Notes: The magnetic reorientation transition for ultrathin Fe films on Gd is studied. At low temperatures, the films are magnetized in plane and at intermediate temperatures they undergo a reorientation to out of plane. The reorientation is attributed to the reducing magnetization of Gd as it approaches its Curie temperature and the perpendicular magnetic anisotropy at the Fe surface. Detailed measurements of the reorientation were made in situ using the magneto-optic Kerr effect (MOKE). The first step, at low temperature, is a continuous, reversible reorientation of the surface moment from in plane to canted out of plane; a corresponding peak in the susceptibility identifies it as a second-order phase transition. The second step is a discontinuous, irreversible rotation from this canted direction to perpendicular to the film plane; thermal hysteresis of the magnetization identifies it as a first-order phase transition. The MOKE thermal hysteresis loop shows that the Gd surface region participates in the first-order phase transition. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Results from scattering experiments, using a polarized electron beam combined with polarization analysis, are presented and discussed. There is no evidence of depolarization in quasielastic scattering for the systems studied [Ni(110), Ni(110)O(2×1), paramagnetic Ni(110), Pt(111), graphite]. In inelastic scattering from graphite for small energy losses the depolarization is found to be weak, whereas for ferromagnetic Fe and Ni surfaces large spin-flip contributions have been reported for small energy losses.

Notes: A passivated uranium surface has been tested as an electron-spin analyzing target in a retarding potential Mott detector. The effective Sherman function and yield were measured for electron energies of 15–34 keV at energy-loss acceptance windows of 500 and 1000 eV. The figure of merit was found to be ≈1×10−5. The uranium target had a higher Sherman function than either gold or thorium at 20-keV and 500-eV energy loss. The passivated surface is also extremely stable, thus proving to be an acceptable target for electron-spin analysis.

Notes: An in situ study of the absolute magnetic moment of thin ferromagnetic films grown in ultrahigh vacuum (UHV) is described. The moments are measured using a newly innovated technique, rotating sample superconducting quantum interference device (SQUID) magnetometry (RSSM), in which the sample is spun at low frequency close to an ex situ second derivative superconducting pickup loop structure coupled to a rf SQUID. The sensitivity of the measurements is ≈10−6 emu, which corresponds to 1/10 of an atomic layer of Fe over a 0.5 cm2 area, and the geometry of the pickup loops makes the magnetometer very insensitive to background laboratory noise. The moment of Cr grown on Fe was measured. It was determined that the first two layers of Cr have an average moment of 0.75 μB per atom, and are antiferromagnetically aligned to the Fe film moment. The simplicity of RSSM and the fact that the absolute moment is measured makes this a powerful new approach for characterization of magnetic samples in UHV. © 1994 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: The epitaxial growth of fcc iron films on the (001) face of diamond has been achieved. The films were studied by reflection high-energy electron diffraction and angle-resolved Auger electron diffraction. The studies show that 4–5 atomic layers of Fe on C(100) form a continuous film. The films as deposited at room temperature are disordered, and after a high-temperature anneal have a fcc structure at room temperature.

Notes: The distribution of IgE in a large randomly stratified Greek population sample was determined in 1187 subjects (793 men and 394 women) aged between 20 and 60 years. Skin prick testing was performed and serum total IgE expressed in iu/ml was measured by Phadebas PRIST: the data are presented as the geometric mean. Subjects were classified as atopic (257 men, 118 women) and nonatopic (536 men, 276 women) according to the results of skin testing with various aeroallergens. At any age, atopic males (120.5 vs 38 iu/ml) and females (99.8 vs 29.3 iu/ml) had higher mean IgE levels, as compared to nonatopic subjects (P〈0.0001). In our adult nonatopic sample, IgE levels did not differ with age (P〉0.05). At any age, nonatopic males had higher (38 iu/ml) mean IgE levels than nonatopic females (29.3 iu/ml) (P〈0.05). The comparison of normal IgE values (nonatopic subjects) from this study with those reported by other investigators revealed that Greek adult males and females had higher IgE levels than populations from other nations. Our results represent the first report on reference values regarding serum total IgE in Greek adults.

Notes: Abstract As part of our fusion-product diagnostic development program, we have begun a series of experiments with 14 MeV neutrons generated in a Cockcroft-Walton accelerator. Two different detectors have been used to measure the neutron yield: a silicon SBD and a Cu foil. The energy of the emitted neutrons has been determined by using two spectrometers: the SBD and a3He proportional counter. The reaction rate is monitored, with about ±5% accuracy, by detecting the α particles from D + T →n +α. The neutron yields obtained from the Si detector and the Cu activation had associated uncertainties of about ±15% and agreed well with the predicted values from α measurements.
