Notes:
Summary The variation in the thickness of the bones of the cranial vault is investigated in 75 male and 90 female cadavers from the department of legal medicine of Cologne university. It can be shown that a weak rectlinear correlation between the thickness of neuro-cranial bones and age is only given for the os frontale in female individuals. The factor “ age” only participates with 5% in the total variation of the thickness of the os frontale. No correlation between thickness and age could be derived for the os occipitale in females. Considering the mean thickness of the whole cranial vault from 10 measurements does not give a stronger correlation to age and therefore no further advantage for determination of age. Thickness of the cranial vault in males does not show any correlation to age at all. Because of the weak correlation between the thickness of the os frontale and age in females it is not possible to estimate individual age from calvarial bone-thickness within usefull limits. An exception from this statement must be made for cases of Hyperostosis frontalis interna (Hfi). From former investigations by Henschen it can be derived that Hfl occurs with a frequency of 100:1 between females and males. In 83% of the moderate female cases and in 91% of the severe cases Hfi occurs beyond of the 60th decade. So, if Hfi is found in an unknown skull, an estimation of sex and age of the individual is possible with a high degree of confidence.
