    Notizen: We have investigated the effect of cooling rate, followed immediately after the isothermal annealing, on the magnetic properties of melt-spun Fe88Zr7B4Cu1 alloy. As the cooling rate is increased, the effective permeability, 2×104, improved by 50% on annealing at around 650 °C. The remanence ratio is also found to concomitantly decrease with the increasing cooling rate. The increase of permeability and decrease of remanence ratio are consistent with the expected suppression of the induced magnetic anisotropy. From an analysis of the transmission electron microscopy micrographs, and the x-ray diffraction spectral intensities, we find that the volume fraction of the amorphous matrix to that of the nanocrystallized magnetic entities to be about 20%, at which the permeability has the maximum value for this system. Scanning electron microscopy and antiferromagnetic investigations show a much smoother surface morphology with a finer grain distribution in the rapidly quenched sample. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

    Notizen: We compared the dose–response relationship and the neuromuscular blocking effects of mivacurium during infusions of esmolol in 40 anaesthetised rabbits. Train-of-four stimuli were applied every 10 s to the common peroneal nerve and the force of contraction of the tibialis anterior muscle was measured. Plasma cholinesterase activity decreased by 13% after esmolol infusion. The ED95 of mivacurium increased significantly from 29 (4.8) μgkg−1 with placebo to 61 (9.8) μgkg−1 during esmolol 100 μgkg−1.min−1, 49 (8.2) μgkg−1 during esmolol 300 μgkg−1.min−1 and 54 (7.3) μgkg−1 during esmolol 500 μgkg−1.min−1, respectively (p 〈 0.001). The duration of neuromuscular block with mivacurium 0.16 mgkg−1 was prolonged by 30% with esmolol due to diminished plasma cholinesterase activity (p 〈 0.05). Heart rate and mean arterial blood pressure decreased by 15% with esmolol (p 〈 0.05). The results of this study show that, in rabbits, esmolol decreased plasma cholinesterase activity, antagonised the neuromuscular blocking potency of mivacurium and prolonged its neuromuscular blocking effect.

Plain radiography (including specimen radiography), ultrasonography and MRI clearly demonstrated vertebral column, ribs, skull, pelvic bones, femurs and a portion of tibiae and humeri. The diagnosis was confirmed by pathological examination.

    Notizen: The effects of phonon confinement on electron–acoustic-phonon scattering is studied in cylindrical semiconductor quantum wires. In the macroscopic elastic continuum model, the confined-phonon dispersion relations are obtained for several crystallographic directions with the two cardinal boundary conditions: free-surface and clamped-surface boundary conditions. The scattering rates due to the deformation potential interaction are obtained for these confined phonons and are compared with those of bulk-like phonons for a number of quantum wire materials. The results show that the inclusion of acoustic phonon confinement effects may be crucial for calculating accurate low-energy electron scattering rates in nanostructures. It is also demonstrated that the scattering rates may be significantly influenced by the direction of phonon propagation, especially for low-energy electrons. Furthermore, it has been found that there is a scaling rule governing the directional dependence of the scattering rates: the directions characterized by small Poisson ratios exhibit large scattering rates. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

    Notizen: Rapid quenched (RQ) palladium-based borocarbides with large fractions of the superconducting phase (Tc(approximately-greater-than)20 K) have been obtained. Superconductivity is found to exist only in the RQ state. Thus, while the as cast YPd2B2C is nonsuperconducting, the RQ material superconducts and has an x-ray diffraction (XRD)-pattern characteristic of a face-centered cubic fcc lattice with a lattice parameter of 4.15 A(ring). A sequential annealing study shows decay of the superconducting phase above 750 °C which correlates well with the reduction in the integral intensities of the XRD fcc peaks. A tentative phase diagram for superconductivity in the Y–Pd–B–C systems is presented. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

    Notizen: We have studied the influence of exchange energy and magnetic anisotropy on the magnetic properties of nanocrystalline materials. Amorphous ribbons of composition Fe88Zr7B4Cu1 have been annealed between about 500 and 700 °C. Temperature dependence of magnetization was carried out and nanocrystallized magnetic entities were investigated using the mean field theory and random anisotropy model obtained ferromagnetic correlation length and magneto-crystalline anisotropy constant. The best soft magnetic properties were observed annealed at 650 °C for the smallest magneto-crystalline anisotropy constant (K1) of about 1.40×104 erg/cm3. We obtained average magnetic anisotropy of 0.81 erg/cm3 which is almost negligible compared with K1 at an annealing temperature of 650 °C. The local magneto-crystalline anisotropy is randomly averaged out by strong exchange interaction so that this mechanism provides the basis for the good soft magnetic properties. © 1997 American Institute of Physics.

    Notizen: Perovskite La1−xCaxMnO3−δ thin films were deposited on MgO(001) substrates using pulsed laser deposition. Effects of deposition conditions, such as laser fluence, substrate temperature, and oxygen pressure, on growth behaviors of the films were investigated over a wide range. Epitaxial La0.7Ca0.3MnO3−δ /MgO thin films were able to be grown in situ under conditions such as 1.5–2.1 J/cm2 laser fluence, 650–750 °C substrate temperature, and 100–300 mTorr oxygen pressure. The oxygen pressure during the deposition is found to be closely related to crystalline orientations of the films. Rutherford backscattering spectroscopy measurements show that the epitaxial La1−xCaxMnO3−δ thin films have compositions similar to those of targets, demonstrating that pulsed laser deposition is a useful technique to get thin films with complicated chemical compositions. The magnetoresistance, −ΔR(6T)/R(0), of the La0.7Ca0.3MnO3−δ /MgO thin film was about −80%, which is smaller than the reported values (i.e., ∼−99.92%) of the La–Ca–Mn–O thin films on LaAlO3 substrates [S. Jin, T. H. Tiefel, M. McCormack, R. A. Fastnacht, R. Ramesh, and L. H. Chen, Science 264, 413 (1994)]. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.
