Abstract It is shown that for fixed kinetic energy density the maximum flow rate principle previously used for determining the radius of the free surface of an incompressible fluid flowing from a centrifugal nozzle admits an equivalent formulation within the context of the Lagrangian formalism, which means that the principle can easily be extended to the case of a compressible gas. The results of the calculations are compared with experiment.
