Notes: Abstract Excess volumes V E of binary liquid mixtures of quinoline with alkanols have been determined from densities at 30°C as a function of composition. The excess volumes are negative over the whole mole fraction range for all the mixtures and decrease with increasing length of alkanol (C1−C10). The VE data have been analyzed in terms of an approach which uses graph theoretical connectivity parameters of the third degrees for two components. The analysis gives information regarding associated species in the pure state and in the mixture. It is suggested that, in the mixture state, no change occurs in the association of alkanols.

Notes: Abstract Clay from the Purmandal area of J&K State was separated into its different size fractions by the method of sedimentation and with Sharple's super centrifuge process. Dilatometric studies were performed on each clay fraction; the results obtained from the dilatation curves are discussed in detail. The results revealed that the finer fraction of clay is bentonitic in nature, whereas the other fractions are felsphatic and micaceous in nature.

Notes: Abstract The transformation of gibbsite have been studied under hydrothermal influence. Results of the X-ray diffraction analysis of the samples heated at different temperatures from 170°C to 265°C are also discussed in detail. The percentage of the boehmite phase formed, due to the transformation of the gibbsite, have been determined by comparing the intensity of the most strongest reflection of the boehmite phase with a fully transformed sample. The activation energy value calculated form X-ray diffractograms is almost comparable with the value calculated from main DTA endotherm of gibbsite.

Notes: Abstract Clay from the Nagrotta area of Jammu (J & K State, India) was calcined at various temperatures. The products were analysed by X-ray diffraction. The mode of loss of hydroxyl group from the structure with respect to temperature is discussed. The results were supplemented by differential thermal analysis. The calcined products were subjected to lime reactivity tests and the data obtained were correlated with those of the above study to investigate the pozzolanic activity at various temperatures.

Notes: Abstract There is a lot of diversity in the observations on jejunal histology between light and dissection microscopy in tropical sprue. In order to compare the light and dissection microscopic appearances, a three-dimensional model of the villous pattern was constructed after a study of 350 serial sections of jejunal biopsy from a patient with tropical sprue. There was considerable variation in the morphological appearance of the villi in different sections. The changes seen varied from mild to partial villous atrophy. Broad synechia and bridge formation between adjoining villi due to fusion was frequently observed. It is postulated that the process of fusion of villi may be partly responsible for the development of features of partial villous atrophy seen in jejunal biopsies in tropical sprue. Normal jejunal pattern reported by some workers in patients with tropical sprue could possibly be due to inadequate sampling of the total biopsy piece.

Notes: Summary Three cases of retrograde jejunogastric intussusception who were managed endoscopically are described. The diagnosis was made by means of endoscopy in one case and contrast radiology of the stomach in the other two. Endoscopic management consisted of reduction of the intussusception, followed by placement of a feeding tube deep in the intussuscepting segment. The patients responded very well and surgery could be avoided in all of them.

Notes: Summary Anomalous junction of pancreatobiliary ducts (AJPB) is known to be associated with choledochal cyst and gallbladder cancer. This report describes our experience with eight patients with AJPB, six of whom were diagnosed at endoscopic retrograde cholangiography and two at transhepatic cholangiography. Four of the patients with AJPB had an associated congenital choledochal cyst, two had a normal biliary tree and one each had inspissated bile syndrome and cholangiocarcinoma. The last two associations have not been previously described. It is felt that the clinical spectrum of AJPB may unfold further with the widespread use of the cholangiographic techniques.
