    Notes: The airway problems encountered during anaesthesia in all children with mucopolysaccharidoses presenting for a surgical procedure from 1988 to September 1991 are reviewed. Thirty-four patients underwent 89 anaesthetics for 110 procedures. The results reveal a high incidence of airway problems. The overall incidence of difficult intubation was 25% and failed intubation 8%. In those children with Hurler's syndrome, the difficult intubation incidence was 54% and failed intubation incidence 23%. Other potential anaesthetic problems such as cardiac anomalies and obstructive sleep apnoea are also reviewed.

    Notes: Summary Cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) from 120 patients with multiple sclerosis was analysed by polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis, as well as routine laboratory microscopy and assays of total protein and immunoglobulin G (IgG). Negative correlations were found between leucocyte counts and patient age, duration of disease and time from last clinical relapse. There was a positive correlation between the leucocyte count and amount of gammaglobulin. A correlation between gammaglobulin content and degree of disability was found. With increasing duration, the gammaglobulin concentration rose only if there was increasing disability. In terms of correlations with clinical features, differences existed depending on whether IgG was assayed immunologically or by electrophoresis and densitometry. Evidence of increased blood: CSF barrier permeability (transudation of high molecular weight proteins) was found in patients with progressive disease. The presence of oligoclonal bands was the CSF abnormality most frequently encountered.

    Notes: Abstract Psychoactive doses (0.7 mg/kg) of the hallucinogen N,N-dimethyltryptamine (DMT) were administered intramuscularly to 11 normal subjects. A gas chromatographic-mass spectrometric isotope dilution determination of DMT concentrations in whole blood and urine revealed that only a fraction of the injected dose was recovered and the blood DMT concentrations had a very similar time course o the subjectively reported “high”.

    Notes: Abstract A gas chromatographic-mass spectrometric determination of the plasma N,N-dimethyltryptamine concentration from normals and psychiatric patients revealed that within the limit of sensitivity of the assay (0.5–1.8 ng/ml of plasma), there was no difference amongst normals, patients with psychotic depression, acute and chronic schizophrenia.

    Notes: Abstract A gas chromatographic-mass spectrometric determination of blood N,N-dimethyltryptamine in normal controls and schizophrenic patients was carried out with a sensitivity limit of 0.05 ng/ml whole blood. Although the results appear to suggest that the mean DMT level was higher in the total patient group, those patients with acute psychosis, female patients and patients with suspiciousness scores on the BPRS of 4 or over, the differences were not statistically significant.

    Notes: Summary 1. Evidence was obtained of the rapid translocation of radioactive Diazion through bean plants and its emergence in bean root exudates maintained under sterile conditions. 2. The presence of bean rhizosphere microflora did not appear to be a factor in the metabolism of Diazinon by the bean plant. 3. Diazinon applied at the rate of 3 lbs per acre to soil under non-sterile conditions persisted for as long as 180 days after application. No Diazinon was detectable after 10 weeks in soil receiving 0.3 lbs per acre. 4. Diazinon or its degradation products exerted a selective effect common to both soil and rhizosphere microflora which expressed itself in the selective enrichment of a cocoidal rod. Numbers of fungi seemed unaffected by the presence of Diazinon. After 180 days a large number of the genus Streptomyces appeared as a seeming climax population. 5. The predominant microbial isolate utilized Diazinon as a sulfur, phosphorus, carbon and nitrogen source in that order of preference. The biodegradability of Diazinon was conditioned by its solubilization in a suitable carrier, and by the presence of an additional carbon source.

    Notes: Combined gas chromatography-mass spectrometry and isotope labeling techniques have been employed to demonstrate that the carboxamide nitrogen atom in 2-carboxamido-5-isopropoxycarbonylaminobenzimidazole, a metabolite of 2-thiazolyl-5-isopropoxycarbonylaminobenzimidazole (cambendazole), is derived wholly from the parent drug. [15N] Thiazole-labeled cambendazole was administered to a rat and the metabolite isolated from urine. Trideutero-2-carboxamido-5-isopropoxycarbonylaminobenzimidazole was employed as a carrier to isolate the metabolite in sufficient purity for isotope ratio measurements using multiple ion detection. The metabolite was converted to its tetramethyl derivative by on-column reaction with trimethylanilium hydroxide to permit satisfactory gas chromatography.

    Notes: Recently, Atkinson et al. have developed a more sophisticated approach than simple additivity to determine group rate constants at room temperature for reactions of OH radicals with alkanes. In this article, use is made of reliable experimental data at room temperature and at 753 K to determine temperature coefficients for these reactions. Evidence based on experiment is cited in support of the expression k = AT1e-E/RT as a suitable quantitative expression for the variation of k with temperature between 300 and 1000 K for OH attack at any particular specific group in an alkane. Values are given for A and E for a number of groups found in both linear and branched alkanes. With highly branched alkanes, steric effects may limit the use of even the more sophisticated additivity approach used here. Use of the group values permits the calculation of both the overall rate constant for OH + alkane, the agreement with the limited amount of experimental data available being very good, and the proportions of each species of alkyl radical formed in the overall attack. Such information is vital to quantitative modeling of combustion processes currently being carried out extensively. The values given in the article are recommended for use over the temperature range 300-1000 K.
