shear alters the growth rate scaling to S−2/3(Sv/S)1/6 where Sv is the ratio of the viscous time to the Alfvén time. When the shear flow is large, the growth rate behaves in a more complex way, and Kelvin–Helmholtz instability effects are present.

    Notes: 1. In the present study, we investigated the effects of blood volume on postischaemic function and efficiency. In 14 anaesthetized dogs, following recovery from a period of 15 min occlusion of the left anterior descending coronary artery, the effects of hypervolaemia (HYPER; 15% increased volume produced by fast infusion of Hespan; B Braun Medical, Irvine, CA, USA), normovolaemia (NORMO) and hypovolaemia (HYPO) were studied.2. Although myocardial O2 consumption was not significantly increased by volume (6.37±0.94 vs 6.89±1.1 mL/min per 100 g for HYPO and HYPER, respectively), local work of the stunned myocardium was markedly elevated (8.8±1.7 vs 22.5±3.5 g·mm/ beat, for HYPO and HYPER, respectively; P 〈 0.05). External work of the heart was also significantly improved (71.8±12.7 vs 139.5±16.2 mmHg·L/min for HYPO and HYPER, respectively). These data indicate markedly improved efficiency produced by volume, because work was increased with no change in myocardial O2 consumption.3. Local dysfunction was characterized by several parameters, including systolic bulge, end-diastolic length, delay to onset of shortening, end shortening time delay (EST) and tail work ratio. Hypervolaemia reduced EST compared with hypovolaemia (98.6±18.3 vs 110.7±14.9 msec, respectively; P 〈 0.05) and improved tail work ratio (28.0±7.0 vs 36.0±7.0%, respectively; P 〈 0.05), with no effects on systolic bulge, end-diastolic length and delay to onset of shortening.4. Thus, even in the postischaemic myocardium, increasing work by volume is energetically efficient and is accompanied by partial improvement of local dysfunction.

    Notes: Abstract 57Co was produced with high pure nature iron irradiated by 8.5MeV deuterons. TBP-benzene extraction method and anion-exchange method were used to separate and purify it. The purified57Co was prepared into standard solution of about 30 to 50 μg Co2+/ml carrier concentration and about 0.1 mol/l HCl. The specific activity of the standard solution was measured with 4 π β (ppc)-γ coincidence counting method. The final result was 476.82(1±0.42%)Bq/mg.
