    Notes: Abstract Extraction of plutonium(IV) from aqueous sulfuric and sulfuric-nitric acid into di-2-ethylhexyl phosphoric acid (HY) in the diluents n-dodecane, toluene or chloroform has been investigated. The composition of the Pu(IV) species extracted from H2SO4 was found to be PuH2Y6, which changed to Pu(NO3)H2Y5 and Pu(NO3)2H2Y4 with increasing concentration of nitrate ion in the aqueous medium. These three species can be represented as PuY2(HY2)2, Pu(NO3)Y(HY2)2 and Pu(NO3)2(HY2)2, respectively, where Y represents the anion of monomeric HY, and HY2 the anion of dimeric H2Y2. Synergism in the extraction of Pu(IV) by the addition of thenoyltrifluoroacetone (HTTA) to HY was also investigated and attributed to extraction of the additional species, Pu(TTA)Y(HY2)2 and Pu(TTA)2(HY2)2. The addition of the neutral extractant tri-n-octylphosphine oxide (TOPO) to HY did not result in synergism in the extraction of Pu(IV) from aqueous sulfuric acid. With aqueous nitric acid under similar conditions, however, synergism was observed. The possible equilibria in these systems were identified and the corresponding equilibrium constants were determined.

    Notes: Abstract Behaviour of Pu(IV) and Pu(VI) in basic media has been investigated by studying their stabilities and quantitative determination by spectrophotometry. Beer's law was found to be obeyed in the range of 1·10−3 to 5·10−3 M Pu(IV) at 485 nm peak with a molar absorption coefficient of 95M−1· cm−1 in sodium carbonate medium. In case of Pu(VI), in the same medium Beer's law was obeyed in the concentration range of 2·10−3 to 1·10−2M at 550 nm with a molar absorption coefficient of 50M−1·cm−1. Distribution ratios of Pu(IV) and Pu(VI) for their sorption on Al2O3 and Amberlyst A-26 (MP) resin from bicarbonate and carbonate media have been determined. High distribution ratios obtained indicate the feasibility of decreasing the plutonium content of basic carbonate streams in reprocessing. 10% breakthrough capacities for Pu(IV) and Pu(VI) with these exchangers during column operations have also been determined.

    Notes: Abstract The extraction of Pu(IV) from oxalic acid-nitric acid mixtures has been investigated using a liquid anion exchanger, Aliquat-336, in xylene. The presence of oxalic acid is known to have adverse effects on the extraction of Pu(IV) by Aliquat-336. The use of cations, Al(III), Fe(III) or Zr(IV) was explored to overcome the effect of oxalic acid on Pu(IV) extraction. The data obtained reveal that Pu(IV) is quantitatively extracted by Aliquat-336, even in the presence of oxalic acid, when Al(III), Fe(III) or Zr(IV) is added. The extracted Pu(IV) can be back-extracted using aqueous ammonium carbonate.

    Notes: Abstract Current status on the chemical aspects of nuclear fuel reprocessing is presented with special emphasis on the Purex process which continues to be the process of choice for the last four decades. Better decontamination from fission products, new methods for uraniumplutonium partitioning and removal of actinides from high active waste are challenging areas in process chemistry. The development work on TRUEX and DIAMEX process for treating high active waste is briefly described. An overview of pyrochemical processes, which are important for Integral Fast Reactor Concept, is presented.

    Notes: Abstract The extraction of thorium by benzene solutions of HIPT in presence of different neutral extractants (S) was studied using perchloric, hydrochloric and sulphuric acids as aqueous media. With TBP as the donor the effect of the diluents CCl4, benzene and CHCl3 on the extraction was studied. The synergism observed was attributed to the formation of the extractable adduct Th(IPT)4 · S and, in some cases, to the extraction of additional mixed adducts involving the participation of the anion of the aqueous medium used for extraction. The adduct formation constants for the formation of Th(IPT)4 ·S were evaluated and the formation of this adduct was independently confirmed by spectrophotometric measurements. The aqueous complexing of thorium by IPT was investigated spectrophotometrically as these data were required for the quantitative interpretation of the extraction data.

    Notes: Abstract The extraction of U(VI) by mixtures of HTTA and TBP from aqueous thiocyanate medium has been studied. From the data obtained it was observed that the predominant uranium species extracted, causing synergic enhancement in the extraction of U(VI), is UO2(SCN)TTA · 2TBP when benzene and cyclohexane are used as diluents, and that at a very low concentration of TBP the contribution of additional species, viz. UO2(TTA)2 · TBP becomes significant. With chloroform as diluent, however, both of these species are contributing to the synergic enhancement. The extraction of a quaternary uranium species, UO2(SCN)TTA · 2TBP, involving the participation of the aqueous anion is thus established. Equilibrium constants for the various extraction equilibria involved are calculated.

    Notes: Abstract Fluoride and sulphate complexing of Np(VI) has been studied by controlled-potential coulometry at a constant ionic strength. The values of β 1 * and β 2 * for fluoride complexes were found to be 9.4 and 8.9, respectively, at an ionic strength μ=0.5. At an ionic strength μ=1.0, β 1 * and β 2 * obtained were 6.6 and 10.5, respectively. Sulphate complexing of Np(VI) was studied only at an ionic strength μ=0.5. The value of β 1 * obtained was 5.6.

    Notes: Abstract Fluoride complexing of Np(V) has been studied using fluoride ion selective electrode (F-ISE). Free fluoride ion concentrations in the presence of Np(V) were measured at 0.1 and 1.0M ionic strength. The data were used to calculate the stability constant of the fluoride complex of Np(V) and the values obtained are reported here.

    Notes: Abstract Extraction studies have been carried out to explore the feasibility of separation of Pu(IV) from phosphate containing analytical wastes generated in the laboratory. Distribution data on the extraction of Pu(IV) from DBDECMP (di-butyl, N,N-diethylcarbamoyl methyl phosphonate) in xylene from an aqueous nitric acid and its mixture with sulfuric as well as with sulfuric and phosphoric acids were obtained. Based on the data obtained, the conditions for the recovery of plutonium from such waste solutions are suggested.
