    Notes: Summary Biochemical parameters in 75 normal healthy male subjects exposed to intense noise of 88–107 dB(A) (6–8 h/day) for 10 to 15 years during their work situation have been monitored and compared with 35 normal unexposed subjects. Levels of free cholesterol (P〈0.001), γ-globulin (P〈0.01) and cortisol (P〈0.01) were found to be significantly higher in the exposed subjects. Significant changes in free cholesterol also altered the ratio of free to esterified cholesterol significantly (P〈0.001). The value of the A/G ratio was also lower in the exposed group. Uric acid did not show any change. The study shows that in the exposed group the esterification process of cholesterol was modified. There was an effect on pituitary-adrenal axis as well as host-defence mechanism.

    Notes: Abstract  Exposure to high altitude causes loss of body mass and alterations in metabolic processes, especially carbohydrate and protein metabolism. The present study was conducted to elucidate the role of glutamine synthetase, glutaminase and glycogen synthetase under conditions of chronic intermittent hypoxia. Four groups, each consisting of 12 male albino rats (Wistar strain), were exposed to a simulated altitude of 7620 m in a hypobaric chamber for 6 h per day for 1, 7, 14 and 21 days, respectively. Blood haemoglobin, blood glucose, protein levels in the liver, muscle and plasma, glycogen content, and glutaminase, glutamine synthetase and glycogen synthetase activities in liver and muscle were determined in all groups of exposed and in a group of unexposed animals. Food intake and changes in body mass were also monitored. There was a significant reduction in body mass (28–30%) in hypoxia-exposed groups as compared to controls, with a corresponding decrease in food intake. There was rise in blood haemoglobin and plasma protein in response to acclimatisation. Over a three-fold increase in liver glycogen content was observed following 1 day of hypoxic exposure (4.76±0.78 mg·g−1 wet tissue in normal unexposed rats; 15.82±2.30 mg·g−1 wet tissue in rats exposed to hypoxia for 1 day). This returned to normal in later stages of exposure. However, there was no change in glycogen synthetase activity except for a decrease in the 21-days hypoxia-exposed group. There was a slight increase in muscle glycogen content in the 1-day exposed group which declined significantly by 56.5, 50.6 and 42% following 7, 14, and 21 days of exposure, respectively. Muscle glycogen synthetase activity was also decreased following 21 days of exposure. There was an increase in glutaminase activity in the liver and muscle in the 7-, 14- and 21-day exposed groups. Glutamine synthetase activity was higher in the liver in 7- and 14-day exposed groups; this returned to normal following 21 days of exposure. Glutamine synthetase activity in muscle was significantly higher in the 14-day exposed group (4.32 µmol γ-glutamyl hydroxamate formed·g protein−1·min−1) in comparison to normal (1.53 µmol γ-glutamyl hydroxamate formed·g protein−1·min−1); this parameter had decreased by 40% following 21 days of exposure. These results suggest that since no dramatic changes in the levels of protein were observed in the muscle and liver, there is an alteration in glutaminase and glutamine synthetase activity in order to maintain nitrogen metabolism in the initial phase of hypoxic exposure.

    Notes: Abstract Extraction studies have been carried out to explore the feasibility of separation of Pu(IV) from phosphate containing analytical wastes generated in the laboratory. Distribution data on the extraction of Pu(IV) from DBDECMP (di-butyl, N,N-diethylcarbamoyl methyl phosphonate) in xylene from an aqueous nitric acid and its mixture with sulfuric as well as with sulfuric and phosphoric acids were obtained. Based on the data obtained, the conditions for the recovery of plutonium from such waste solutions are suggested.

    Notes: Abstract Complex formation of Th(IV), U(IV), Np(IV), and Pu(IV) with fluoride ions in aqueous perchloric acid solution of 1M ionic strength has been studied potentiometrically, using a fluoride ion selective electrode. A highly acidic medium was essential to prevent hydrolysis and disproportionation of the tetravalent actinide ions. A procedure developed earlier in this laboratory for studying the fluoride complexes of hexavalent actinides was successfully extended to this work. The β1 values follow the trend Th(IV)〈U(IV)〉Np(IV)〉Pu(IV), and β2 values the trend Th(IV)〈U(IV)〉Np(IV)〈Pu(IV), while β3 and β4 values followed an increasing order.

    Notes: Abstract Stability constants of the fluoride complexes of Pu(III), Sm(III) and Bi(III) in 1.0M NaClO4/HClO4 medium at 23±1°C have been determined by potentiometry using a fluoride ion-selective electrode. Plutonium was reduced to the trivalent state using quinhydrone with an excess to serve as holding reductant. The log values of concentration stability constants log β1, log β2, and log β3 are 3.58, 6.40 and 12.61 for Pu(III), 3.23, 5.81 and 10.54 for Sm(III) and 3.69, 6.13 and 11.04 for Bi(III), respectively. The log β2 values in all these cases have very large deviation and may be taken only as rough estimates.

    Notes: Abstract Behaviour of Pu(IV) and Pu(VI) in basic media has been investigated by studying their stabilities and quantitative determination by spectrophotometry. Beer's law was found to be obeyed in the range of 1·10−3 to 5·10−3 M Pu(IV) at 485 nm peak with a molar absorption coefficient of 95M−1· cm−1 in sodium carbonate medium. In case of Pu(VI), in the same medium Beer's law was obeyed in the concentration range of 2·10−3 to 1·10−2M at 550 nm with a molar absorption coefficient of 50M−1·cm−1. Distribution ratios of Pu(IV) and Pu(VI) for their sorption on Al2O3 and Amberlyst A-26 (MP) resin from bicarbonate and carbonate media have been determined. High distribution ratios obtained indicate the feasibility of decreasing the plutonium content of basic carbonate streams in reprocessing. 10% breakthrough capacities for Pu(IV) and Pu(VI) with these exchangers during column operations have also been determined.

    Notes: Abstract Extraction of plutonium(IV) from aqueous sulfuric and sulfuric-nitric acid into di-2-ethylhexyl phosphoric acid (HY) in the diluents n-dodecane, toluene or chloroform has been investigated. The composition of the Pu(IV) species extracted from H2SO4 was found to be PuH2Y6, which changed to Pu(NO3)H2Y5 and Pu(NO3)2H2Y4 with increasing concentration of nitrate ion in the aqueous medium. These three species can be represented as PuY2(HY2)2, Pu(NO3)Y(HY2)2 and Pu(NO3)2(HY2)2, respectively, where Y represents the anion of monomeric HY, and HY2 the anion of dimeric H2Y2. Synergism in the extraction of Pu(IV) by the addition of thenoyltrifluoroacetone (HTTA) to HY was also investigated and attributed to extraction of the additional species, Pu(TTA)Y(HY2)2 and Pu(TTA)2(HY2)2. The addition of the neutral extractant tri-n-octylphosphine oxide (TOPO) to HY did not result in synergism in the extraction of Pu(IV) from aqueous sulfuric acid. With aqueous nitric acid under similar conditions, however, synergism was observed. The possible equilibria in these systems were identified and the corresponding equilibrium constants were determined.
