Notes: Abstract Axisymmetrical, laminar and incompressible jets with and without buoyancy in homogeneous surroundings are investigated experimentally and numerically. The experimental set up is described. Characteristics of jets without buoyancy are presented in a parameterless form. Buoyancy — induced jets are completely determined by three parameters, the Reynolds-Number, the Grashof-Number and the Prandtl-Number. The influence of the characteristic numbers to the numerical solution is discussed. On the other hand this result is controlled by analytical solutions. The experimental results are in good agreement with the predicted values. The experiments for stability of laminar jets are correlated with a parameter of momentum.

Description / Table of Contents: Zusammenfassung Für die Oberflächenspannung von leichtem Wasser wurde von der Arbeitsgruppe III der International Association for the Properties of Steam eine Rahmentafel und eine einfache Interpolationsgleichung erarbeitet und als internationaler Standard empfohlen.
Notes: Abstract A Skeleton Table and simple interpolation equation for the surface tension of light water was developed by the Working Group III of the International Association for the Properties of Steam and is recommended as an International Standard. The Skeleton Table is based on all known measurements of the surface tension and individual data were weighted corresponding to the accuracy of the measurements. The form of the interpolation equation is based on a physical concept. It represents an extension of van der Waals-equation, where the exponent conforms to the “Scaling Laws”. In addition for application purposes simple relations for the Laplace-coefficient and for the density difference between the liquid and gaseous phases of light water are given. The same form of interpolation equation for the surface tension can be used for heavy water, for which the coefficients are given. However, this equation is based only on a single set of data.

Notes: Abstract The surface tension of six fluids (SF6, CCl3F, CCl2F2, CClF3, CBrF3, CHClF2) have been measured by means of a modified capillary rise method. The liquid vapor densities, which are needed to calculate the surface tension, have partly been determined by means of refractive indices simultaneously measured in the same apparatus. The temperature dependence of the surface tension is described by an extended van der Waals power law σ=σO(Tc-T)μ(1+...). For simple fluids one term and for polar and associating fluids two terms are necessary and sufficient. The critical exponent μ is found to be 1.284 ± 0.005 and nearly independent of the molecular structure.

Notes: Abstract In order to assess if an oxidant/antioxidant imaalance is involved in human septic shock and its outcome, we measured plasma levels of the lipid peroxides malondialdehyde—as thiobarbituric acid reactive substance—conjugated dienes and fluorescent products, together with the antioxidants alpha-tocopherol, glutathione peroxidase activity and selenium in 12 patients with septic shock and compared them with values of normal controls. At first measurements, malondialdehyde (median 3.9 μmol/l; range 2–38.8) and fluorescent products (median 21.2%; range 9.4–134) were elevated (p〈0.05), alpha-tocopherol (median 15 μmol/l; range 7–25) and selenium (median 0.76 μg/ml; range 0.49–1.09) were depressed (p〈0.05). Conjugated dienes and glutathione peroxidase activity were in the normal range. In non-survivors (n=5) initial levels of malondialdehyde and fluorescent products (median 11 versus 3.1 μmol/l; 74 versus 135 respectively) were higher than in survivors (p〈0.05) and initial selenium levels were lower (median 0.58 versus 0.92 μg/l;p〈0.05). These results are consistent with the concept that an oxidant/antioxidant imbalance—as indicated by elevated plasma lipid peroxides and depressed antioxidants—is involved in human septic shock and a fatal outcome.

Notes: [Auszug] In the experiments described here, the reduction of NAD was studied by coupling it to a system which utilizes NADH, namely the synthesis of glutamate from a-oxoglutarate and ammonia4. Table 1 shows that oxygen at 3 atm. has no effect on the synthesis of glutamate, even after pre-incubation for 60 ...
