Notes: Abstract A computer model useful in predicting the cyclic oxidation behavior of alloys is presented. The model considers the oxygen uptake due to scale formation during the heating cycle and the loss of oxide due to spalling during the cooling cycle. The balance between scale formation and scale loss is modeled and used to predict weight change and metal loss kinetics. A simple uniform spalling model is compared to a more complex random spall site model. In nearly all cases, the simpler uniform spall model gave predictions as accurate as the more complex model. The model has been applied to several nickel-base alloys which, depending upon composition, form Al2O3 or Cr2O3 during oxidation. The model has been validated by several experimental approaches. Versions of the model that run on a personal computer are available.

Notes: Abstract We analyzed 814 cases of meningococcal disease notified in 1987 and 1988 to the Ministry of Health. Data were obtained by report forms including informations about possible additional cases among contacts. Coprimary cases (occurring within 24 hours after the index case) and secondary cases (occurring more than 24 hours after index case) were all reviewed. Twenty eight clusters of meningococcal disease were identified involving 65 cases (8% of total cases). Twelve of the 814 cases (1.5%) were coprimary cases of an index case and 25 (3%) were secondary cases. The secondary attack rate was 530/100,000 among household contacts and 31/100,000 among school contacts. Seventy two per cent of the secondary cases occurred in the first week after index case. Thirty-eight percent of the secondary cases occurred in the 15–20 age group as opposed to 15% of single cases. Serogroup A was more often found in coprimary (33%) and secondary cases (17%) than in single cases (6%). In France, prophylaxis of secondary cases is administered to the classroom contacts of a case of meningococcal infection but is not required for the entire school except under epidemic conditions.

Notes: Summary The metal indicators Calcon and Calcein are introduced into histochemical technology and their specifity for the demonstration of calcium is discussed. A high specifity of histochemical demonstration of calcium in skeleton is possible by means of Calcein and Murexide which has been known in histology for some time. This high specifity in using Calcein and Murexide is obtained by adding KCN to a 0.1 N NaOH or KOH solution and by pretreatment with Na2CO3. Calcon, however, only stains material containing calcium in glycin buffer (pH 12.4 or 9). The specifity is lower but it is possible to obtain a double — coloured demonstration: calcium structures in skeleton show red against an underground (including cells and nuclei) in blue. In comparison to Murexide a counterstain for the demonstration of cells is not absolutely necessary. For the intracellular demonstration of calcium the abovementioned methods are applicable though not very efficient.

Notes: Abstract Until now, the need for wide exposure and nonmanipulative dissection of pheochromocytoma has dictated the use of a large intraperitoneal transabdominal approach, which unfortunately results in a significant incidence of morbidity. A unilateral retroperitoneal approach guided by the refinements of new imaging techniques is less invasive but is associated with a small risk of incomplete cure. In one case report, we tested the hypothesis that laparoscopic surgery could combine the beneficial effects of both operative strategies without their respective side effects. We concluded that a laparoscopic approach combined with exclusive intraoperative infusion of nicardipine, a calcium-channel blocker, can be used to surgically remove pheochromocytoma under stable hemodynamic conditions. This provides better exposure of the anatomical structures than open surgery and allows a visual exploration of the entire abdominal cavity to exclude tumor multicentricity or ectopic sites in the case of inconclusive preoperative imaging investigations. Moreover, conversion to open surgery is always possible if needed.
