    Notes: Abstract We studied periventricular/intraventricular type intracranial hemorrhage (ICH) by cranial ultrasonography in 82 low-birth-weight (LBW) newborn infants with admission hypothermia against the gestational-age-matched 82 normothermic neonates. The incidence of ICH was higher in the hypothermic infants during the 1st week of life (34/82 vs 20/82, P〈0.02). Although the distribution of individual grades of ICH was not significantly different between the groups, the first ultrasound scan showed higher incidence of major ICH (grades 3 and 4) in the hypothermic infants. Most of the minor ICH (grades 1 and 2) after the first ultrasound appeared in infants who were small for their gestational age. Our data do not support the contention that admission hypothermia can precipitate the development of IVH in LBW infants. However, the detection of admission hypothermia in a LBW neonate should make one suspect the possibility of ICH and regard it as a manifestation of the severity of ICH rather than the cause. Most likely, this close relationship between hypothermia and neonatal ICH originates from perinatal asphyxia and the cumulative adverse effects of asphyxia-related events.

    Notes: Abstract Crosstalks of two-waveguide and three-waveguide directional couplers are analyzed mathematically based on the relationship between the coupled mode and the normal mode. Numerical techniques such as the finite-difference method and the beam propagation method are employed to confirm the validity of the derived expressions. The calculation results show that two-waveguide directional coupler is superior to any type of three-waveguide couplers from the practical viewpoint of the crosstalk and the coupling length.

    Notes: This paper is concerned with the exposition of finite element applications to combustion problems. The subject of computational fluid dynamics, including combustion calculations, has long been dominated by finite differences. Recently, however, the finite element method has emerged as a potential candidate for computational modelling in fluid mechanics. It is well known that reactive fluids with combustion present additional complications because of disparity in reaction rates commonly referred to as ‘stiff’. The present paper reviews basic questions arising from combustion problems in applications of finite element techniques to the solution of problems associated with chemical kinetics, diffusion, waves, convection, etc. Finally, an example of a hydrogen-oxygen reaction is presented for practical applications. Extension to the finite element modelling of turbulence, sprays, boundary layers, shock waves, etc. in combustion must await significant developments of numerical strategies associated with a more complete understanding of physical phenomena and chemical kinetics.

    Notes: An improved pressure-based method has been applied to predict the two-dimensional instability analysis of liquid-fuelled rocket engines. This method is non-iterative for transient flow calculations and applicable to all-speed flows. Validation cases include the shock-tube problem, the blast flow field and unsteady spraycombusting flows. Computations for the combustion instability analysis were carried out for various combustion parameters such as spray initial conditions and combustor geometries. Unsteady behaviours of the stable and unstable spray flame fields and effects of acoustic oscillations on the fuel droplet vaporization and combustion process are studied in detail. The present numerical model successfully demonstrates the capability of predicting combustion instability as well as fast transient compressible flows at all speeds.
