Notes: The dark traces induced by high-power laser radiation in LiNbO3:Mg and LiNbO3:Zn are found to be reduced by annealing the crystals in an O2 atmosphere. Most of the decrease of the second-harmonic generation efficiency η for 1064–532 nm conversion due to dark traces can be recovered in heat-treated crystals. The transmission loss spectra ΔT(λ) of dark traces show a complex absorption band ranging from 365 nm to near infrared, which can be decomposed into three main peaks at 3.1, 2.5, and 1.6 eV. Maximum transmission loss due to dark traces after 1200 shots with an input power density of 18 MW/cm2 is 17% and 25% for as-grown LiNbO3:Zn and LiNbO3:Mg crystals respectively, and it is reduced to 4.6% and 3.8% respectively for heat-treated crystals. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: An ionic polymer-metal composite (IPMC) consisting of a thin Nafion sheet, platinum plated on both faces, undergoes large bending motion when an electric field is applied across its thickness. Conversely, a voltage is produced across its faces when it is suddenly bent. A micromechanical model is developed which accounts for the coupled ion transport, electric field, and elastic deformation to predict the response of the IPMC, qualitatively and quantitatively. First, the basic three-dimensional coupled field equations are presented, and then the results are applied to predict the response of a thin sheet of an IPMC. Central to the theory is the recognition that the interaction between an imbalanced charge density and the backbone polymer can be presented by an eigenstress field (Nemat-Nasser and Hori, Micromechanics, Overall Properties of Heterogeneous Materials, 2nd Ed., Elsevier, Amsterdam, 1999). The constitutive parameter connecting the eigenstress to the charge density is calculated directly using a simple microstructural model for Nafion. The results are applied to predict the response of samples of IPMC, and good correlation with experimental data is obtained. Experiments show that the voltage induced by a sudden imposition of a curvature, is two orders of magnitude less than that required to produce the same curvature. The theory accurately predicts this result. The theory also shows the relative effects of different counter ions, e.g., sodium versus lithium, on the response of the composite to an applied voltage or a curvature. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Conditions are given for the existence of exact solutions for the effective thermal and electroelastic moduli of polycrystals exhibiting fiber texture. The exact solutions are then developed through the consideration of a class of uniform fields in a polycrystal acted upon by various external thermal and electroelastic loadings. These exact results are verified by direct orientational averaging that shows the coincidence of the Voigt and Reuss bounds on the overall moduli. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: The sign of photoinduced free carriers of LiNbO3:Mg and LiNbO3:Mg:Fe(0.05 wt. %) with various MgO contents has been determined by the holographic technique. The photorefraction of these crystals has also been studied. The enhanced resistance to photorefraction of LiNbO3:Mg((approximately-greater-than)5 mol % MgO) results from the occurrence of photoinduced hole free carriers, whose concentration is nearly equal to the electron concentration.

Notes: Laser-induced dark traces in doped LiNbO3 crystals are studied with the 1064 nm fundamental radiation and the 532 nm second harmonic radiation of the Nd:YAG laser operating in a pulse mode. The results show that the dark traces are induced only by the 532 nm radiation. The linear relationship between the transmission loss and the 532 nm power density indicates that dark traces are not due to two-photon absorption. The recovery rates of the absorption in LiNbO3 with different wavelength probe laser are measured and show that laser-induced dark traces accompany more than one defect appearing in LiNbO3, and disappear quicker at higher temperature. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: We used human neural stem cells (hNSCs) and their differentiated cultures as a model system to evaluate the mechanism(s) involved in rotenone (RO)- and camptothecin (CA)-induced cytotoxicity. Results from ultrastructural damage and terminal deoxynucleotidyl transferase-mediated dUTP nick end labeling (TUNEL) staining indicated that RO-induced cytotoxicity resembled CA-induced apoptosis more than H2O2-induced necrosis. However, unlike CA-induced, caspase 9/3-dependent apoptosis, there was no increased activity in caspase 9, caspase 3 or poly (ADP-ribose) polymerase (PARP) cleavage in RO-induced cytotoxicity, in spite of time-dependent release of cytochrome c and apoptosis-inducing factor (AIF) following mitochondrial membrane depolarization and a significant increase in reactive oxygen species generation. Equal doses of RO and CA used in hNSCs induced caspase 9/3-dependent apoptosis in differentiated cultures. Time-dependent ATP depletion occurred earlier and to a greater extent in RO-treated hNSCs than in CA-treated hNSCs, or differentiated cultures treated with RO or CA. In conclusion, these results represent a unique ultrastructural and molecular characterization of RO- and CA-induced cytotoxicity in hNSCs and their differentiated cultures. Intracellular ATP levels may play an important role in determining whether neural progenitors or their differentiated cells follow a caspase 9/3-dependent or -independent pathway in response to acute insults from neuronal toxicants.

Notes: Human neural precursor cells grown in culture provide a source of tissue for drug screening, developmental studies and cell therapy. However, mechanisms underlying their growth and differentiation are poorly understood. We show that epidermal growth factor (EGF) responsive precursors derived from the developing human cortex undergo senescence after 30–40 population doublings. Leukemia inhibitory factor (LIF) increased overall expansion rates, prevented senescence and allowed the growth of a long-term self renewing neural stem cell (ltNSCctx) for up to 110 population doublings. We established basal gene expression in ltNSCctx using Affymetrix oligonucleotide microarrays that delineated specific members of important growth factor and signaling families consistently expressed across three separate lines. Following LIF withdrawal, 200 genes showed significant decreases. Protein analysis confirmed LIF-regulated expression of glial fibrillary acidic protein, CD44, and major histocompatibility complex I. This study provides the first molecular profile of human ltNSCctx cultures capable of long-term self renewal, and reveals specific sets of genes that are directly or indirectly regulated by LIF.

Notes: Ovariectomized ewes were injected with charcoal-extracted bovine follicular fluid (n = 5) or with hypophysectomized ewe serum (n = 5) after which hypophyseal portal blood samples were taken to monitor the release of gonadotrophin-releasing hormone (GnRH). Peripheral blood samples were also taken to monitor plasma luteinizing hormone and follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) concentrations. Bovine follicular fluid treatment caused a 50% decrease in plasma FSH concentrations whereas hypophysectomized ewe serum did not significantly alter plasma FSH levels. The frequency and amplitude of luteinizing hormone and GnRH pulses was similar in both experimental groups. It is concluded that inhibin activity in bovine follicular fluid selectively suppresses the release of FSH by direct action on the pituitary gland, with no effect on GnRH secretion.
