    Notes: A method for measuring magnetization under high pressure and pulsed high magnetic field was developed for a Drickamer-type cell using diamond anvils and an insulator gasket. As the first test, the magnetization of invar alloy Fe0.65Ni0.35 was measured at room temperature up to 8 GPa in a pulsed field of 10 T with a width of 4 ms. The magnetization decreased with increasing pressure, indicating a transition to a paramagnetic state at 5–6 GPa, in accordance with the results of previous experiments using conventional methods such as ac susceptibility measurement. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: The mucosal relief of the omasum in cattle, sheep and goats was examined by the naked eye, stereoscopic microscope and scanning electron microscope. The mucosal relief of the omasum showed wide variations both between and within these species. Omasal papillae on the laminae varied highly in shape, i. e. conical, rounded, claw-like, wart-like, finger-like etc. They decreased gradually in size from the oral to the aboral region of the omasal lamina. Ridge-like structures and linear arrangements of the papillae were also seen on the omasal laminae of cattle and sheep. Many grooves and folds were found on the lateral surface of the omasal papillae in adult cattle and on the inter-papillar surface of the laminae of all three species. The mucosal relief of the omasum in cattle seemed to be more well-developed than those of sheep and goats. Dietary effects on the omasal mucosa were also discussed.

    Notes: The cells in the condensed fibrous layer in the lamina propria of the ruminal mucosa of the calves and cows were studied at the light microscopic level. Abundant actin-immunoreactive cells were detected both in the calves and cows, while desmin-immunoreactive cells were moderate in frequency in the cows and low or absent in the calves. Vimentin-immunoreactive cells were abundant in the cows but moderate to low in frequency in the calves. These cells were distributed to form a condensed layer being more abundant in the ruminal papillae than the interpapillar mucosae in the cows and equal in the papillae and interpapillar mucosae in the calves. At the ultrastructural level, smooth muscle cells and fibroblasts were abundant in the deep core of the ruminal papilla of the cows.The present results suggest that the condensed fibrous layer revealed in the ruminal mucosae contains smooth muscle cell population which could be regarded as the specialized lamina muscularis mucosae.

    Notes: The postnatal development of the stomach in the Japanese field vole, Microtus montebelli, were studied with the light and scanning electron microscopes.Three kinds of cells constituting the fundic glands, that is, mucous neck cells, parietal cells and chief cells were distinguished clearly by light microscopy to have been differentiated around 14 days old. At 4 days old, the structure of pyloric glands was similar to that of adult stage. The investigation on the development of esophageal sac, fundic stomach and pyloric stomach was made by measuring each area of the vertical section. The fundic stomach grew more rapidly than the esophageal sac and pyloric stomach. The ratio of esophageal sac to fundic stomach and pyloric stomach in the area was about 1.5: 2: 1 at 20 days old.In the fundic glands, 5-hydroxytriptamine (5-HT)- and somatostatin-immunoreactive cells appeared first at 6 days old and at birth, respectively and in the pyloric glands, gastrin-, 5-HT- and somatostatin-immunoreactive cells appeared at 19th day fetus. Gastrin-immunoreactive cells showed a rapid increase in the pyloric glands after birth. The distribution and frequency of endocrine cells were similar to that of adult at about 20 days old.The fimbria showed bank-like appearance at the beginning and thereafter they showed the process-like structure. The fimbria in both the appearance and the length at 60 days old was similar to that of adult stage.As a whole, the stomach of the field vole seemed to became mature at 20 days old in the aspects of gastric endocrine cells and morphology of gastric wall, although the fimbria formation was not accomplished at the same period.

    Notes: The differential localization of the inhibin β subunits βA and βB in the testis of adult bull was studied using specific monoclonal and polyclonal primary antibodies. Inhibin βA- and βB-subunits were localized only in the Sertoli cells. The inhibin βA-subunit was observed in the cytoplasm while the βB-subunit was localized in the nucleus. No specific findings depending on spermatogenic stages were observed among the seminiferous tubules. Moreover, the inhibin α-subunit was not detected in the testis of the bulls. In addition, no inhibin subunits were detected in the Leydig cells and spermatogenic cells. These findings indicate the presence of βA- and βB-subunits in the bull, which may suggest a possibility that activin is produced and/or stored in the Sertoli cells and regulates spermatogenesis in an autocrine/paracrine manner. Moreover, the inhibin βB-subunit may be produced in the nucleus but the functional meaning of this is not yet clear.

    Notes: In the giraffe (Giraffa camelopardalis), the masseter muscle was divided into several layers. The superficial and more medial (second) tendinous sheets of the masseter muscle fused with each other at the dorso-caudal part and a fleshy portion was located between these tendinous sheets. In the rostral part, the most superficial tendinous sheet turned around as a compact tendon and attached to the facial crest (Crista facialis). The turned tendinous sheet, however, never fused with the second tendinous sheet and this layer of the masseter muscle, that originated from the facial crest with the turned sheet, was inserted into the mandible with its fleshy portion. In the cattle, goat, sheep and Sika deer, the rostral layer of the masseter muscle arises from the facial crest with its fleshy portion and is inserted into the tubercle on the mandible through the strong tendinous sheet. In this study, the takin also showed the same structure of the masseter muscle. In the giraffe, however, the rostral layer inserted into the mandible through the strong tendinous sheet could not be distinguished, thus, there was no conspicuous tubercle on the mandible. Moreover in the masseteric region of the skull, the giraffe was similar to the Sika deer in several ways. However, it is suggested that the giraffe exerts smaller forces on the cheek teeth than does the Sika deer because of its longer Margo interalveolaris.

    Notes: The appearance and development of prochymosin- and pepsinogen-producing cells were investigated in the ovine abomasum from fetus to adult using immunohistochemistry. Prochymosin immunoreactivity appeared first in the proper gastric glands of the 100-day-old fetus. The intensity and distribution of prochymosin-immunoreactive cells increased gradually with the progress of gestation, and their most intense immunoreactivities and widest distribution were observed in 3-day-old lambs. They were subsequently reduced throughout postnatal growth. A few prochymosin-immunoreactive cells were scattered in the glands of adult sheep. Pepsinogen immunoreactivity appeared at first in a small number of cells in the base of some proper gastric glands of 120-day-old fetuses. After 130 days, pepsinogen-immunoreactive cells increased their staining intensities and distribution. They reached a peak in area at 21 days, which is comparable to adult sheep. In the pyloric glands, prochymosin- and pepsinogen-immunoreactive cells appeared from 100 and 130 days, respectively. Numbers were reduced in comparison to gastric glands and their occurrence was capricious. The results demonstrated that the ontogeny of prochymosin- and pepsinogen-immunoreactive cells in the abomasum of sheep is more similar to that in cattle than to that in the goat. The present data will contribute to the overall understanding of the development of ruminant gastric proteases.

    Notes: The distribution and relative frequency of six kinds of endocrine cells in the stomach of the Malayan pangolin, Manis javanica were studied immunohistochemically using the avidin–biotin–peroxidase complex method. The stomach of the pangolin has three regions of mucous gland, one oxyntic gland and one pyloric gland. Cells immunoreactive for chromogranin, serotonin, somatostatin, BPP and glucagon were detected in all of the gastric glands, while gastrin-immunoreactive cells were found in the entire gastric gland except for the oxyntic gland. The distribution pattern of endocrine cells in the mucous gland and pyloric gland was mainly from the middle to apical portions of the glands. The endocrine cells were rare or not detected in the basal portion of all of the mucous glands and pyloric gland, but they were also found in the basal portion of the oxyntic gland. The distribution pattern of the endocrine cells in the mucous and pyloric glands suggested that this position facilitates a quick response to the luminal ingesta. The wide distribution of gastrin-immunoreactive cells in all of the mucous glands and pyloric gland was the most remarkable finding. This distribution suggests a major function of gastrin-immunoreactive cells for the digestive process in the Malayan pangolin stomach.

    Notes: The present study has demonstrated the immunohistochemical localization of gastrin-releasing peptide (GRP), neuronal nitric oxide synthase (nNOS) and neurone-specific enolase (NSE) in the uterus of the North American opossum. Although the presence of GRP, nNOS and NSE has been reported recently in the uterus of eutherian species this is the first description of these peptides in a metatherian species. Metatherian mammals are of interest because in these species it is the prolonged lactation phase of development that is the period of primary reproductive investment rather than intrauterine development as is true of eutherian mammals. The opossum, like other marsupial species, has a very abbreviated gestation period which in Didelphis lasts only 12.5 days. GRP was localized in the cytoplasm of cells forming the surface lining epithelium and the glandular epithelium of the opossum endometrium late in pregnancy, at 11.5 days of gestation. Likewise, immunoreactivities of nNOS and NSE were found primarily within the epithelial cells of the endometrium at 11.5 days of gestation. As these peptides and enzymes appear primarily at the time of establishment of the yolk sac placenta (between day 10 and day 12.5 gestation), the present results strongly suggest that these factors may play a fundamental role in the placentation of the opossum.
