    Notes: The paper examines the results of machining tests carried out on two alloys commonly used in the aircraft industry, specifically, alphabeta type titanium alloy Ti6A14V and nickel-based superalloy of type 718. In view of their excellent mechanical properties and their resistance to a wide range of temperatures, these alloys are widely used in the manufacture of turbo-engine parts. They are extremely difficult to machine, however, for various reasons. The present aim is to consider how their drilling, turning, and milling could be made more productive.

    Notes: Abstract Transfer of resistance toHeterodera avenae, the cereal cyst nematode (CCN), by a “stepping-stone” procedure from the wild grassAegilops ventricosa to hexaploid wheat has been demonstrated. The number of nematodes per plant was lower, and reached a plateau much earlier, in the resistant introgression line H93-8 (1–2 nematodes per plant) than in the recipient H10-15 wheat (14–16 nematodes per plant). Necrosis (hypersensitive reaction) near the nematode, little cell fusion, and few, often degraded syncytia were observed in infested H93-8 roots, while abundant, well-formed syncytia were present in the susceptible H10-15 wheat. Line H93-8 was highly resistant to the two Spanish populations tested, as well as the four French races (Fr1-Fr4), and the British pathotype Hall, but was susceptible to the Swedish pathotypes HgI and HgIII. Resistance was inherited as though determined by a single quasi-dominant factor in the F2 generations resulting from crosses of H93-8 with H10-15 and with Loros, a resistant wheat carrying the geneCre1 (syn.Ccn1). The resistance gene in H93-8 (Cre2 orCcn2) is not allelic with respect to that in Loros. RFLPs and other markers, together with the cytogenetical evidence, indicate that theCre2 gene has been integrated into a wheat chromosome without affecting its meiotic pairing ability. Introduction ofCre2 by backcrossing into a commercial wheat backgroud increases grain yield when under challenge by the nematode and is not detrimental in the absence of infestation.

    Notes: Abstract  A new Hessian fly (Mayetiola destructor) resistance gene from Aegilops ventricosa and its transfer to hexaploid wheat is described. The 4D(4Mv) substitution line H-93-33 derived from the cross [(Triticum turgidum H-1-1×Aegilops ventricosa no. 11)×Triticum aestivum H-10-15] was highly resistant to the Spanish population tested. Resistance seemed to be inherited as a single dominant factor in the F2 generation resulting from a cross of H-93-33 with its susceptible parent (H-10-15). Resistance in Ae. venticosa no. 10 was located on chromosome 4Mv using Mv wheat/Ae. ventricosa addition lines. The resistance gene transferred from Ae. ventricosa no. 11 to H-93-33 (H27) is allelic with respect to that of Ae. ventricosa no. 10 and is non-allelic with respect to the genes H3 and H6 from Monon and Caldwell respectively. The assignment of H27 gene to chromosome 4Mv is further supported by its linkage to a gene encoding isozyme Acph-Mv1, previously located on chromosome 4Mv in the line H-93-33. A new marker from homoeologous chromosome group 4 (Amp-Mv2) present in H-93-33 and the 4Mv addition line is described.

    Notes: Abstract  The cereal cyst nematode (Heterodera avenae) is an important root parasite of common wheat. A high level of resistance was transferred to wheat from Aegilops triuncialis (TR lines) using the cross [(T. turgidum×Ae. triuncialis)×T. aestivum]. Low fertility (3–5 viable kernels per plant) was observed during the process but the surviving hybrid plants were highly vigorous. To obtain stable resistant lines further crosses to T. aestivum were performed. The resistance in TR lines seems to be transferred from the C genome of Ae. triuncialis (genomes CCUU). Ae. triuncialis was highly resistant to the two Spanish populations of H. avenae tested, as well as to four French races and two Swedish populations. The histological analysis showed a hypersensitive reaction in the roots of a resistant TR line inoculated with the Ha71 pathotype of H. avenae, whereas well-formed syncytia were observed in the roots of the susceptible control. Resistance to the H. avenae Ha71 pathotype seemed to be inherited as determined by a single dominant factor in the crosses between resistant TR lines and susceptible cultivars.

    Notes: Abstract A patient with human immunodeficiency virus infection developed anterior mediastinitis during antibiotic treatment for empyema due toRhodococcus equi. This is the first reported case of infection with this organism in this setting. Despite an adequate course of therapy and maintenance treatment with antibiotics to which the isolate ofRhodococcus equi was susceptible in vitro, the patient experienced relapse of the infection into the mediastinum. Clinicians should consider this complication whenRhodococcus equi is present in pleural effusions.

Furthermore, analogous theorems, where the source of the gravitational field is a massless Klein-Gordon field or null dust, are presented.

    Notes: Abstract Evolution of enzyme polymorphism in experimental populations of Drosophila melanogaster III. Linkage disequilibrium between alleles of the Adh and α-Gpdh loci — The evolution of gametic frequencies and linkage disequilibria between alleles of the Adh and α-Gpdh-loci was followed in two experimental populations of Drosophila melanogaster maintained at different temperatures. The results observed were compared with those expected on the basis of theoretical models of gametic selection. Gametic fitness values were estimated from the analysis of the productivity of the different homozygous genotypes. Our experimental results indicate that the selection favours an association between the alleles Adh-F and α-Gpdh-S, but it is impossible to generate and/or maintain a stable linkage disequilibrium between the two alleles.

    Notes: Summary This study is an investigation into the modulatory effects of heparin, a component of the extracellular matrix that binds to dihydropyridine receptors, on contraction and Ca2+ channels in frog skeletal muscle. Using tension and Ca2+ signal measurements in single intact skeletal muscle cells we have found that heparin (100–200 μg ml-1) substantially potentiates twitch and tetanic tension (55% and 28%, respectively). In contrast, heparin reduces the amplitude of K+ contractures. Heparin most likely potentiates twitch tension by prolonging action potentials. The ionic basis of this effect was investigated in voltage-clamp experiments. Membrane currents were monitored in voltage-clamped segments of single fibres using the triple Vaseline gap technique. We found that heparin partially blocks delayed rectifier potassium channels. The depressive effects of heparin on K+ contractures prompted us to investigate the effects of heparin on charge movement and Ca2+ currents (I Ca) under voltage-clamp. Charge movement was measured using a subtraction procedure that employed a -20 mV control pulse from a holding potential of 100 mV. Heparin depresses the total charge by 25%. We propose that the reduction in the amplitude of potassium contractures is related to a partial blockade of charge movement. Extracellular heparin shifts the I Ca-V relation toward more negative voltages and delays the deactivation of tail currents. Double pulse experiments revealed that conditioning depolarizations speed the activation of I Ca during test depolarizations. Heparin does not affect this process. The primary action of heparin is to accelerate the activation of I Ca during pulses not preceded by conditioning depolarizations. Overall, the kinetic effects of heparin on I Ca would increase the Ca2+ influx associated with action potentials. However, mechanical and optical experiments performed in Ca2+-free solutions and in the presence of Ca2+ channel blockers revealed that twitch and tetanic potentiation occur even in the absence of Ca2+-influx.

    Notes: Summary Measurements of isometric tension were performed in single twitch skeletal muscle fibres and the effect of extracellular Na+ removal on contraction was investigated. Na+ withdrawal brought about an increase in the amplitude of K+ contractures and their time course became faster. The potentiation of K+ contractures depended strongly on extracellular Ca2+ and developed slowly following an exponential time course with a time constant of approximately 8 min. Removal of extracellular Na+ greatly increased the amplitude of caffeine contractures and lowered its threshold: caffeine (0.5 mM) had no effect on resting tension in Ringer's but produced contractures in Na+-free solutions. Intramembrane charge movement (charge 1) was monitored in contracting voltage-clamped segments of frog skeletal muscle fibres using the triple-Vaseline-gap technique. Movement of charge 1 did not depend on the presence of extracellular Na+. However, the mechanical threshold decreased by approximately 10 mV at several pulse durations and the charge which produced just detectable contractions decreased by approximately 5 nC μF−1 in the absence of extracellular Na+. Intracellular heparin (40 mg ml−1) increased the mechanical threshold by approximately 20 mV without affecting the movement of charge 1. The effect of Na+-free solutions on the mechanical threshold was additive to that of heparin. It is concluded that the effects of Na+-withdrawal on contraction take place at a location beyond the voltage sensor of excitation-contraction coupling.
