Notes: Low-temperature band-to-band photoluminescence of GaAs and AlGaAs excited by the 514.5 nm line of an argon ion laser beam was used as a probe to measure the temperature at the focused laser spot. A combined study of the dependence of band-gap energy on increasing laser power density and temperature was undertaken. The band-gap variation with temperature has been correlated with laser induced temperature at the focused laser spot as a function of laser power density. The induced temperature is lower than anticipated from the theories for cw laser heating. This disagreement can be explained by the contribution of photoexcited carriers to the thermal conductivity, which is not considered by theories available for laser heating in semiconductors. © 1994 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: The effects of hydrogenation on GaAlAs layer grown by molecular beam epitaxy stored over a long period of time was investigated using photoluminescence (PL) measurement. Upon hydrogenation, the defects in the GaAlAs are passivated and the PL intensity increased many times. Hydrogenation changes the energy of the defect produced on storage of GaAlAs and new features appear in excitonic emissions. On annealing the hydrogenated GaAlAs at temperatures (approximately-greater-than)500 °C, the defects are depassivated and the PL intensity degraded. Hydrogenation improves the PL intensity of emission from a stack of GaAs/GaAlAs quantum wells (QW) of different well widths by a factor which varies with the depth of the QW from the surface. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: The cultivated soybean, Glycine max (L.) Merr., was crossed with its proposed wild progenitor, Glycine sofa (Seib. & Zucc.), to create useful genetic variability. A few plants with increased frequency of four-seeded pods were identified in a segregating generation derived from this interspecific cross. One of them had about 45 percent four-seeded pods per plant, whereas Glycine max and Glycine soja accessions used as parents in this study had only 8.0 and 5.1 per cent four-seeded pods per plant, respectively. The established line finally had 32.5 per cent four-seeded pods per plant, which is substantially higher as compared to either of the parents. Obviously, the genes which are responsible for this character are not expressed in the parental population.

Notes: The free carrier concentration at oval defects in silicon-doped GaAs grown by molecular beam epitaxy has been studied on the basis of longitudinal-optical (LO)-phonon plasmon coupled mode frequency through Raman spectroscopy. The carrier concentration at the oval defects was found to be lower as compared to the defect-free regions. The variations of surface depletion width with the concentration calculated from LO phonon intensities was also used to obtain the carrier concentration at the oval defects. Excellent agreement was found between the carrier concentrations obtained from these two methods. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Micro-Raman investigations have been carried out at various spots in and around oval defects in epitaxially grown 〈100〉 GaAs wafers. Changes in the crystalline orientation have been observed within the oval defect structure as compared to the normal region. However, the crystalline quality of these defects remain equally good. These oval defects also possess a deviation in stoichiometry, corroborating to the conclusions of other studies.

Notes: Hypersensitivity reactions can occur after the administration of barium products and all caused by one of the many additives. These reactions are extremely unusual. Authors report on a patient who developed urticaria shortly after a conventional barium examination.

Notes: Summary Anomalous junction of pancreatobiliary ducts (AJPB) is known to be associated with choledochal cyst and gallbladder cancer. This report describes our experience with eight patients with AJPB, six of whom were diagnosed at endoscopic retrograde cholangiography and two at transhepatic cholangiography. Four of the patients with AJPB had an associated congenital choledochal cyst, two had a normal biliary tree and one each had inspissated bile syndrome and cholangiocarcinoma. The last two associations have not been previously described. It is felt that the clinical spectrum of AJPB may unfold further with the widespread use of the cholangiographic techniques.

Notes: Summary Three cases of retrograde jejunogastric intussusception who were managed endoscopically are described. The diagnosis was made by means of endoscopy in one case and contrast radiology of the stomach in the other two. Endoscopic management consisted of reduction of the intussusception, followed by placement of a feeding tube deep in the intussuscepting segment. The patients responded very well and surgery could be avoided in all of them.

Notes: Summary We describe a modified ultrasound-guided transgastric drainage technique for pancreatic pseudocysts. Using a water-filled stomach to improve visualization, we have successfully drained pseudocysts in ten patients. This report also describes the use of a stiffening cannula to assist transgastric catheter placement. We emphasize the value of constant real-time tracking of the dilator and guidewire to ensure correct positioning of the drainage catheter.
